All my items are arriving tomorrow and I'm sure everyone is familiar with the desperation to build as soon as possible. Is the backplate highly recommended, or more of a precaution against bending the motherboard? If it's really really worth it, then I can order it and wait an extra day. If not then I can save some money and build tomorrow.

I'd say yes.

[wait for someone with the block to confirm as I don't have it]

IMO the backplate is worth it no matter what block you are using

okay, thanks. Is there any reason I couldn't use a 'standard' 1366 backplate like the one below, or should i spend a little more for the official one?

I would go for the official one because the holes are threaded.
