View Full Version : Quad rad not cooling? Should I "downgrade" to a tri-rad?

Hello Everyone,

I have been wondering why my PC does not cool as cold as expected. I have replaced my Apogee GTZ and reservoir (due to small crack) and am wondering why on stock clock I get average 31 degrees C, when I am expecting 20-25; I have also reapplied less thermal paste, more thermal paste, etc. I am led to believe my rad is just "too large" and I should downgrade to a smaller rad. Could this be possible? If so, what rad would you recommend?

Edit - what I mean by quad rad / tri rad:

Tri Rad - GTX 360
Quad Rad - GTX 480

Thanks,

Dave

Perhaps I'm a bit off base, but as long as you have enough cool air blowing across your radiator, it should be fine. Being as un-edumicated as I am, did you change rad makers and such, possibly from one that only requires a low airflow fan, to one that requires a high airflow one? ( tighter fins / more pressure needed/ etc ), and keep your original fans?

No, I'm using Scythe Ultra Kaze, and I usually have them over 2200RPM's. (Typically 2700RPM). The rad doesnt get hot, I just think its too big for my setup and since its so large, limits the speed of the waterflow.

Why are you expecting 20°-25°? Did it ever occur that your sensor may be off?

Not at all. How would I know?

Dude - you have an i7. They run hot. 31 degrees load temp is bloody brilliant, even for stock clocks - you'd have to be running chilled liquid to get any lower. On a loop with just an Apogee GTZ and a radiator, flow rates are not going to be an issue providing your pump is anywhere near half decent, so don't worry that the size of your rad is increasing your temps.

Go to this topic and grab the program of your choice.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=221897

Install, load test your rig for at least an hour and report back with temps.

also unless youve lapped your cpu your temps may not be Ideal....

whats your load temperatures?

load temp - overclocked to 4.1 - is 65-71, HT OFF.

Idle temps are in the range of 35-40 on the overclocked setting.

Put it at 4.0 Ghz, turn the HT on and the Turbo on at 190 Bclk. Run Intel Burn Test for four hours. Tell us the temps after four hours.

Idle temps are meaningless.

Coolermaster V8 C-state on, etc idle temps upper 20's to lower 30's
Watercooling same settings idle temps mid 30's

Here is where the real advantage of watercooling comes in ;)
4Ghz prime HT on Coolermaster V8 100C and throttles in 1-2 minutes
4Ghz prime HT on watercooling upper 60's to lower 70's after 10 hours.

different softwares produce different temps.

what software are you using?

Can we say it one more time?

DEBUGING WITHOUT COOLANT TEST = POINTLESS

Ambients and watercoolant temps is the driving factor in h2o, without knowing what those are, no one but god and greed can tell you what to do.

no this is greed calling out to ya.

Cuz God (physics) says the bigger the rad the better.

Thats odd because physics also says with enough restriction to the water flow the bigger one might not always perform the best ;)
