First things first, I have a 1000 dollar budget maxxxx. I need a good receiver, and a 5.1 surround sound system. I know nearly nothing about this so I'll really need help. I found a decent looking receiver, its a yamaha htr-6130 with hdmi input spdif etc. For speakers I'd like a good sub, good speakers, but not massive speakers and no floor standing ones, they take up way too much space. Also, I'd rather all my speakers be wired, I really don't want to deal with satellite junk.

Thanks in advance, and remember, 1000 bucks tops.

Edit: I think I'm going to get this receiver, it looks really nice.

Klipsch rb-51s if you like your music loud and clear or RB-61s if you can spend some extra $$$

http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/rb-51.aspx
http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/rb-61.aspx

or

Boston Acoustics CS-26 would be another good choice for bookshelf speakers for less $$$

http://www.bostonacoustics.com/-CS-26-Bookshelf-Speaker-P259.aspx

My advise would be to just get a pair now and then add on later rather than getting more cheap speakers now for best results over the long run.

There is a nice Harmon Kardon receiver For around $400 that would be a good choice.

http://www.amazon.com/Harman-Kardon-7-1-Channel-Receiver-Repeater/dp/B0016BGRX6/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1237218434&sr=1-18

Or

Sony STR-DE998 would be another good pick.

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STR-DE998-Channel-Surround-Receiver/dp/B0007Y6AO4/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1237218731&sr=1-24

Your best bet though is to spend some time shopping around and listening to the systems you are thinking of getting so you really get what you want and remember don't judge your purchase by wattage, that would be the the biggest mistake of all.

I found a good receiver. Now for speakers, I know that klipsch has great products, but do they have any floor standing models? I have nowhere to put bookshelf speakers since my tv takes up all the room on the table.

Here's the receiver btw.

yes, klipsch has amazing floor standing speakers

http://www.klipsch.com/products/lists/floorstanding.aspx

none of which are affordable, unless you get full systems

http://www.klipsch.com/products/lists/floorstanding-systems.aspx

i would suggest saving a bit and getting an f-1 system.

Its not really about saving up, I can pop out another 500 bucks if needed, but I'd rather not get past 1000 bucks. The F1 and the amp brings me to 2000 bucks, twice the budget.

I've always been partial to Yamaha. I have a pair of towers with dual 8" woofers and 1" titanium dome tweeters (forget exact model but made about 99-00 or so) and they are good enough to make the neighbors 2km away complain if we're having an outdoor party (not in the city..) and have managed to shake items off the shelves in the kitchen before.

Quality wise I like them. Best ever? Of course not. Quantity wise they're awesome.

That was all before we put down hardwood too. Room type makes a huge difference, but really if you get anything with dual 8" woofers you'll be doing good. Dual/tripple 6.5's are ok for the average listener but lack the low end response that larger displacement provides.

If you are looking for a set of good floor standing models i recommend starting with a good used set of heritage series, they can be found for reasonable prices if you look around.

Klipsch has a forum that you may find something there ,ebay or craigslist is another place to look along with a local trader magazine.

My Chorus IIs are almost 20 years old and still sound like new, in fact i still have my fathers old Altec Valencia 846As that are 40 years old and will put all but very high end modern loudspeakers to shame. What im trying to say is a good set of speakers can last a lifetime so buying used is nothing to be ashamed of.

This'll be going in a pretty large room, and my friend's 8" woofer (klipsch) is pretty muddy in a smaller room. I'm taking a look at their 12" stuff atm, I'm sure that'll have enough kick. :D

Carpeted room? Definately go with a 12". I'd build a "sono-sub" ;)

Not carpeted, but tile. It has a lot of paintings on the wall etc and a lot of furniture that absorb sound and distort it though.

As for your subwoofer, retail brands are mostly junk IMO. What's your budget on that? For around $450, you can get some really nice subwoofers that will deliver tons of bass with little distortion.

Yeah, I know, but I don't have the budget for a 500 dollar sub. The set with the receiver has to be 1000 bucks, maybe 1100 tops.

Yamaha NS-125FPN 2-Way Bass Reflex Tower Speaker (One Speaker, Piano Black) has good looking features and excellent sound quality. Perfect for use either as stereo speakers or as part of a home cinema surround sound system.

There are tons of good budget subs out there. Have a look at the BIC F12, it's one of the best budget subs. Blows away anything Klipsch offers for the same money.

Hmm ... i would get a NAD reciever but i think its maybe a bit too expensive for your budget ... if your not getting a used one otherwise get an Onkyo 606 real cheap and you get overall a good sound. For the speakers i would seriously consider buying used Bowers and Wilkins (B&W) speakers like the older ones (601 S3, 602 etc) they are "small" speakers but this is the most BANG FOR THE BUK EVER! i got the 601 S3 to my computer and its quite amazing how well they play with my subbwoofer. I think you can get a really good system if you get the onkyo 606 and some B&W speakers, you can use the 60X speakers as front and sorround så get two pairs of them and subb woofer.

Hmm ... i dont know if you can get this subb "XTZ 99 W12.16" it got a 12" bass, i got it myself and it really can shake the house :). Yesterday i was watching lord of the rings just beacause the sound in those movies even tho the movie sucks ... my B&W speakers and the subb made me really chilly ... :)

I mean those speakers

or this

http://cgi.ebay.com/B-W-DM-602-Speakers-dm-602_W0QQitemZ190303743541QQcmdZViewItemQQptZSpeake rs_Subwoofers?hash=item190303743541&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A13 18|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

And the reciever;

http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?class=Receiver&m=TX-SR606&p=i

OR you can get a NAD reciever beacause it got a much "explosive" sound, the only problem is that only the higher-end NAD recievers got HDMI. But i dont think HDMI is any good ... i'd rather use the component cables from each component to my reciever ... often HDMI can only send audio threw the reciever.

If you are not against buying used, vintage audio gear can sound AWESOME at extremely good prices. Check craigslist for speakers, and browse around sites like audiokarma for advice.

I'm using a Pioneer VSX-418 5.1 Reciever - 500watt RMS (100watt RMS per channel), includes an AM/FM tuner. It's a good bit of kit - well made, no problems with it so far.

As far as speakers go - i'm using the aforementioned reciever with Bowers & Wilkins 685's - INSANELY good quality. Hardwood cabinets. Neodymium Magnets. Kevlar Cones. The quality is off the chart for bookshelf speakers.
