just curious for $1150 if this is still one of the best gaming laptops ...

one of the reviews on it ..

Team Fortress 2 (HIGHEST SETTIGNS): Average FPS: 130
Left 4 Dead (HIGHEST SETTINGS): Average FPS: 92
CSS: (HIGHEST SETTINGS): Average FPS: 200
Crysis: Highest: Avg 53 Medium: Avg 71

was also thinking ... should i reinstall XP on it or just modify vista and take away the extra resource hog stuff ....

ideas and thoughts?

Install Vista and SP1. There's no extra resource hog stuff if you have 4 GB RAM.

I would wait for the Asus K-series to come out. They're supposed to come with the RV740 HD4860 which should be faster than that 9800M GTS.

While it cost me a bit more ($1700), I bought a Sager NP8660 from powernotebooks (http://www.powernotebooks.com/index.php3). This machine is a beast. I got mine configured with some great options:
15.4" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) Glossy LCD
nVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS w/512MB GDDR3
C2D P8400 2.26GHz 1066MHz FSB
2GB DDR3/1066

Don was very helpful. They offer some great warranty options, too. And you can pay for what you want.

i cant find anything on when they will actually be released ... is it going to be anytime soon? cause i need a laptop for working around the house and figured i might as well get a decent gaming one just in case i get bored haha

and wont the 4860 melt the entire laptop? haha cause i had a 4870 in my gaming rig and dont remember that thing being all too cool

I believe the laptop in the original post has just a P8400, their power-efficient processors. go for a T9300 at least which has 6mb cache (instead of 3mb with the P8400), and it runs at 2.5ghz.
i'd say browse the dell outlet (as they usually have even discounts on that by applying coupon codes) for a similar computer with a better processor.
www.dell.com/outlet and search slickdeals.net (or google) for a coupon code

hope you get a nice comp :)

I have the older model. The P7811FX, basically the same thing with a smaller hard drive. I like mine. Plays pretty much all the games I tossed at it. I'd say you can't go wrong for the price.

hows the heat on it? do you use one of those cooling pad things?

It can get quite warm. I do use a laptop cooler. NZXT Cooler.

I love my original Gateway P-6831FX. No heat issues at all, and runs cool for a gaming laptop when propped up with something.

The newer generations keep getting better and better. I can't recall if this is the one that had heat issues, but with a decent cooler you should be set!
