we will start a fun overclocking competition in 1-2 weeks. we will order a load of cheap videocards in a few days (xabre400) and buy them all in one shop and then distribute them amongst us so everybody has the same card with the same pcb layout, the same memory and the same gpu stepping.


the price is around 50$ worldwide and 40€ in europe (including shipping and paypal costs) and the competition will very likely start in 2 weeks, we will meassure the performence with 3dmark2001 and have our own XS orb! :D

Damn, I have sold my freakin Club 3D Xabre400 to a friend of me a couple of months ago.

This was my best bench with it: ORB (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=5412771)

The best xabre400 score that thime. The 2 who where getting better scores where xabre 600's.

The card was unmodded. It just mounted a waterblock on it.

My lower score before this one 8829 marks was with these clocks:

SiS Xabre400 @ 332/370 and Nature @ 332/375

I think we should either go with an Nvidia or ATI cards only so as to not have mounting probs for our coolers...... I prefer ATI personally so I dont have to get a different block for the card..... Im sending you a PM right now saaya......

You cant order the cards untill we have decided exactly what to get.
The plan ATM is that saaya buys the cards in bulk in germany and ships them out to you guys, that way you all get the same card (or as close as your ever going to get)
Plus this german place is dead cheap, even with the postage from germany.

We have looked at ALLOT of places and allot of different card options and there is no budget card that is avalable worldwide :(

Even the MSI 8X440 card I found has 3 revisions, so thats no better...

The only surefire way to all get the same card is to get them all at the same place.

Please count me in. And I really like the idea of the Xabre 400, I beleive for the money it out performs the others. It reminds me of the early Radeon 8500 (VSA-100 core). It has some interesting architecture, pipeline structure, and 3D enhancements. It was SIS's best effort at entering graphics market, and they really worked hard on it. Hey I'll even contact SIS if you get a number. In fact I may shoot an email for Pete's sake.

What about Matrox as well? Sorry don't mean to be so picky, or opinionated, but I'm one who must REALLY be careful as $50 is my DSL bill, food and/or soap. Maybe my bi-mothly colonge allotment (got to have some pleasures from the past hehe).

I know there was going to be different sections for AMD/Intel and extreme, but this would give us poor little aircoolers a chance to compete.

Here's a serious thought. I know most folks here are Xtreme...but why not...for the sake of order....divide the competition into classes, IE.

Pure aircooled class

Water cooled class

TEC / Water class

Prommie / Vapochill class


This way, we can see someones skill based not only on hardware purchases...but also working within the confines of ones class.


I run my 2.6 @ 3.6 on air 24/7...I've had to voltmod and get some serious airflow to do so...

I think that makes me an Xtreme aircooled type of guy!

So whatcha think?!?!?

I'm just gonna copy&paste what I just PMed to saaya:

I'd say it's either a free for all (maybe except amd/intel category), or a rather low cpu speed wich 90% of us can bench at and let it mainly be a GFX competition.

Eg. AMD @ 2ghz and Intel @ 3Ghz. Everyone with a Tbred can reach 2ghz, and every P4C can handle 3Ghz easely.

imho this is a good idea. What's the point in going through so much difficulties getting everyone exactly the same Xabre, if half of the competitors are struggling to reach 2.5ghz with their tbred?

We shouldn't make 10 different categories either, competing against 15 ppl is way more fun than 3 competitors.

My opinion:
cat 1: free for all, any cpu, any cooling
cat 2: amd tbred at 2100mhz, amd barton at 2000mhz
cat 3: intel p4c at 3ghz

Those who compete in cat 2 or 3 only have the risk of killing their cheap gfx card, not whole system.

i think maybe it isn't a good idea to make the categories so you can't use supercooling on yoyr xabre without competing in the xtreme category. then the idea of making it equal disappears !!

i like the idea of everyone gets a card and then do with it what you want is more like it. but still keep the categories to help the poor people from the Xtreme guys !!

Its not going to make much if any differance running on a 1g or a 3g machine..video card will be the bottleneck,thats the whole reason for using the small card.
there is no way to inforce the cpu clock limits,so by using the small card everyone is on a equal playing field...

Xabre400 is not the great idea - ORB can't recognize Xabre 400 among 600 & 200, it's just "SiS Xabre series"... And MX will be much more interesting card to bench... Remember that category in ORB is owned by vietnamese for now and there are some nice results there... It would be a challenge just to beat them;)

because the ones of us with 2 cards wouldnt be scared to find the limit to the volts used and have a backup to take over.

the risk of burning up the card is half of the fun in my opinion...:D

so you burn it up and you are out.....that in its self will slow us down a notch:D

IF i buy the cards and send them to everybody it will look like this:

europe: 29.90+7.50= 37.40€
worlwide: 29.90+13.50= 43.40€ (~48$)

i will have to repack the cards to fit in the smaller package and probably take out the drivers cd and manual to reduce the weight.

the shipping to europe will take 1-3days (maybe 4 to ukraine, no idear...)
the shipping worldwide will take more or less one week.

since a lot of you people (if not all :D) will probably take the heatsink of the card off and replace it i had an idear.

if i remove the heatsink and send you the card alone ,it will weight less than 250 gr (i already tested with my 4200 without heatsink) and shipping will be 4€ less! ill ask you what shipping you want in the final pm i will send you.

Saaya, if you get the money from people via paypall are you able to buy all the card (remember that you cant get the money out of paypall for at least a week)

A better option may be that people pay me, and I send you the money over a bank transfer (if I can, I dont know if my bank will let me) that way I can keep the money in paypall (I have a £2000 interest free overdraft :P ) and take the money from my bank account.

As for the classes, Id rather keep it to three, I can lower the CPU clocks to 2gig and 2.5gig (SocketA/P4) for the prize catagorys.

I also have a trophy to send out for the XTREME anything goes catagory.

If people want to comete in air only and such then thats ok cool by me, I might even have another trophy or two I can use.

I just don't see why anyone would cheat, I think he have a better class of peep's here and that just shouldn't happen.

Why not have one category for "Open Class" i.e. anything goes, P4 AMD64, LN2, dry ice, phase-change... An AMD and Intel watercooled class "Modified Class", and an AMD and Intel aircooled class "Stock Class". Competitors can only enter one class. This way it gives a chance for some of the "average Joe's" a chance to win a class. Not all of us have access to the higher-end equip, and some may just want to try and beat out others with air cooling, just to show they can. Dunno just a though.

Uhm, where did you read that? The review states the ECS Xabre 400 is overclockable.


Unfortunately, the memory on that board failed to overclock by over 20 MHz and the maximum possible result froze at 270 MHz where it ran without image artifacts and didn't hang. That must be its limit. On the contrary, the core was easier to achieve clock speed records and ran trouble-free at even 300 MHz. Sothe maximum stable clock frequency which we managed to make the card work at was 300/270(540) MHz.

ok ive checked like 25 reviews od ecs and other xabre400 cards and it seems the early pre prduction cards oced on core and mem. then people got the first mass production cards but there were some driver issues so people could not oc the cards at all or only the memory.

then the reviews get really confusing. some couldnt oc at all, some could only oc the gpu, some could only oc the memory and some, most of the reviewers, could oc the gpu unlimited, but the memory was always stuck at 270-285. they hit a wall at a certain speed, sometimes 270 sometimes at 285. i guess this is a software lock to prevent the cards from beeing oced too much, so people would buy a xabre 600 rather than ocing the much cheaper 400 cards.

i think its either in the drivers or the bios of the cards, probably in the bios since every brand of the xabre 400cards hit the ocing wall at a dferent speed. always round numbers and the cars would artifact heavily all the suden when they ran great at 5mhz less for hours. i know this from my radeon 9100.

so if the cards are really locked in bios there are 3 things we can do.

1 find the bios of an early xabre 400 card wich is not locked
2 find any xabre 400 card/bios that is not locked to ocing
3 find a way to hack the bios to oc the cards

im very sure that its a software lock and not hardware since a hardware lock would be a lot more complicated and it would cost a lot more money to implement and develop than limiting the closk in the bios.

remember when the radeon 9700 non pro 9500pro and 9500non pro were released? they were all locked to ocing in bios until people found ways to disbale the lock in the drivers and with hacked bios files.

can anybody try to find some info on this and maybe the guy who hacked those bios files?

i will call sis and ecs tomorrow and ask them for an ocing bios, lol :D i mean come on, the cards are out of production for months, whats the deal?

I like Bastards Idea though on limiting clock speed so that it just comes down to video card oc'ing skillz and system optimizations etc...

Also, I think in the Regular amd/intel catagories we should limit the gpu to aircooling as 99% of us don't have spare gpu blocks or phase change setups. Most of us do have spare heatsinks we could mod to slap on there for better cooling though. I think top finishers should also supply a picture of their rigs while benching just to validate. Not that these are huge prizes or anything(although very nice ty Holst) but at least there wouldn't be as much mystery if someone was a little too "optimized" so to speak.

PS I really don't know how the sabre 400's perform. Weren't they close to GF3 performance?

and im back with good news and bad.

I CAN transfer money from my bank to saaya's (good news)
BUT they will charge me £18.50 for the privilage...

So thats not ideal as we are paying just to move the money around.

Better will be if everybody pays into saaya's paypall... but its not active yet. And if he cant get the money out by the 17th we are all screwed... Personally Im not sure if he can get the money out of paypall into his account in time.

The other option is for another european member to accept all the paypall and for them to transfer the money in euros to saaya (vastly reducing the transfer cost)
However we need somebody trustworthy who can withdraw the money from there account even with some of the paypall still to pay in... i.e. somebody with a decent ballance in there account, or like me a big cheap overdraft.

hmmm interesting the xabre cards have no fully functional vertex shader hardware ,instead they emulate the vertex shader software wise. so they support dx8.1 with vertex shaders 1.3 by emulating the vertex shaders.

i just read that sis might release a new driver wich will make the card emulate vertex shader 2.0. it wont make the card a dx9 card, but it will have some extra effects other dx8 cards can not display. this will make it more powerfull featurewise than a geforce 4 ti card! performence wise it wont really get close to a geforce4 ti though.

might be interesting for those of you who will actually keep the card and use it in a backup pc.

Just send them off a few days later to the EU folks if that's ok. Then we'll get then all within days instead of a week and a half difference

shipping to the us should only take 1 week maximum, so dont worry, the diference will be only days even if i sedn them out the same day.

Use PSP6 or something and a screenshot of each of the bios's overlayed via a multiplied addition (iirc) to see differences between them...

i didnt know kingston uses infinion chips? infinion tsop chips is one of the worst memory ive ever seen
