View Full Version : What kind of clocks on an i7-920 under water?

So, I was toying with the idea of getting an i7-920, but then I looked at the benchmarks and was kind of dissapointed with the tiny increase over the standard quad in game benchmarks.

Then I thought, well how well do these things clock..

What can one expect to get out of a 920 under water (stable)?
4500mhz? If I do get one, it will just be on a standard d5-ek supreme-mcr320 (push-pull)

What is the limiting factor on the 920, temps or motherboard fsb?

Or should I just wait.....

I think you'll find the entire Nehalem range so far clocks stable from 3.80ghz - 4.20ghz (920, 940, 965) under water.

mine for example is 24/7 clocked at 4.02ghz at 35c idle and 48 load. but even a single mhz more and the system will not post. i'd say the limiting factor is fsb or qpi, because even under ln2 all the chips still clock the same (965 a little more)

for gaming id invest more in GPU's. there isn't a huge difference from an overclocked quad core extreme on a 790i ultra board (what i had last) but when running at nothing less than 2560x1600 all the time I need all the ammo i can get!

I read somewhere a new nvidia bios/patch that came out that speeds up performance on the x58.. hmm

Any idea when the new steppings/cpus will be out?

Agree with ell. I'm just learning about the wonders of the i7, but the 920 is very easy to get to 4.0GHz. I generally run at 3.6 and it will run day/night at that clock. My temps are a little higher than ell's - I show about mid-30s at idle and low-mid 50s under load.

There's a thread (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=213105) in the Intel section that will give you an idea of the variations for the 920 - I don't see anyone over 4.2 on the list so far (not saying people haven't done it, just that it's rare).

Middle of March. Unless something's changed

from what ive read water also allows put more volts on memories
so u may go a little higher than standart 1.65v 1600C8

wait for the new d0 steppings

That's what I'm waiting on. Everything improves in time. Just like the E0 stepping Wolfdales are clocking 200-300MHz higher than the C0's. Hopefully by the time the D0's hit, there will be a solid selection of MB's and BIOS support for these as well. Right now, everything related to i7 feels like a an experiment where everyone that purchased is a guinea pig. I like to wait for revisions as software and hardware maturity is less headache.

Wait for the new d0 steppings and prices to drop.

If you are not running 7x 295gtx's, there is no need to upgrade unless you are still on a P4.

I run my 920 24/7 at 4.2Ghz with turbo and HT on with 1.41v vcore. My temps are a little skewed since I have a chiller, but with my liquid set at 18 c my chip never goes over 50c under prime load, but the reality is that the chip can go as high as 90c before problems would occur. I use to have the QX9650 and had it overclocked to 4.2Ghz and I can tell you that there is a difference when it comes to stuff that utilizes multi-threading such as video conversions. In games there are very little difference due to the fact that once you past 3.6Ghz on your CPU the video card is what will have the biggest impact on game play. If you do not have one yet and you do not have a Microcenter (920's are $230 there) in your area then wait for the DO stepping. Of course, it may be a few months before that stepping makes it way to the 920 in retail, but if you already have a good quad, then it's no big deal.

 :ROTF:

The entire reason I started this thread is because I was at microcenter and saw it on sale :yepp:

Just buy one from Microcenter, overclock and enjoy. Sell it in two months for 20 bucks less and buy yourself a DO stepping, rinse and repeat. Have fun with your toys.

YMMV

Your milage will vary.

your chip gives you the clocks, not the waterkit!

Someone in one of the forums here got their 920 to 4650mhz on air!!! the board helps quite a bit too ;) DFI FTW

D0 stepping is released today...maybe the imc is better...

I have been running at 4.2ghz daily, but lately i'm getting BSOD's when i try to boot at that speed. I think my imc is going out. It will run perfectly fine at stock speeds, but if i overclock at all, i get a blue screen. On my 2nd set of memory, so unless my board is killing memory, the imc is my prime suspect. Sucks cause there is a huge hit between running 4.2 and 2.6.

yup thats me i am on pentium 4 with a pci geforce 6200 card which can barely render combat arms ( its the only fps game i can play on it if your asking)

whens the best time to get i7+ mobo

i was thinking after x58 revision and i7 revision

most 920s can get to 4 ghz but i am not sure if they stay like that 24/7
