Dilemma here. I thought I was getting a Xonar DX as I already have some Logitech X540s.. but 70RMS watts just isn't as nice as 155RMS watts :D At the same time I also want a decent soundcard - on-board doesn't cut it  but I also have a Sonicfury I could bust out as stand-in. So take your vote guys, and feel free to add your 2c! Oh, both the soundcards and speakers are the same price, £60 + postage.

Thread is also here cos.. well.. people never go in the actual audio sub-forum and I'm ordering today :p:

DX, you might get supprised how well the speakers sound after a decent soundcard, (mate has them and they actually sound really nice he has the dx2)

Well.. 2 votes so far in favor of the G51s, I'll put my old faithful sonicfury back in and see how it sounds vs. the on-board. If it sounds pretty good.. well then it doesn't really help much at this stage lol.

Xonar 2 votes.. G51s 3 votes. Anyone else? Oh I done some listening with my Sonicfury now as well.. I got a strange feeling after using it again for a while.. my ears actually felt assaulted by music instead of a musical mess! Even todays supposed "crowning jewel" of on-board audio from Realtek can't even come close to my 6-year-old Sonicfury. 64 hardware notes and 1024 software notes FTW!

I say go for a new sound card, when you are looking at that price range.... then save up for some Logitech Z5500s. No sense in cheaping out on the speakers, since they will be compatible with whatever sound card and computer you get in the future. :)

I upgraded from a X-FI platnum pci card to a pci-e titanium card, i also have the 540's, and i can say they sound TONS better with the titanium card, and the Daniel K drivers off the creative site....

I've heard both sets quiete a large amount.

I actually think they are the same speakers to be brutally honest.

Buy the Z5500, use optical and the speakers use their own DAC.

Don't bother buying the card, just save ur money, it won't show well on those speakers, trust me.

SAVE FOR Z5500
SAVE FOR Z5500
SAVE FOR Z5500
SAVE FOR Z5500
SAVE FOR Z5500

Ah ok, I wondered about how good these speakers would sound with a decent soundcard, so I'll stick with getting the Xonar DX

The new sound card will offer more acceleration in A3D, and positional audio processing for games, and also the inputs will be higher quality, so I would say the new card is not a waste by any means... but I agree he should save up for Z5500s

I voted for the G51's but if saving for the Z-5500's is an option, do that.

Onboard sound has come a long way, and on entry speakers (what you have now), you won't be able to hear any difference. That DX card has been dropping in price too, seen it for $60 a couple of times, should be cheap enough to get down the road a bit.

Regardless, if your motherboards have the Realtek ALC888 / 889 / 1200 chip, you ought be fine for now, get the speakers first!!!

I've looked at a lot of reviews for my X540s, they get glowing reviews, so I can't help thinking the on-board and my sonicfury can't do them enough justice. I did notice a significant difference switching from on-board to my sonicfury with my X540s, so hopefully a Xonar DX will unlock their quality fully, an from there I can make a much more informed choice about speakers  I'll deffinately be getting either the G51s or the Z5500s as my next set of speakers. Found the Z5500s for as low as £170 + postage, which isnt too terrible.
