I wondered why Lamptron's (and Frozen CPUs) website described the fanatic's 3 modes as 12v/ 5v/ off when PPCs, a couple reviews I read, and guys here were are sayin' 12v/ 7v/ off.

I just got an email from Lamptron and apparently the current model is indeed 5v in the mid-position, the "old" one is 7v.

Would 5v vs. 7v. result in much noticable difference?

edit: got a reply to another email (Lamptron's customer service seems awesome) in which I asked why they went from 7v to 5v

this was the reply

"we change 7VDC to 5VDC because we have made internal test that 7VDC will be not enough power to push the high power concumption devices than 5VDC.
this will be not good for end users.

because from the PC power,7VDC is coming from the difference from 12VDC and 5VDC,so it is not a very safe way to offer.and 5VDC is a stable power source for users.

this is why we changes them to 5VDC.

....

I don't really get the jist of this other than there's a benefit to matching the voltage to the PSU 5v. Or is that pretty much it? (and if so, why?) Any further explanation from someone in the know about voltages would be appreciated.
