I just got a new entertainment center from my friend who was leaving town and I have a huuge problem. I have my PS3 up on top of it in a confined space and there's no way for the heat to escape. The fans are blowing on max after about 5-10 minutes.

I want to poke a hole in the back of the center (it's an ikea with one of those cardboard backs) and run a quiet fan (like a 120mm case fan or so) out the back to eject the heat so the PS3 won't get noisy. Plus, it can't be good to have all that heat in there.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking about buying one of those case fans and trying to find a way to hook it up to a USB port on the PS3, but I'm not sure if that's even possible.

Personally i would try to avoid putting it inside an entertainment center, and plugging in any kind of homemade usb cooling solution will most likely void any kind of warranty you have with it. Modding your entertainment center sounds interesting , just make sure you mount the fan properly or be prepared for some obnoxious vibrating.

u dont want to put the ps3 in there at all. the ps3 will turn that confined area into an oven an bake that ps3 to death. I am tellin u this from experience lol. I sat the ps3 in my entertainment center (it was open to the front) and that was more than enuff to start a chain reaction. The ps3 had to go back to sony about 4 times until i ended up gettin a new one. so just try to put it somewhere open with no confinment. peace

The oven comparison is no exaggeration. I put my ps3 on top of my directv box inside of a cabinet and you could open the doors and warm your hands.

Pick up an old and dodgy PSU, and short the green and black pins on the ATX connector to start it running. Attach all the fans you want.

Of course, watercooling is a far, far more attractive prospect - but that could just be me :p:
