My physics professor just told the class yesterday that they have a new machine shop that any of us can use. He said they have a lathe, a milling machine, a drill press, and a bunch of other expensive goodies. At first I didn't think of any uses for it, but then I remembered that I could try to fabricate custom waterblocks. Can anyone give me any tips or point me to a good tutorial? I don't really know where to begin.

How nice is the machine shop? You can theoretically make anything you can construct in SolidWorks, limited only by the quality of the tools and your own skill with the tools in question.
