I am thinking of buying this laptop. It costs about 1300$. I want to use it for Programming, watching movies, college homework (i study computer engineering and i use programs like spice, matlab etc) and some gaming (don't care about running games in high end graphics)

What do you think?

maybe this will help you ...
of all the lappy's & desktops for that matter that come through the shop hp's are the least problematic and the fewest in number & have never replaced 1 of thier screens ...

it's always eazy to get a restore disc from the manufacturer (most of our customers screw up the restore partition )

no eye dont work for them hope this helps

ya that sounds like it will do you just fine

as far as batt go thier all about the same some last better than others but imo it's normally due to how the owner uses the unit .. to many veriables thier ya know
allways check for good fitting power supply plug contac .. see a lot of that ;)

also DONT let batt's get hot do all you can to keep them cool

good luck

for shure thier are more laptop savvy ppl here tham me

I bought the HP Pavilion Entertainment PC dv5-1150us about a month ago and I love it. It came with 4GB DDR2, Vista_x64, lots of HD space. I got an unbelievable deal on it. Paid $700.00 delivered when it was retailing everywhere for $1000.00

I would say that laptop should handle the tasks you have mentioned no problem.

I also found the dv5-1160 which is the same but it has the t9400 (2.53ghz 6mb cache) cpu with 30$.

Should i get the dv5-1160?

heck ya if 30 bucks is all the differance ! 2.53 and 6 mb cache will kick butt

Yeah, it's worth the extra $30. Invest in a cooler for it, though. NVIDIA GPUs tend to get hot under load.

I have also found the dv5-1199 which is 120$ less but it has 250GB hard disk (instead of 320gb) and the P8600 (instead of 9400). It also has better screen...

Define "better screen". Higher resolution? If so, you might find that useful. You'll find higher resolutions to be helpful considering the applications you use.

Well I agree 1280 x 800 seems soo TINY

when I went from that to a 1440 x 900 on my alienware m7700 I was amazed, i wish I would of got that upgraded screen 1920 x 1080, but when I got my syncmaster 22" at 1680 x 1050, freaking loved it
when I go to 1920 x 1080, I can't wait! :)

Laptop is lookin good, I would invest in a better screen then a 1280 x 800

well from working with hp I can tell you I wouldnt recommend their notebooks

let me tell you that most others are even worse...
Acer sucks. Weak build quality, cheap and fragile plastics, etc.
Asus cheap models: ditto.
Fujitsu-Siemens cheap models: the same; and even Lifebooks are made of
wimpy flexing plastics
MSI: like above

The hp I owned and those I've seen have been put together much
sturdier and had way less flex than most notebooks.
Toshibas are also said to be decent.
Vaios are expensive, here at least.

OP: be aware that the 9600M GT is about the same level as a desktop
8600GT. If I were you, I'd rather take something like the HD36x0 series
or wait for the HD46x0 series.
IMO there are better deals to be had than $1300.
Also, I don't think a 2.4-2.5G cpu is necessary for the tasks you
mentioned, if price is a concern -- the gpu will be much more of a
bottleneck.

I found the HP dv5-1145ev
specs:
Intel Code 2 Duo P8600 (2.4Ghz, 3mb cache)
3GB ram DDR2
Nvidia Gefore 9600M GT 512MB
Sata 320gb
Screen size 15.4''
Screen resolution 1280x800 WXGA

at 1000$. I think it's a good deal...

Same specs as in post #3, but $300 less, do I see that right?
If yes, then it's a better deal.

But as I said, the 9600M GT = 8600GT, so don't expect much
from it.

I have to say, I was impressed with my HP/Compaq. It's an old NC8000 I got when I was in school, oh... 4 years ago (maybe 5?). The silver has rubbed off the mouse buttons, half the keys are nearly unreadable, the hard drive had to be replaced 6 months ago, and the screen died on me at the 3 year 6-month point. The replacement screen just started to die on me, and the DVD Drive is toast now, so I'm replacing it. It's just not economical to keep it running, although it does run fine and feels really solid.

I'm replacing it with an Asus N80Vn-X5 from Newegg. A little smaller, a lot more powerful. I've heard good things about their laptops and their warranty service, so we'll see if I like it as much as the HP.

Gateway is crap and should be avoided. I have a co-workers Gateway on my kitchen table that I just finished re-assembling. It quit working with a month left on the warranty, Gateway tech support claimed the warranty was up already since it was purchased a month before the manufacture date stamped on the battery. Made my coworker cry, called her ignorant and otherwise berated her, until she gave up.

I must say, I was NOT impressed with what I found inside. Very shoddy workmanship in the way of missing screws, broken plastic tabs, and the like. It never should have made it through QA.

lets put it this way. I work at a company that repairs 250 laptops a day, 2/3 of them HP's and you couldnt give away an HP to any of the techs there. After having worked on HP's, you see that they are defective pieces of garbage. Their motherboards have all too common defects, especially with nVidia chipsets.

Essentially if you want a laptop with the least chance of failure stick with intel everything and dont buy HP.

Iīve got a HP Laptop myself. I donīt know the exact product but itīs also somethink like the one from SSJ5. Itīa bit better though, 17", 4GB Ram, 2x320Gb.
First of all the Laptop came with vista 32bit.. kinda weird.
There is no oppurtunity to downgrade to XP due the lack of driver support (i wanted to do this, because the Laptop is just for working/media purpose).
There are many apps preinstalled, that nobody needs and they just slow down your system.
So i probably wouldnīt get a HP Notebook again, but it does itīs job..
