The new Palm Pre may be the most-anticipated new phone since the iPhone 3G, but there's yet another new player on the way: PC maker Dell may be readying its own smartphone, to arrive as early as next month.
Dell could make an announcement at 3GSM or the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona in mid-February 2009, say some analysts.

The title should read: "Now everybody is making smartphones" :)

I really don't mind if everybody and their mother is making a smartphone, in the end I'm only concerned with what I, as a consumer, have available to me, with certain features, at a certain price.

Despite the availability of the open source Android operating system, Dell is likely to pick the Windows Mobile platform.

Great, Dell, you're irrelevant.

Let's hope for their sake what's likely and what will actually be done isn't the same.

ive been hearing this news since a few years back when they stopped making the 51v. i hope their build quality is the same for the phone as for that ppc, nothing ive owned till this day could compare

I dont know if dell can thrive in this market considering how many devices there already are on the market.

Uninformed fools pretending to be tech journalists.
Dell has been making pdas for a long time now, way before apple.
Dell Axim anyone?
And the picture shows an htc TyTN II (kaiser) pda; not to mention
that the other pics I saw were also pdas (smartphone = windows
mobile standard <--> no touchscreen; pda = windows mobile pro
<--> touchscreen)

I've had good experiences with Dell myself, but c'mon. This is just a little much for me. Besides, in a recession isn't unveiling new products in new areas (for your business) one of those things you're supposed to avoid?

Damn, the phone industry changes more often than the PC business. Phones got smaller then bigger again but now with more crap in them. Slide out keyboards, now most have started going to touchscreen interface. Its going to be hard for even Dell to keep up.

Even with Andriod/PalmOS/Apple(iphone) you cant beat the software diversity of WinMo. :yepp:

yup and Frank M summed it up nicely.

I find it odd that they stepped out of making PDAs, now they are coming back in

I like it. But at the end of the day, all I need my phone to do is dial numbers, I dont see the point in having things like that.

I just dont think people will be interested in a Dell smartphone...Watch, I will launch and be a complete iPhone clone.
