View Full Version : 3 single rads sufficent for quiet WC'ing of i7 920 + GTX260?

I've gone for a dedicated air cooling setup for my i7 build but am now wondering if it's worth switching to watercooling. My top prority is silence with a mild overclock and second priority is to stick to internal watercooling. As I wasn't initially planning on watercooling, the case I have (Lian-Li PC-X500) only allows me to have three internal 120.1 single rads, and only two of them can be thick rads.

Would I be able to effectively cool an i7 920 (mild oc to 3.6Ghz) and a GTX260 with two thick single rads (like the TC 120.1 or the new XSPC RX120.1) and a very thin single rad (like the Black Ice stealth 120.1 - or any suggestions here?) with minimal noise, meaning 120mm fans running at around 1000rpm, or preferably at 850rpm? And would a quiet submerged pump like the XSPC X2O 750 be sufficient to handle three rads and two blocks?

Yeah, fannage and radiator-wise, you should be good to go. For me, an H20-220 Compact (MCR-220 Res + Apogee Drive) with a single 830RPM fan got the same temps on an OC'd QX6700 as an IFX-14 with dual 1600RPM fans

The 260 should dump a little less heat than the i7, so 3x120.1s should do pretty well

As for the pump...I'll have to defer to someone else about that :p:

I have a Q6600 at 3.7ghz and a gtx 260 overclocked to maximum, and it is all running on a 120.2 thermochill since the 2nd 120.2 had a leak in it(waiting on replacement). Temps are excellent, and im debating whether to put the other 120.2 in the for sale section.

q6600 ain't exactly the same thing as i7 920 ;)

q6600 ain't exactly the same thing as i7 920 ;)Heatwise they're surprisingly close...don't let temperatures tell you otherwise, the wattage dumped into the loop is VERY close!

extreme.outervision says a

go q6600 @ 4ghz @1.5v is 228w
i920 @4ghz @1.5v is 305w

just my centimos

But a 965XE at 4000/1.5 is 254W? :p: (when, in reality, the higher binned chips probably have more leakage and therefore run hotter)

They're just using TDP * (OCc/STOCKc) * (OCv/STOCKv)^2

They don't take into account actual power usage stats :(

yeah i tried the other chips to ..hahahah they put out less heat at 4ghz..hahahah oh well i have the i940 coming.i'll test it when it arrives...i love my kill-a-watt:up:

i ran an intel prescott 3 ghz clocked to 3.8ghz and a pair of 6800 ultras in sli with two 120mm rads for the longest time. i think the heat dump of that system is probably comparable to yours (guessing) so i think you'll be ok.
