So my Vaio S460 has a Pentium M 1.7ghz CPU, and 1.5gb of ram.

Now if I got one of the new netbooks with the ATOM processors @1.6ghz

How can the 1.6ghz compare to my 1.7ghz Pentium?

The atoms compare to a celeron 900.

So half the speed or less.

Yeah, your cpu is a lot faster, ram about the same. If your notebook feels sluggish think about upgrading the hdd to a newer/faster, most centrino-platform laptops came with a slow 4200/5400RPM HDD, netbooks ssd's are faster, replacing it by a modern 5400RPM or 7200RPM will increase the responsiveness a lot! I've heard good things about the Spinpoint M2 120gb drives, 7200rpm drives might be hard to find these days.

I'm using a Compaq N620C, 1.6Ghz dothan 1gb 7K60 hdd myself, and it's much faster in surfing/office-work than the eeepc 900 that my brother has

The netbook might feel faster at first, but when you start watching movies and doing stuff you'd normally do on a laptop, it'll slow down A LOT. It's good for simple word processing, easy web surfing but it's a far cry from a notebook.

If you can, wait for the dual core Atom laptops, the IGP will get updated and nvidia's small scale Atom based ION platform (much better IGP) might find its way into the laptop market.
