View Full Version : Shrouds (fans in or out)

I'm new to WC and I dont understand the point of having fans inside the shroud, will someone explain this to me? It seems that the whole point of shrouds are to create suction between the fan and the rad, so the fan must go on the outside of the shroud. what good is it having the fans on the inside?

I'm not sure what you want me to look at in those pics. There aren't any shrouds in them .

i think you may have your shrouds and grills confused...can you elaborate on your first post?

There is a shroud on the PA120.3 in my picture of PermaFrost posted above.

In my build the point of putting the fans inside the shroud was to hide them, I didn't want to see and of the ugly plastic housing on the fan, I even considered using a shroud on the rear exhaust to hide the housing, but that will come later.

the PA120.3 shroud is bigger height-wise than the fans so you still get some added benefit than the fans being straight on the radiator.

Fans are quieter suspended inside a shroud than hard-mounted to the rad. If done right the shroud acts as a muffler.

The fans should be mounted outside the shroud according to thermochill :)

Dono, maybe you can mount them inside to. But don't you lose performance by putting them inside? Sure, there is a small gap even if you have them inside.

You can. Temps suffer a few c, but you gain a few Db in the process if you know how to finagle things ;)

If I put shrouds on my TFC 360 and put the fans on top of them I'd never fit the thing inside my case.

The reason for a shroud is to minimize (if not completely remove) the dead spot from the fan when pushing air through the rad, it also helps make sure all the air goes through the rad. The fan(s) is should be placed on the outside to maximize this effect.

ok, do you not know what shrouds are? not the grills silly. I circled them in red for you 3 people that dont know

Anyways.....from the people that know wtf shrouds are...I got some answers..

Reason for fans INSIDE shroud:
1.Looks cool, hides fans
2.Dampen Sound
or
3. Builder doesnt know the purpose of shrouds

Reason for fans OUTSIDE shroud:
1. lower temps, remove dead spot
2. suction/increase airflow
3, Builder is using shrouds for their intended creation

iirc, shroud works best if you put the fans in pull configuration.

well I explained my reasoning for my build... I think its perfectly valid to put the fans inside the shroud they are still farther away from the rad core than if they were mounted directly to the radiator

snippedog, your build looks great, fans do look clean inside shroud, I just wanted to make sure I wasnt taking crazy pills, cause I'm seeing a lot of people put fans inside their shrouds, and I need confirmation that I'm not going insane.

as opposed to what? they are always in a pull/push config.. (if fans are on both sides of the rad) no one would make a push/push, or a pull/pull config right? so its always gonna be a push/pull setup.

only if you put fans on only 1 side of the rad would you be faced with the decision to push OR pull... but then you are losing performance by not having fans on both sides

um... you could install fans on one side and push with positive pressure the airflow thru the rad ...

Not that I would do it this way but you asked

...same thing with double-suspending HDDs. Are they intended to be mounted that way? Heck no. Do I do it anyway to gain a few Db? You betcha ;)

yes, fans push on one side, but fans on the other side would pull.... hence, push/pull

if u are only putting fans on one side, it should be pulling for best performance

why do u want to gain Db? you like your PC loud? more Db=louder less Db=quieter

Gain implies a movement in a positive direction, or progress toward a goal. When I "gain a few Db", I'm inching closer to my ultimate PC goal: silence without sacrifice.

 whatever, guess fat people need to "gain" weight

No, because it has established cultural context opposite your meaning. At SPCR we talk all the time about making Db gains. Here we talk about gaining a few c when we are referring to lower temps. It's all contextual.

Not just reading, understanding ;)

For example I gained cooling ability when I swapped my mcr220 for a mcr320.
