loved in the front computer all the time, got nothing to do thought...played in many forum liked this..also loved playing online games and do folding all day....never get bored when i'm in front my computer LoL

just switch to DDC3.2 that turn out pretty hot on the base...so i give it a 6mm fan from my old AMD stock cooling....

Yes, I'm on it during the day and it crunches during the night (and the day). I only turn it off when I leave my apartment for a weekend etc., but maybe that's being overly paranoid too.

I've left for a week.

I have done this on phase

tec I turn off when I leave the room.

Na, turn the computer off when not using it. During nights etc. Just consumes a lot of electricity. Not good for the environment as well as being good for your wallet.

24/7/365 here, well except for the odd extended power failure...lol! CPU and GPU run full load with WCG and F@H.

Dido... as well as I want to be there if something went wrong LC... Not that I dont have faith in it, or that anything has gone wrong. Too paranoid?

Out of my 5 comps the only one that doesn't run 24/7 is a laptop. Of course 3 of them are servers so they really can't go down. My WCed comp runs close 24/7 I shut down a lot for swapping out parts and what not.

DaMulta
12-27-2008, 02:52 AM
If I can get away without shutting down on adding parts I do that too.

Like install a PCI card or HDD DVD of that nature.

Thank you device manager LOL.

Personally I think it's pretty stupid to let the computer run during the night if you are not using it. If you are folding or such I would understand but to just keep it on, looks bad in my eyes.

i think that its environmentally friendly it acts like a heater for my room and then the rest of the house dosnt need heat :yepp: so and it dosnt have exhaust or leaks through ducting

I hate when I turn off my computer and it does not turn back on or boot back up.

So I dont turn it off. You say that does not happen that much. I say BS to many times to count I installed some junk or part had died when I was in windows just fine. Then I went to turn it off or reset and I'm banging my head on my desk......

24/7 no hibernation no turning off the HDD. Monitor does get turned off......

I have almost ran the window a/c at night all winter...(I would open the window but the a/c unit is in the way LOL)...no heater needed lol.

24/7/365

I rarely shut mine down. The only reason I ever do is when it's required restart for software or when I need to do some hardware tweaking/replacements.

I also run WCG the entire time my PC is up.

no but comp is on 24/7. pump turns on automatic when it reaches 37 degree.
(in idle it doesnt go above 30 without cooling. )

No for me. If I could I would though. Mine is just a little too loud and since its in my room and I'm somewhat of a light sleeper it would be really hard to get to sleep . Not that is really really loud, just that I have can't fall asleep unless is quiet :D.

The system I run my WC is on 24/7 but not watercooled 24/7 :D Basically WC'd except when I'm running aircooling on it :p: (probably 80/20 in favor of aircooling time right now--that's bound to change eventually though)

moiraesfate
12-27-2008, 10:27 AM
Even if I had WCing, the answer would be no. I can't. I live in New Orleans where thunderstorms during the spring, summer, and fall make it unrealistic.

When I first moved here, I left my computer plugged in and we got hit by a freak thunderstorm. Ended up with a dead monitor though the computer itself was ok. I won't repeat the same mistake again.

If I'm not using it, its unplugged. It costs too much to replace parts if there's an electrical surge.

If it needs to have a defrag or virus check, its done when I'm around to turn it off or when there's no chance at all of precipitation.

Your computer is not 'destroying' energy when it is left on. The energy is merely converted to heat. If you are heating your house anyways, then its not really costing you much at all. The harder your cpu works, the less your furnace has to.

That being said, I still turn mine off once in awhile, just because its a little noisy and has lots of lights on it.

I leave mine on all the time for the heat as well. I like my room being warm. Even in the summer when the Air is on, I want my room to be a bit warmer than the rest of the house. I as well had a few issues with lightning playing peek-a-boo with us, so I went and got the most expensive Battery Backup Unit I could find. The info on the box wasn't very helpful though. Some 120 minutes of run time turned into 12 for my rig. 20 if I shut off my monitor. *That use to be 18 but I guess I gained a few minutes since I took the fan off my video card and got it being water cooled now. And the fan is also off my northbridge as well. Water cooling can save energy! And it's much more quiet!

I do shut down if I'm gone for a few days though.

It's too expensive for me to leave mine on all the time, I actually bought a laptop to cut down my power bill and after nearly a year I'm already ahead on the bill. The laptop was about $1100 too.

12-29-2008, 04:52 AM
nope I don't, in the early days when I wasn't WC'ing (blame on me ^^), I let it ran as much as possible to get as much credits with seti, rosetta, primegrid etc ... but since I'm of the thought that's useless power consumption and offcourse my parents ... I just run it when necessairy

and it runs sometimes 24/7 when I'm downloading a big torrent ..., longest uptime was like 3 days, and then I putted it like a half our down to cool down :p:

Our house is electric heat, so in the winter I'm really not using much more energy with my PC on than off, because the heat from the PC heats the room instead of the electric heat so that works out quite well :D

I voted yes, but I turn it off at night so subtract one vote for yes and put it with no, I was thinking about benching only for some reason. I am sorry its early here and I'm not used to waking up early.

jbartlett323
12-29-2008, 10:45 AM
i always have all my rigs run 24/7/365... really they don't seem to use too much power (at least my bill hasn't gone up more than a few bucks) and it makes sure that they get all updates and scans and whatever else it wants to do... started crunching a couple months ago so thats another reason...

Also in my expirience it is when you shutdown/ reboot that you will find any hardware failure... obviously it happens when its on too just not as often in my expirience... also shutting down daily puts extra stress on your drives as they park/unpark and go through the boot loading...

So i always recommend to everyone to leave it on all the time and reboot once a week and your golden! never had anyone complain yet!:D

24/7

I just hate not having it at the ready whenever I want it. And I fold.

T_Flight
12-29-2008, 05:14 PM
I'm not gonna vote yet until I get mine all setup, but for my computers so far they never get shutdown. It just puts them through heat cycles and stresses things more. The surge of continuous powerups and downs isn't good for them. The only time they are rebooted is for software reboots or for routine matenence to get rid of dust and stuff like that.

Other than that I will shut them down when i go on vacations or trips away for extended periods during the Summer months. We can get nasty T-Storms in my area so I have to rpotect them.

All of my computers fold 24/7/365 unless I pause the clients on one machine for flight simming. Electricty? Blah! We have hydro plants and Nuke plants here. I pay my electric bill and no more than my 3 computers use it's not even worth looking at.

12-29-2008, 05:25 PM
It runs for as long as it stays together in one piece... which is approximately two weeks at a time, until I find something I want to add, substract, change, hack or slash :P

"Idle" is uncharted territory for my computer :P

I run mine 24/7 but I use Vista's sleep mode which essentially turns the computer off after 30 minutes.

On a side note, I've tried many times to get the BIOS option - Wake on LAN, wake on PCI/PCIE, etc., to work properly; however, I have yet to get it to work. If i try to access the machine while it's in sleep mode via CAT 6/Ethernet the machines never wake up. Has anyone figured out what the trick to this is? I've tried it with several different boards with no luck on any of them.

Whenever I'm not gaming my machine is folding 2xGPU clients and one SMP client. I have two DCC355 pumps in my loop just for backup. There's two voltmodded 2900XT's , q6600@3,6GHz and NB in my loop and they've been under 99% stress for over a year now. I usually restart OS (vista 64bit) about once a week when updating security software/drivers etc.

I run 7 computers 24/7 (Folding@home) and five of them are watercooled (CPU + GPUs and also NB on some of them). Never any water leakage problems so far (more than one years production on most setups).
