My parents just got the ADSL and now i want to secure my bor comp more. How do i do to make his system the safest possible as he will surely be on the net 24/24?
He's using win2k sp4 and he's always up to date with ms patches

A hardware router/firewall, software firewall, and obligitary anti-virus in combo should do the trick. I.e. Netgear MR814 and Sygate personal FW, and Norton Anti-virus. Plus some user education on what to open or ignore works well too.

Sygate personal is free for private use, you can d/l it from http://smb.sygate.com/buy/download_buy.htm A hardware solution is left to your budget, you can find different models and manufacturers anywhere from $50 and up. As far as security goes, SPI ( stateful packet inspection) is better than just plain NAT (network address translation) as it will inspect incoming/outgoing packets for established IP/tcp sessions. In general though, they will cost a few dollars more.

Personally, I like Netgear over Linksys ATT. Once Cisco starts putting more of their influence into the Linksys software my preference may change. ;) I would look to allocate maybe $100 for something decent, but other members will be chiming in with their preferences and recommendations soon and you can should be able to take it from there.

There's also Zonealarm (http://download.com.com/3000-2092-10217783.html?tag=lst-0-1) which is free, works really well, and is easy to use. I run it on all my machines, and I also have a Microsoft MN100 router which has proven to be about the best router so far that I've used. You can sometimes find the router on Ebay slightly used or new for $25 - $40 bux plus shipping. Otherwise they sell for around $80 to $100 bux in the stores. I got mine off ebay and it has worked flawlessly.

10x tweaked, my bro tried the sygate firewall and like it, he had problems with lots of virus and worms on his comp always coming back but now it's seems to be solved

For those who owns the Sygate personal firewall, can you tell me what the red number means in the graph? I'll look on the website but i found nothing about it

your red number is an an unauthorised attempt to access your comp by sites or other net users
