Right now I have a MCR320 setting beside me ready to cool my i7 920. I am planning to OC it to 4.0Ghz for everyday use. Will a MCR220 be enough to get the job done? If I swich to a MCR220 I will be able to keep my WC kit all internal. While MCR320 will force me to mount it in the back of the case. Not really a big problem but I think internal looks better.

Also, I am getting the Foxconn bloodrage mobo, which comes with a copper/brass-top water block. Does it help if a put it with the CPU loop? I worry either MCR220 cannot take the heat or the water is hotter than cooling it with air.

Thanks in advance.

If you've got the MCR320, I'd say go for it. Both rads will cool your cpu, but the bigger, the the better. You could definitely get away with the MCR220 if you really like the internal look better.

I think it just might work, but your temps may be higher than you might be used to with Core2. I had my i7 920 @ 4ghz on the stock air cooler. It wasn't stable but I think with better cooling it would be. It's a pretty warm cpu but as long as it's stable I don't really care. I think the i7's run warmer but are a lot more stable.

You know, there is only one way to find out. Do it and report back your findings.

i7's will be hotter than your traditional Core2 (Non-Extreme). The i7's are 130w TDP versus 95w TDP on the Yorkfields.

I think you shoudl be fine. These CPU's can run at higher temps than yorkies.

the bigger, the the better.

That statement is not always true, it is entirely possible that a double rad can dissipate enough heat and that a triple rad will make no difference other than add additional restriction to the loop.

Your best bet is to test it out since nobody knows enough about your configuration and ambient room temps to know how it will be affected by an i7 overvolted by an unknown amount.

I will give it a shot after I get my hands on the bloodrage mobo, but first I need to get a MCR220. Couple questions though. How do you effectively drain the loop? And about how long does it take for a cpu to reach max temp with prime?

In 10mins u get max temp.
Since i own mcr220 and thermochill double rad, i can tell you that for just the cpu u will have no problems using mcr220 in general.
But what u should have in mind is that moving the radiator inside the case makes big difference. I could see 5C less with rad outside the case than when i had it inside case.

MCR220 with 750rpm fans (probably lower even) is more than enough for my qx6700 b3 at 3.7ghz with 1.5v
