View Full Version : Low profile cooling

The power supply in a build idea that I have is directly above the cpu. I will be water cooling, so I am wondering what the lowest profile I can get using the EK supreme. I am assuming that right angles can be used, but I also want to use compression fittings. So how high would this end up being?

On a side note, would I be able to effectively cool a E8400 and a GTX 280 with a 2x120 radiator?

the compression fittings should fit, as long as you've got around an inch of space or so... but how do you plan on cooling the mosfets, north bridge, 8 pin CPU connector might have to be squeezed to.

you could probably get away with a 120.2 radiator on an e8400+gtx280, but temps won't be fantastic.

The stock cooling will stay on the north/south bridges and mofosets.

What would you recommend for cooling just the 280/E8400 for a radiator?
What kind of temps would I be getting with a Feser 2x120?

Getting 35 idle on the 8400@3.8 stock voltage and 40 idle on the GX2.
This is with a 120.2
Add about 10c on load, it's not great. But it's more then suffice.
Will seperate the loops soon though, 120.3 on the CPU and 120.2 on the GPU.
Also I doubt the 280 will run hotter then a GX2.

Feser or Thermochill would be your best bet for a 120.2 radiator with those components. It's impossible to predict your exact temps because it varies from chip to chip, but don't expect any drastic overclocks.

There is no room for anything more than a 2x120 in the case I am looking at, so I was really wondering just if it would work. Sounds like it should be fine. I am looking for silence, not super speeds. As I am very pushed for space, I was originally looking at using a pico psu and air cooling, but I decided that that was not enough power, so I am now looking at water cooling and using a true power supply.

With silence in mind, what fans would you recommend? I was looking at the Noctua P12s...

I run Yates at 7'ish volt. That's near silent.
There is a huge fan comparison somewhere on the forums, but Noctua's will be fine.
Expensive but good fans, also look at the Scythe's or the Panaflow ones.
Any of the above mentioned are fine, if you want less noise make (or buy) a shroud which will also improve the airflow/effectiveness of your fans.
