Is there any way to reinstall just the system files in XP? I killed my ntoskrnl so this is assuming you can't get into either windows or safemode.

Boot the CD and do a (R)ecovery? You'll lose any SP's, etc back to what's on the CD.

Eh... I don't get the recovery part of it. I mean I have a backup copy of the file, but it won't let me replace it. I just don't want to reinstall again.
It kills what's on my desktop.

From http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/expertzone/tips/february/vinson1.asp :
"boot to the CD and start WINNT.EXE, then when prompted to Install or Repair, click Repair, which installs the Recovery Console for you.

If Windows XP will not start, you can run the Recovery Console from the Setup CD."

(Edit) My bad, my first post said rcovery when I meant repair. Sorry!

Yeah I know, but have you ever used the recovery console? It's a dos screen. and I don't know how to extract 1 file from the disc, so I try to use the copy command (from my backup) and it says access denied".

The recovery part of XP is stupid. Or I'm missing something...

OK, not clear enough - I meant to use the Repair option install - take a look at this link http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm#How%20to%20Repair%20Windows%20XP%20b y%20Installing%20Over%20top%20of%20Existing%20Setu p:

Doing a repair is a reinstall that KEEPS your desktop and installed apps intact.

Let me know if this isn't clear or not what you want.

Yeah, that's what I need. That link didn't work tho. Can you repost it?

And keep in mind, I can't get into windows at all. Not even safemode.

Just so there's no surprises - if the registry is also corrupt, a repair install will NOT work.

As important as the registry is to M$ products, why can't they "harden" it or at least provide an easy, automated backup app?

The reg is fine. BUT It dosen't give me an option for repairing xp, so I gotta mess with a new windows install....

So that I understand - after booting from the CD, keying ENTER to "Setup Windows XP Now", F8 at the license screen,

You DON'T get an option to select R to recover? Does it give an error message or ??? - very strange - while I don't have XP installed currently, I use this feature in Win2k fairly often...
