How can someone split a big file, for example a huge video file (~14GB) in a custom size? In my case I want to split it in 2 so I can write it in a Dual Layer DVD. After that, I want to be able to copy both files to the computer, right click extract here and from the 2 files have one again. Like the torrent ones.

I noticed WinRaR has Split in 1.44MB, 700MB and a few other, but I didnt see any custom size.

Thanks!

Just type a size in (in bytes) and WinRAR will do it. You don't have to use one of the predefined sizes.

Don't want to hijack or change the question asked, but if you happen to have a Blu-Burner a BD disk can hold 25 or 50GB. Just thought I'd throw that out there. I just got one about a week ago and it's nice to have.

WinRar will do it. I've done it before, but it's been awhile. I'd have to play with it again to do it. I did it becasue a forum would only allow a certain max file size for vids and they didn't want to run off 56K users, so we had to break them up. When a user tries to play the video they need all files, and click only on the first file so that it can reassemble (sorry don't know the proper term for that) the files. If you share the vid somewhere in pieces make sure to tell them that or you'll have a 100 replies asking "How do I get this thing to play?" LOL :D

WinZip can also split files.

Thanks for the info. I never thought of just entering the value I want :P

WinRAR is good but i highly recommend 7Zip.. www.7zip.org... its free and it supports everything possible.. :)

WinRAR compresses faster at the cost of final size. Also has recovery volumes.

7-zip compresses very well, but it is a little slower and requires more memory (while compressing). Free & updated often.

7zip is faster, but weaker than RAR.
-mx1 -m0=Deflate
:p:

BTW this topic is about splitting, 7zip is free and does it well.

Shadowdump. Google Slice and Save. Handy little app I use. It is not a compressor, but a file splitter and merger. ;)

What does that command do? Zip deflate option like WinZip 10+?

Deflate is the main zip compression algorithm, AFAIR available from the first zip spec.
mx1 is the fastest mode.

Cool. Any command lines to get maximum compression? Using the native 7zip/LZMA.

Standard zip (& RAR) doesn't compress as well as the 7zip format.

-mmf=bt4 -mfb=273 -mc=512 -md=X
where X=floor((your_mem_size-100)/11.5)
Or use Ultra7z (http://maxcompress.narod.ru/ultra7z.htm) optimizer.

 I have no idea what that means or what you'd even do with it. LOL!

Ugh... this is why I stick to hardware...
