View Full Version : Can't decide on colors: Powder coating

I've been slowly acquiring some parts for water cooling and come winter break for me (Dec 14 - Jan10), I'm hoping to get it all together and finally get a loop set up. I rushed through painting my case this summer and rushed through cutting holes in my motherboard tray for cables - all in all, the holes could be neater and the paint job could be better.

After looking through the old and new water cooling case galleries and some of the workstation gallery, I've come to a road block. I can't decide what colors to get my case coated in.

I looked at Ashraf's build (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=187617) in the water cooling work logs and loved the white/black/metallic blue theme, but then again, I saw Vapor's white/black (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=156396) theme. I could stay with all black, which is what I have right now.

I have a Rocketfish case, and I'm planning on sticking with the brushed, black aluminum exterior. I was planning on drilling out all the rivets so I could get the case coated easier. I would get the case frame coated white, the back panel coated black and all the drive cages coated black. I have all black PCBs. I was thinking about Koolance's compression fittings which are gun metal gray and black tubing, but I'm not sure on any of that.

Oh, just a side note. A friend of the family owns their own business and has a sand blasting station type thing, so I would have easy access to that to strip the paint off.

Just to get the creative ideas flowing and for those that have forgotten, here is a link to a picture of the inside of the Rocketfish. (http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb198/SL_Audio/Miscellaneous/DSC_1440_1.jpg)

Ideas are welcome guys. :)

good idea...i powder coated my case candy red and with the hardrive and dvd trays so close together its hard for the powder to stick to it.

sorta creates a "faraday cage" affect

but the way its comes out you will be pleased... the color just pops out you and looks so much better.

good luck yur color scheme will look nice i think

What are your favorite colors?

Black, blue, green... not a fan of red. It's hard to decide what to do here because there aren't many internal components to get coated and if I get each drive cage coated a different color, it would look like Skittles.

I want to do something that's sleek, so that means no LED/UV fans... just sleek looking based on colors. If I do lights at all, it will be white LEDs just to accent certain things.

How about all black with a lime green trim?

Hoax, you're the man.

You missed the top case frame part though... goes under the top bezel. That would be white too.

It made the realize... motherboard tray would be white too, or the 5.25" bays and the floppy 3.5" bacy would be white with a black motherboard tray.

Looking at it, now I might get all the drive cages in white, case frame in white, and the back panel in black with white PCI slot covers.

I wonder what powder coaters do to prevent the coating from getting in screw holes. Would I have to re-tap the holes?

agreed, black mobo tray + white frame & bays will look great.

+1 on white front door (if possible)

and speaking of possible... this is going to sound very stupid but... is there a way to also paint only the ceiling in white, leaving the original black top untouched? think it would look cool..

Here's the round up:
Motherboard tray: white
Back panel (IO backet/PCI slot panel): black
PCI slot covers: white
Case frame (bottom, top, front): white
Drive cages: white

Seems like a lot of white, but I have all black hardware and I will probably use black tubing. If I get the motherboard tray coated in black, I would use white tubing.

I'm not sure if I could get the ceiling of the case coated white... the heat used to bake the powder coating might mess with the black, brushed anodizing. I'll have to ask about that.

I'll probably get the door coated too, but I don't use the door to start with so... there too.

.

ah thanks. I knew there had to be a reason for not seeing it done before.

the updated list sounds great. can't wait to see how it's going to turn out :)

Nope, been thinking about this for a while. I didn't ask your opinion because I didn't want the "save your money" speech, mom. ;) :p:

I know the speech is a cover up, trying to keep my build from looking better than yours. ;)
