This is one of those once in a lifetime builds.

The Rig is for a Client who rarely upgrades...but when he does he goes to Xtremes to get what he wants :D

Let me be CLEAR. The following hardware is EXACTLY what the client wants. It's not what Cyber told him to get...or what you might want..it's what he wanted and he is completely happy with the spec of the rig as it is stated below. Thanks:)

After working out the details we settled on the Lian Li V2000B old school case. This is still one of the nicest looking cases IMO. But the amount of gear that needed to go into the case was going to make even this 24" x 24" x 8" Tower seem too small.

Where to start:shrug:

Reservoir Details:
Almost 3 dozen individual parts using three tyupes of tube, trianlge extrusion, green and black 1/8", clear 1/4" and 1/2" stock comprise a dual chamber reservoir with a chamfered polished top mounted "lense" and a small cylinder res;
Top facing reservoir has water-tight tube-cavities for CCL and strobe lights that shine through an array of trinagular "prisms" that rest on those tube cavities. A short tube on the bottom of the pond acts as a sump;
Cylinder res is fused to bottom of the top facing res and is made of 1.5" sections of tube with rings of UV green joining 5 tube sections.

Details of mCubed Installation:
BigNG controls all the fans broken into 4 channels: CPU Loop Radiator (3 Fans), GPU Loop Radiator (2 Fans), 120mm Case (3 Fans), 80mm Case (2 Fans) and reads water temps at each Radiator. Com Links attach to the miniNG and SensorHub and an internal USB cable attaches to the motherboard.

MiniNG Controls the Two Pumps and reads water temps at each pump. A Digital Temp probe reads the Chipset temp.

SensorHub Reads two Flowmeters...one for each loop right off the pumps, controls the Automatic Shutdown of the PC, and reads a slew of Analog temp probes for air temp going into the rads, and temps from the 6 HDDs. A DIgital probe reads the RAM temp.

Lighting Specifications:
7 LED tipped toggle switches under safety shields control the Zone lighting consisting of 8 Dual Lamp CCL Kits provide UV, Red, or White light to the Upperor Lower Chambers independently as well as the 9 AC Ryan LED fans lighting independently of the fans operational speed with a mini strobe and CCL UV light kit inside the reservoir.

One question.

Why not go i7?

Thats a question for the customer probably. Plus I'm sure this build started a while back seeing how detailed and involved it is, way before i7 came out.

Definitely too much stuff for this size case. But it all fits and works great. CPU temps 4C above ambient, GFX at 15C above ambient.

No it was incredibly stressful and is probably the main reason Iam going to scale back on fulltime case modding.

The fan and light wiring gave me carpal tunnel syndrome. It took about three weeks for that to heal. I also cut the hell out of my left hand drilling a piece of scrap. It doesn't help that I've also been sick now for about two months with a persistent cold and various other flu bugs the kids bring home from school. I also had two falls on the motorcycle during this build...one of them tore me up pretty good and my right shoulder is still wonky. I have not had a proper night's rest in weeks. That and the fact that I spent maybe three times longer doing this than I planned has sort of taken the thrill of the build from me. It's a monument to my persistence though. I never quit. bandaged, coughing my guys out, working around my infirmities I still put in so many 14 hour days I have lost count. I started dreaming about the wiring for a while..that was not fun. And now that it's 28F outside I am just glad that I have no more shop work for this particular unit.

In the future I plan to take on less challenging work that does not wear me out to this point. 3 weeks is long enough to obsess on a build...3 months is a bit too long for my blood.

I am grateful to the client for the challenge. Like I said this is a Once in a lifetime Build and I am glad I had the opportunity. I am also glad to be prepping this rig for shipping.

I do hear ya man. I am the same way. That's why I bought the BenchMaster techstation from Geno (BoxGods). I build my own techstations all the time...but when I saw the powdercoated steel prototype he made I had to have it. And I am still thrilled with it.

There is something wonderful about supporting another artist. Especially when their vision and your vision correspond.

$9000 real US dollars? Holy crap, I think the only builds I've seen that are that expensive are Maximum PC's Ultimate PC of the year. How does it add up to 9k?

CyberDruid

Go to start, programs, accessories, calculator.

Go back to page 1 and start adding :D

When you've figured out all the HW costs subtract that from $9000 and that's my fee. Divide that by about 500 and you will have derived my hourly rate. But please don't tell me...I'm already on the verge of depression :p:

CD, I must say I am more curious about your customer than anything else. Who could possibly know all that could go inside a pc?

I was not impressed by this build but I am still a CD fan!

CyberDruid
11-19-2008, 09:03 PM
I'm not sure he thought all that could fit. That's the part I do :D Size-alignment Man...I have strong visual/spatial ability...almost savant. I can pack a 20' cargo container so there is almost no dead space.

The deal with a PC is that I have to also visualize airflow, servicability, aesthetics (though you might disagree ;)) and mechanical properties like the amount you can bend or flex something. It's not that big a deal...but there was so much to juggle I found that I needed a little extra time to process it. I refused to rush assembly of stuff like the reservoir because of nagging doubts about other HW conflicts: and sure enough the Icy Dock and the HD4970X2s were the pinch points. They controlled the layout of cylinder and sump. I also needed to have almost every piece of HW installed just to see all the conflicts. Some of the clearances are less than 1/8" so it's notso easy to guess or "do it by eye" without making a problem for some other part later in the assembly.

It's kind of odd but usualy it takes me at least a day to start seeing the layout...this was more like a week. And even then I would repeatedly assemble and disassemble to assure myself Iwason the right track.

A few last minute additions were managed too...like the Velociraptors. Those were a very last minute addition. That was the only real estate left. But it tunred out that they get cooled by the Rad/PSU air flow...so it worked out pretty well. And I was really having to do and undo a lot of work toward the end as I workedthe cables into position. There's slews of leads and sensors and links from the mCubed gear on top of the typical stuff you have to manage. And to get all that to lay flat so the sidepanel closes nicely was a few days in the making.

The switch panel was one of the last things installed and had literally been keeping me from getting any decent sleep. I kept feeling there was going to be a snag there. But apparently not.

The lighting kits were the last layer so fishing all those leads (8 dual lamp CCL kits, a ministrobe, 38 LEDs) was tedious indeed.

It became truly impossible to do any sort of stealth wiring...it was obvious as I got toward the end that neat bundling and routing was the only option.

I'm still thinking too much about this build. I'll be glad to do something simple like fab a techstation prototype or swap CPUs on the Blitz :)

I know several guys who ended up killing their business on "whale" customers like that one. having built half a dozen 10K + rigs on horrible deadlines I do feel your pain. Speaking of pain--I spent the whole day yesterday moving a 1,200 pound 120 watt laser into my new shop. I couldn't get it in the door with the fork lift so I had to stand out on the street for 5 hours in South Texas sun dismantling it. I had guys (mussel) standing around so I had to hustle and ended up just cutting about 30 or so wires...God help me today getting it all back together. Cyber I going to pm you, but I figure I'd post it in here.
I want to take out my v2000 motherboard tray.
It seems that the tray is also attached with the IO to the case with rivets.
Can you tell me, behind the motherboard tray, if there are rivets that are attached to the top of the motherboard.
I can see them by the io ports, at the lower portion of the back motherboard (2-3 rivets).. but the on the top it's hard to tell which ones are actually attached to the motherboard tray.

Wow, I can't get over how much stuff is, neatly, packed in there! Lol at your visual/ spacial savantness comment. I swear my dad had that same ability - could pack a room's worth of stuff into a single box, to everyone's amazement. (Alas, some traits aren't passed down.)

I find the price a bit surprising too, surprisingly inexpensive.

I have a pre-build and awhile ago did a lot of window shopping at at Voodoo, Falcon Northwest, Alienware, Smooth Creations, Digital Storm. (Finally settled on Fatty Bob's Lakeside Bait & PC Stop) There is no freaking way in freaking hell that someone could get anything even close to this rig for $9K at any of those places. No way, no how!

I just wish I woulda stumbled onto this site before stumbling onto Fatty Bob's.

Take a break and play some L4D CD =)
I'm gonna got shoot some stuff instead..gotta Razer Copperhead that's acting up.

It's attached. Just drill them all...any that aren't the right ones just put in more rivets :D

I know it's a common thing in every trade. Unless you price yourself ridiculously high like a pro no one really can believe you are a pro. I never had any trouble doing that when I was working on yachts...I'd just slam them with a ridiculous figure and they'd take it or not...but when I am dealing with a lot of younger guys on the Forums that are not that well off I have a hard time slamming them with real shop rates. I also spend wayyyyyy too long fussing with details. Even in my trade as a carpenter I was always taking about three times longer than anybody else because I was fretting over 64ths and grain patterns and so on...which is fine when you are getting paid hourly and the client is still happy...but not so good when you are working on set fees.

One thing I adhere to is that a man's work is a self portrait...I could go faster and sloppier and probably satisfy 90% of my clients as they might not see what I see...but it's those 10% that would run my name into the mud:shakes: And a man's reputation is really all he owns.

But enough about moi

I have been commissioned by the Owner to build an ATA case for the rig and I went all out on the design and ordering. All the parts will be arriving in about a week...ten days so I'll continue this log with more shots of that little project at that time.

It's going to be a nice shipping case.

Sort of like a large padded suitcase.

31" x 31" x 14".

Black ABS laminated to 3/8" ply

Aluminum Extrusions Joining all the panels

Tounge and Groove Extrusion sealing and align the two halves

Corner Balls

Tilting Corner Casters for easy transport

Spring Loaded Handles to facilitate shipping and handling

Recessed Butterfly latches with padlock Hasps

And a Pair of 4- wheel combination TSA locks

The Interior gets lined in 3" of Convoluted EVA foam (1.2lb density)

Should make for an interesting day or two out in the shop.:)

Yeah we spent about a week researching custom built cases and they are all pretty damn expensive. I am going to try and save him a little bread and get a little more satisfaction for the final days of this build :D A box I can make...no SW involved...no wiring...yes...might even be relaxing.

My personal advice is, keep on keeping on! Stick with all the guts you have and just do it!! I’ve found out that you have to be with the program or don’t do it at all. Bottom line is lets all be friends,,, friends are hard to come by. This is a fact!!!

Trust me I already know that this case is not to everyone's taste :p:

It's certainly not to my taste. My case is black on the outside and red on the inside and has no lights, no window.

But I still put everything I had to give into building my client exactly what he wanted.

It's a berserk looking PC...wires and tubes and lights everywhere....but it works great. I enjoyed the challenge.

If we all liked the same things wouldn't that be boring? This case was made to suit one person's taste and desires. If you do not like it fine, just move along. Too often we forget that we should be polite when commenting on someone else's work. The build quality is excellent and you can't argue that the pieces parts are not top notch also. Can you imagine the skill and planning involved in putting 20 pounds of technology in a five pound box?

I don't like looking at the case either, the color scheme atm just doesn't appeal to me. Though I must add what I like and not like changes with how I feel allot.

What I do like, is reading about the time, effort and eye for details and possibilities it took to shove all that stuff in there and make it look as good as it does, per specification of his costumer. It's even more admirable to look at someone who can build something on order/specification when the build is not something he would envision for himself. If you can satisfy a customer with a product you don't really feel in touch with, that's the highest level of craftsmanship imho.

And what's with the insults Seba? As you can read I don't like it either, but can see the attention it took to put it together. Or should I say, I'm very aware I would probably end up with something looking 100 times wurse when given the same stuff and even a year time to assemble it. So while you can not like the results, atleast credit him with that :)

zlojack
11-22-2008, 05:16 PM
There is much to admire about the build.

The workmanship. The quality. The attention to detail. The dedication.

It may not be to one's taste, but to insult the guy who made this to the exact spec of his client and did a damn fine job of it is just plain classless and low.

I know a troll when I read one...lol. And having posted a number of my other builds I don't really feel the need to defend myself. Quite the opposite. Those who have the eye to see and have done their own work have a notion of what is involved. I am not pleased with having masses and masses of cables everywhere. But the reality of it is that there is no place to hide them :D The V2000 presents a number of challenges to cable management by being so narrow. The typical modder "hide out" of running cabling on the back of the motherboard is not practical. And considering this is exacly the opposite of a "MurderBox" type sanitary build you are going too see a lot of the cables. Not all of them...but a lot.

I think if I had the patience to take the rig completely apart knowing the end of the road as I do now I could likely retrace my steps and have a more sanitary re-installation. The issue is time. This hardware is not bleeding edge tech. If I were to spend another month or two painting the chapel ceiling I might gratify my own ego, but I feel I would be doing my client a dis-service by handing him a rig that's even "older" than it is now.

At the moment this is a 4ghz 25K 3DMark 06 rig...that's still pretty potent even with the amazing Ci7 Futuremark destoyers setting a new bar. I'd like the owner to start enjoying that right away.

Gentlemen;
First of all everyone has a certain taste that appeals to them.
If this isn't yours thats fine but no need to blast CD because you don't like it.
Yes, it is busy in that case but there is a reason for it.
It IS the case the person who is paying the bill wants.
Then have you ever tried working this much equipment into this case?
I have and it sucks the big one to work with.
Ask CD about the phone calls I've made ot him for ideas on this case as to how in God's name to fit it all in.
Yea, beautiful case from the outside but the inside layout was never designed for water cooling in anything but the most simple of systems.

Now to the Polish gentleman that posted in this thread.
Please refrain from bashing people as that gets us nothing.
Perhaps you would have a suggestion that could help or show us your work with this case and that we would appreciate but in this situation you made a few mistakes.
First Cyberdruid is a very respected member here whose talents shown over a great many builds speak to his abilities.
Second, read above and let it sink in.
Third: One doesn't need to post in any thread. If the subject of the thread is something you don't like just ignore it and find the threads that you do like.

holy acrylic. i can't even imagine how you managed to do those louvers, and then you scrapped them?!? they looked f'ing awesome man! I'm amazed at the clean cuts having tried to work acrylic myself (and the metal as well). i can see how you poured 500 hours into that, easy. but you did yourself proud, the craftsmanship is evident in every little piece. the pump placement was genius, as were the double rad bracketry and how has no one mentioned the cut-out cold fusion text?! fantastic man! it was like watching a bob ross painting come together: at first you worry that it's not going to come out right and you're sure the artist messed it up and then all of the sudden the finished piece comes out and you sit there in astonishment.

the vision, the execution, the ingenuity and the finished product are mind blowing, IMO. and anyone complaining about the colors is clearly blind, blind to the rest of the build as well as the business of building something for another person. seriously man, I applaud your work. They guys working on the boat raided that thing the minute I left after installing it. The electrician got so drunk on the Chivas that he fell off the dock and lost his phone. We didn't hear from him for about 5 days.

nice! i like the freight case, cant wait to see how you manage to cut the foam.
i have a custom case for my turntables, modular really (via foam) but i can never
cut it nice enough. generally because 1. my knife is never long enough (need
something like 6" long) 2. when i do cut nice it its never straight (not like a straight
line but if you view from the front the cut is not perpendicular with the top.)
you should make a tag for it a rivet it on, that would be awesome.

I was thinking about rivetting on a maker's mark. Thanks

A Hot wire is really the way to go...but in a pinch an electric carving knife will do.

I plan to put a 45 degree bevel on the edes so I'll make a jig for that to guide the cut. Damn foam is so expensive I don't want to try freehanding anything.

My apologies if I missed it, but where did you get the extrusions from?

Oh, and awesome work btw (as usual).

I found the extrusions at two different Online sources. Starcase is expensive but they have a nice selection of gear. What killed me was the $80 shipping fee their online cart calculated. I felt like they were raping me.

I ordered from Reliable Hardware and the prices were better and the shipping was about $39 for the same order. They also have some stuff that might be of interest to you like colored ABS Laminates (probably very similar to the stuff on Drum Kits) and nice case feet.

Are you going to make PC trunk? :D

CyberDruid ... Finally got a reliable internet connection so was able to check out all your photos of this build and the shipping case as well. It really is awesome. I can't imagine how long it took you to do all the detailed work, and to fit everything into the case. That's talent. Always enjoy your builds, and I'm sure your client is going to be thrilled.

Nice work on the boat, too. We had some custom work done on our boat, and I can't believe how expensive it was - they charged us more for the TV mount than the TV cost! (Didn't know enough at that time to look for alternatives to the boat yard that was doing the original prep work).

How I end up doing these things is really off my radar. But I like it :D

I have the case pretty much ready for foam.

I searched for several days. I got three quotes for custom built cases and they all were in the $500 range with 2" foam.

I decided to make it myself.

Still waiting for foam to arrive.

Thanks guys

After ten hours in 30F weather I am taking it easy today. Rounding up all the bits and bobs to send along when I ship the case and making sure I have not forgotten anything.

I am floored. To say you are talented or skilled would seem to be a gross understatement to me. :bows: I do have question the tastes of your customer, unless he turns out to be wanting this machine to go into the DJ's booth at a club of some kind and wants to show off the PC controlling the club's lighting and music with some serious matching bling.

God, I wish I had discovered the work shop at my high school sooner than my senior year. I could have so gotten into this kind of stuff. They even had a foundery for doing metal casting.

I would add Coolmeister to that list of people I'd like to see you hookup with and see what kind of just cool things ya'll could produce. I have no doubt it would be amazing. :yepp:

Your definitly gonna be an inspiration for when I can finally do something more for myself than dream.:up::up:
