For those of you who remember me... IM BACK!

hehe...

Anyway if any of you remember (probably not) I was having tons of problems with my Striker. Well after a year and then moving I got fed up... I built a new computer and enjoyed it while my system sat in a corner for about 5 months.

Anyway I decided to give that computer to my dad for his birthday so I started working on mine again in preperation... long story short Striker Extreme pissed me off to no end (and local store gave me hassle on replacing it) I bought a tech station thing from NCIX for $80 (pics to follow) and a Maximus Formula and put all my stuff on that with an Ultra 120 Extreme Cooling it. hotflashed the Striker Extreme so it wouldn't post, made the store replace it, and is now sitting in my closet collecting dust... I have some plans for it later...

Anyway been running solid since february but I am moving again and havent had my water loop running the entire time living in this place (year and a half) so I have made it my goal to get it back up and running before I move. So that is what this thread is for... the showcase the Rehabilitation of Project Yin!

For my old worklog (my better one was on hardwareasylum which is no more):

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1126122

And for my previous post here with some pics as well:

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=151537

Hosting site is down for the next little bit as they are moving servers but should be back up in the next couple of hours...

Fow now my revisions to the project include new WB (even though I already have new mounting and nozzles for my Fuzion V1... sigh), replacing most of the fans (I grew out of the LED fad and my techstation's silence has spoiled me...), and new liquid (again even though i have all this pentosin and pt nuke laying around now...)

Stay tuned! I hope you enjoy as much as I am! :D

Edit:

Picture hosting back online...

My computer as it is now and has been since february...

Also had the thermal right mosfet sinks on it just cant see them in the pic... BTW the IFX 14 SUCKS... I have it for sale if anyone is interested though hehe.

OK stuff is happening!

Loop removed from case:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0016sfq3

Case all gutted:

Melvin pipe installed in res:

Clean loop:

crappy pic of res:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/00170ckt

Coolermaster led fans replaced with Scythe Kama Flex for silent operation:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/00171t2r
http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/001752q0

Wire slot extended to support more mobo's (some mobos have higher 24pin connectors then the striker did... my maximus is one of them):

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/001728h5

Im getting good at sleeving :D

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/00173d94
http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/001749wf

New Scythe S-Flex F rad fans sleaved and modded:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/00176q6a

Rad and fans cleaned up and installed and testing:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/001773d9

I am quite surprised with the performance of the Scythe fans on this rad. By themselves they are pushing quite a bit of airflow through (quite a bit more then my logisys red led fans and are quieter too!). Like I knew they were good but... ;D

It would require too much work to rewire it now but if I do this again I am going to put all S-Flex F in push pull with a 12v/7v mod like I have on the panaflo's. I am sure I would get very similar performance to what I am getting wtih those panaflo's at 7v like i have them most of the time (12v is just to loud and doesn't improve temps enough to warrant... well we will see once I get this running again as I have changed quite a bit since last time).

Where did the skull fan grills come from? Those are awesome enough to put into my next build.

And those scythe fans: I have a full set on my PA120.3, yes, they're awesome. They move air and they're almost silent at 12v.

I can't remember for the life of me where I got those grills... they are awesome though. I had some different ones on a previous build but they stuck out past the edge of the fans and were very limiting in where I could place them. Probably got them from here www.ncix.com or www.performance-pcs.com as those two places are where I order the majority of my stuff.

And a lot of people wouldn't consider these fans silent but they are quiet enough for me :D and I find that putting fans in push/pull reduces the air turbulence noise quite a bit. Like when I just have my panaflo's on 7v you can hear a lot of air "whoosing" through the top of the rad. Turn on the Scythes and you hear almost no air.

From day one I have always named the computer Yin in windows so it just stuck... and I kinda have a plan to start another project Yang as my server...

Grr... some idiot parked in my spot making me wait an hour in my car last night and then proceded to have a :banana::banana::banana::banana: fest for 20 min afterwards with me (his brother and grandfather joined in for some reason) when I pay to park in that spot... grr...

I was alrady working late and after that fiasco I was too upset to start working on the comp... so no progress last night unfortuneatly. Hopefully tonight I can get lots done. Would like to see the loop in the case and filled/bleeding before I go to bed.

OK just got back to this last night finally... I am almost done. Just need to make my new HD power cables and put it all together...

Swapped out side case fan:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/00178bdx
http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/00179yaz

Swapped out my cathodes for some A.C. Ryan ones (much better ):

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017ak8e
http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017bxp2

Redid some wiring, cleaned, new heatshrink on the relay cable:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017chhx

Loop installed:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017d123
http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017e4zx
http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017f3tc

And I have it filled and bleeding as I type this.

Couple things im disspointed with. First the coolermaster fans I had in here were nicer then I thought. Side by side comparisons (The coolermasters to the Scythe) they are all subjectively the same output and same noise with the coolermaster having just a slight motor "hum". So ive gained longer life bearings and lost the bling (i was sick of the blue led...).

Second my top rad fans I love the new look of the Black Scythe and my black mesh but the annoying sound is still there. For some reason the second I attach my rad plate to the the fans they start making this very annoying sound (actually im not sure if its just the plate or when its installed into the case). I am going to have to make a recording of it and post it so someone can help me figure this out. Next time I take it apart I am going to try putting a gasket between the plate and fans to give more room.

And the D-Tek Fuzion V2 I got. Decided to get this after seeing how stained my V1 was and to simplify installing nozzles and such and the slightly wider barbs makes clamp installation sooo much easier vs the V1. Though now reading around and looking at the EK Supreme (and the fact it was on sale for $15 cheaper then my Fuzion V2 at the time of purchase) I can't help but feel I should have got it. Oh well. It's what. 1-2°C at best? lol.

So overall not a whole lot of improvement anywhere other then looks through all this.

OK... it is more or less done now. Just a couple minor details to sort out but am waiting for parts now.

My new sata power cable:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017geqs

New sata power cable and new left angle sata cable for the cd-rom:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017hcf6

The startings of my PCI-E cables:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017kh34

Everything wired up (sorry for crappy pics the batteries died in my good flash):

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017pctx

Now you may be wondering why I moved the HD like that and changed out my sata cable for the CD-ROM... well the next pic you will know why...

And I am sure you can guess my plans for the PCI-E cables... need more sleeving...

Anyway... time for the money shot:

http://pics.livejournal.com/bun_bun/pic/0017qwye

And there you have it! PCI-E cables need to be finished and I need to replace my side fan... I somehow fried it. not sure how. I think I might have plugged it in wrong to the fan header or something... either way my fan headers are all fine with my other fan but my Scythe S-Flex E released the magic smoke (and man did it stink!)

Now I just need to figure out why my fans on top make such an awful noise... if I cup my hands around the openings it stops so I know its airflow related...

EDIT: Oh! and performance... well I don't have the numbers with me but my load temps with just the panaflo's on 7v are 5°C cooler then my TRUE with a Scythe S-Flex F and with the top fans on (which is basically same performance as panaflo's on 12v) my temps are 10°C cooler then the TRUE. But my NB temps are up 12°C so im hopeing when I replace my side fan that will come back down.

Water temp in the res (after WB) is 1°C above ambient on idle and 3-4°C above ambient on load.

Delta 72mm Dual blade fans ~220CFM one of them has broken blades though (accidentally sucked up my shirt when I was showing someone...)

WOOOOOOOOOOOO Rampage Formula FTW!!! Dayam I love mine.... Great build

Thanks! Except its a Maximus Formula ;) basically same board though...

And Performance-PC's sent me the wrong sleeving so a little longer before I can finish my PCI-E cables... replacement side fan will be here today and then I can hopefully drop my NB temps (last night they hit 49°C where as when on the tech station my NB maxed out at 31-35°C.)

Yea same with my Striker board, currently going through a 2nd RMA. I'm just going to make it my secondary computer with all air.

Aside from that nice build, clean and simple. What case are you using? I like those switches in front of the case, what are you using those for?

NB temps never went above 28°C lol

The case is a Lian Li PC-6077B. I dont think you can get them any more. The switches are from performance-pcs. From left to right 1. on/off cathodes and led in res 2. on/off led's in front 3. coil on DPST relay for 12v/7v on panaflo's (see my previous worklog for details about the relay) 4. on/off top fans on rad.

Yea that looks pretty cool, city of Hong Kong or something :p:, but good work on the switches.

Ok so recently I helped a friend make his computer silent... I was jealous of the result. So I dove back into my liquid cooling build.

After tearing it apart and doing some playing around with things I discovered that the close proximity of the fan blades to the modders mesh was creating some air turbulence noise. So I picked up some cheap plastic air filter grille's and cut out the grilled part and used them as spacers to get the fans away from the mesh. On top of that I discovered Scythe Gentle Typhoon fans. Bought a couple to try them out and loved them so much I replaced all my 120mm with them. Just the fans themselves the mesh doesn't make that much noise and with the spacer there is zero turbulence noise from before. My S-Flex fans still had a slight hum with the spacers.

I could only find the 1850 rpm variant of the Gentle Typhoon so I used some resistors I had laying around to slow them down. The top fans I used 56 ohm resistors and the side panel fan I used a 68 ohm resistor.

I also drained and cleaned the loop and changed from the UV black to UV clear/blue coolant. Tried to finish my PCI-E cables as well but ran out of sleaving. Scared myself with the PCI-E cables because my 8 pin just has jumper wires going from the other pins and the pins that had two wires werent crimped well and pulled off the pin with it still in the connector. Had a hell of a time getting it out but once I did I straighted it, soldered the wires on and then crimped it. All good now just need some more sleeving.

Oh... and added a fan that rests on the video card and blows on the NB heatsink as the NB was just running too hot for my likeing... and I had these yateloon 20mm thick fans laying around...

Any... pics!

Once I have some more time I will try and get some better pics of the UV and res... was too lazy to go get my tripod.

All said and done I cant tell when the top fans are on or off now and when the bottom fans are on 7v its pretty dang quiet now. Funny thing is... It's about the same performance as what I had before with just the panaflo's on 7v and its quieter... so I think I have finally accomplished my goal. Yes I dont have the crazy 12v panaflo action going on (which does get me about 2-4°C better CPU temp over my best temp now) but I never would actually sit next to this thing with them on 12v so it was useless. However the bottoms fans only at 7v (top fans off) is not enough for this ran. Water temps quickly climbs to 15°C above ambient and CPU temps are worse then my Ultra-120 with a S-Flex F.

Here is a quick comparison of before and after for performance...

Panaflo's adn Scythe S-Flex all on 12v

IDLE/LOAD
Ambient: 22.2°C
Core0: 00°C/49°C
Core1: 00°C/49°C
Core2: 00°C/47°C
Core3: 00°C/47°C
Water: 00°C/24°C
NB: 00°C/39°C (w/o fan)
SB: 00°C/35°C

Panflo's 7v and Scythe off

IDLE/LOAD
Ambient: 23.3°C
Core0: 00°C/56°C
Core1: 00°C/56°C
Core2: 00°C/54°C
Core3: 00°C/54°C
Water: 00°C/29°C
NB: 00°C/39°C (with fan w/o fan 49°C)
SB: 00°C/39°C

Gentle Typhoons bottom 12v top 8.95v

IDLE/LOAD
Ambient: 22.7°C
Core0: 00°C/51°C
Core1: 00°C/51°C
Core2: 00°C/49°C
Core3: 00°C/49°C
Water: 00°C/27°C
NB: 00°C/37°C (with fan w/o fan 49°C)
SB: 00°C/39°C

Gentle Typhoons bottom 7v top 8.95v

IDLE/LOAD
Ambient: 23.0°C
Core0: 00°C/54°C
Core1: 00°C/54°C
Core2: 00°C/51°C
Core3: 00°C/51°C
Water: 00°C/28°C
NB: 00°C/39°C (with fan w/o fan 49°C)
SB: 00°C/41°C

So as you can see both after situations provide me with better temps then just the panaflo's at 7v and quieter at the same time. Turn off the top fans with the GT at 7v tho and the temps go above 60°C. What surprises me however is the within 3°C performance with the GT's going max of the panaflos at 12v... I am definitly a fan now of push/pull setups with slower fans then just a set of high flow fans. The only real downfall to not having the panaflos in there at 12v... they created a lot of turbulence in the case and everythind stayed that much cooler. However I would never actually use it like that so its a moot point really.

So yeah. I'm happy now. Next on my list is a nicer reservoir.

Looking better then every man, can't wait to see it in person again. I'm not necessarily a huge fan of the single wire sleeving but it's all about personal preference.

Probably gonna be pickin' your brain quite a bit now that I've got access to all this machining equipment and a CNC Mill at work. ;)

Thanks man. And yes feel free to pic my brain. I can CAD up anything you want as well.

Can't wait to install the Intel X25-M tonight!
