Project: Fortress Under Water

Hey everyone, I am a new member to the forum here but have been browsing and looking at a lot of information for a while now. After looking at some sick logs for water cooling set ups, I decided I'm gonna start my own project :). Right now I am running an a water cooling set up but only a CPU loop with okay parts (was a big noob when i did it ). Now I have done a lot of research and am ready to step up to the "big leagues" of water cooling.

My current set up:
Antec P182
EVGA 780i SLI FTW
Intel C2Q 9450
Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066 4gb
EVGA GTX 280
Silverstone Tek Strider 750w Modular PSU
Hitachi 1TB 7200rpm 32mb cache HDD
Danger Den MC-TDX Water block
Feser X-Changer 240 Radiator
ClearFlex 1/2ID 3/4OD Tubing
XSPC 5.25 Bay Res/Pump (takes 2 slots)
Feser Black/UV Blue Coolant

This has been a solid computer for a long time now and I am ready to upgrade. Sadly I don't have a ton of time to do mods to my computer since I am a college student, and I work after school. Usually during weekends, and breaks for school and work do I have the time to get my mods going on my computer. My current mod will take place during my winter break from school and I plan to take a week off from work to dedicate most of my time to this mod so that it is not rushed and everything will turn out the way that i want. I have all of the new parts ordered, and I already have the new case and the coolant that I am going to be using for this new water cooling set up. All my other parts will be here tomorrow (gotta pick it up from FedEx hub) but I will not be able to open them till Christmas since they are considered a gift even though I picked everything out . Good thing I don't like surprises much :D.

Parts I already have here:
Silverstone Tek Fortress FT01B-W Mid Size Case
Swiftech MC655B Pump
DangerDen Fill port
Arctic Silver Ceramique Thermal Paste
Fluid XP EXT+ Extreme Performance Coolant - Blood Red (2x32oz Bottles)

Parts on the way (from FrozenCPU and Petras Tech Shop):
Feser X-Changer 360 Radiator
D-Tek FuZion v2 Waterblock w/ Quad Core Insert
DangerDen Tieton GTX280 Waterblock
Swiftech Micro-Res v1
Noctua NF-P12 Fans (3 for Radiator)
XSPC Radiator Mounting Brackets
Masterkleer 7/16ID 5/8OD Tubing (12ft just in case :D)
EK High Flow 1/2OD Fittings (12)

Considering that I am using 7/16ID tubing on 1/2OD fittings, I am not going to using clamps, instead using red zip ties. I know it will be a VERY tight fit and once it is on, its on, but better to be safe then sorry. Im looking forward to this mod and I am already excited to get this going but i got to wait more than a month just to get everything in my hands to start :(. The only thing that I need to do before hand, and can work on before is prepping the case (punching a hole in the top for the DangerDen fillport) and getting wires sleeved if needed.

If anyone has some advice it would be greatly appreciated since this will be my fist computer with a GPU and CPU water cooling that is completely custom. Should be a fun experience.

I am considering getting a 5.25 drive bay fan controller. I like the Scythe Kaze Master 5.25 the only issue that I think I would have is that I would be using this for the 3 fans on the radiator, and the fan on the back of the case for exhaust and not 100% sure if the wires for the thermal sensors would reach all that way.

If it displays zero for that I wouldn't really care, just a thought. Anyone have some experience with this type of thing?

Cutless009
11-13-2008, 01:01 PM
The wires are each 2' 4", cut a piece of string and find out if they will reach, considering the extra length added by the tail on the fan Id say they would.

*edit* and yes thats the ACTUAL length, I just measured one of the cables I had sitting here that I am sleeving.

PsYcHoNo0b727
11-13-2008, 05:16 PM
Guess ill give that a try. Even if the thermal sensor wires don't reach, I can just use it without the thermal sensors and use it primarily as a fan controller. Just out of curiosity, what size sleeving and heat shrink is needed for the Scythe Kaze, I was thinking 1/4" but I could be wrong... would be my first Sleeving job lol.

Thanks.

I think it'll be fine. You just need to make sure you securely mound everything and make sure to thoroughly think out the tubing. You've done fine on the original computer, though, so you've got nothing to worry about :)

I got industrial strength zip ties holding that thing on there :D so im pretty sure it isn't going anywhere. As far as changing the case, my new FT01 will still have an external rad, but i got steel mounting brackets this time so I deff will be secure :).

I am actually now considering using the current 2x120 Feser and pump/res combo so that i can cool the NB/SB and possibly MOSFETS on the chip set. Ill have 2 loops set up which would be pretty good since then my whole computer will be water cooled. Just need to find a place to put the 2x120mm rad since the spot in the back will be used for the 3x120. My toughts are putting it on the top and modding the top of the case so that i can 2 holes for water cooling and the hole for the fill port for the CPU/GPU loop. Possibly add another fillport for the NB/SB loop.

Still under consideration, any suggestions on that would be good :D. Right now I am considering the Danger Den 780i NB and 780i SB water blocks or EK 780i NB/SB water blocks w/ 3/8" fittings and tubing. Can't find mosfet coolers for the 780i, maybe ill keep those passive for now.

My other option is mount a 1x120mm inside the case and use that for cooling. If i can i would wanna avoid that since i already have a 2x120 good radiator so why waste it? Unless i do plan to use that in another computer which is deff a possibility :).

After researching and pricing out parts... It wouldn't be overall a good "bang for buck" situation with my mobo and parts needed to do a NB/SB cooling.

I am going to stick w/ the CPU/GPU set up for now... when i upgrade my mobo i will reconsider it.

Parts from FrozenCPU came today :D. Sadly can't use em until Christmas but i did look inside and made sure everything was in there and exactly what i ordered. Was suppose to be here yesterday... but the damn FedEx guy didn't ring the doorbell and claimed that no one was home .

O well.

I can mess around w/ the case, pump and coolant since that's all from my money :D the other stuff i couldn't open so I can't take good pics :( but I will throw up some pics tonight to give everyone a better idea of what i got to work with.

So when I went down to my local MicroCenter today, they only had one Scythe Kaze bay there, and it was open with the box looking like it went through WWII. Plus, they didn't have any black sleeving.... I ended up picking up FeserOne Blue UV coolant since I looked at it under a UV light and I loved the look of it and considering that I have UV lights in my case now, why not use em again? I also picked up Blue Light kits to make the coolers even better ;).

I am prolly going to order the Scythe Kaze bay controller online this week at some point in time.

Here is what I got at microcenter :)

I ordered a black sleeving kit from Xoxide.com along with a PCI slot adapter for 3 moltex connectors. Will take more pics when they come. I plan to use the sleeving kit for the MC655-B pump wires, and the fan 3pin to moltex adpter wires so they look neat and clean. Hopefully they wont come out bad since it will be my first sleeving job :help:

Here are some pics of the Silverstone Fortress FT01B-W in depth. Its a pretty awesome case once you open it up and go through its guts.

Overall look of the case... I think it looks simple yet nice.

Top look of the case. You can see the top 180mm fan vent and the top I/O panel for USB/Audio/Firewire

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e133/Psychonewb/Watercooling%20Work%20Log/IMG_0328.jpg

This is where i plan to mount the pump. Seems like a good spot. Im going to either screw it into place, or use double stick velcro to stick it on in that spot.

Pic of the fan filter in the front of the case for the intake 180mm fan, its totally removable and able to be cleaned easier.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e133/Psychonewb/Watercooling%20Work%20Log/IMG_0333.jpg

I know this is a dark pic and kinda hard to see but this is where i plan to mount my Swiftech micro res. You can see the brackets on the back screwed in on the grate part its an approximate but thats the general area of where the res will go.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e133/Psychonewb/Watercooling%20Work%20Log/IMG_0337.jpg

The top IO panel is the only problem I have w/ the case. For a silverstone is does look cheap. For the sound padding I am considering swapping it for a better quality one... always a consideration to go to Home Depot and get some :D. Aside from that, for a mid size case i think its pretty solid contruction, and has great features. Since I got it for $209 on newegg plus a $30 mail in rebate, I got a pretty good deal if you ask me.

It really sucks that I can't use compression fittings on my D-Tek FuZion V2. O well, guess I will have to use regular fittings

Question?

This is going to my loop set up. Tell me if this makes sense or if I should change the pattern

Rad Output (Coldest Liquid) > CPU Block > GPU Block > Res > Pump > Rad Input (Hottest Liquid)

In between the pump and rad input is where the connection for the fill port will be.

Yea thats what i found out when I posted in the Liquid Cooling page.

Rad > CPU Block > Fill port connection (using Y-Fitting) > GPU Block > Res > Pump > Rad

Yay, glad to see I'm not the only one who uses Y-fitting for filling:D It actually is better choise than T in some parts of the loop. Altough I usually use res/fillport right before the pump inlet, but your loop order has it in quite unusual place. I assume you just placed it in the highest point because your pump is on the bottom?

And don't get me wrong, besides those two things I stated before I really like that case too.:yepp:

Im still picking where I wanna put the Y-Fitting... It is possible I can use it in between the Res and Pump. Only reason I put it right after the CPU was so I could minimize the use of tubing but since I got 12ft of the stuff ill have plenty to spare :D.

So this loop pattern would better then:
Rad > CPU Block > GPU Block > Res > Y - Fitting Fill Port > Pump > Rad

Lagaaja
11-19-2008, 07:26 AM
Well, the big question is that why would you like to use both (the res and the y-line)?

And where are you going to put the res? Because one option would be that you route tubing from the top of the res straight up to fillport that's on the top of the case.

EDIT: This is how I currently have my y-line and the same pump that you're going to use. Altough this configuration will change as soon as my new case gets here from Germany and I can start new build:D

And where are you going to put the res? Because one option would be that you route tubing from the top of the res straight up to fillport that's on the top of the case.

I was thinking about doing that too. Right now my idea was to mount it on the grate surface on the back next to the the PCI slots but I was thinking that could cause a problem since the GPU block would be right next to it and cause the tubing to bent a little to much for my comfort. I could mount the tubing that way to the fillport, im sure I can find a spot to mount it that way, might be easier to do it that way.

I just checked and I can't fit a G1/4 fitting into the top port of the Swiftech MicroRes V1. I think I would need to get either the V2 or buy the EK Multiport Res which is what I might do. I could use the V1 in a different set up later on considering I am saving money for a totally new Core i7/Crossfire rig that will be dual loop.

Okay, well I guess you can allways ouse some rotary 45's or 90's.

Anyway see my edited post (and the pic) :)

I think that I am going to order the Swiftech MicroRes V2. It has a top, bottom and 2 side ports for filling and its only $23. Im sure I will use the other res in another build. Plus, the opening on the bottom will be better for water going to the pump and the top port for the fill port.

Edit: Actually ordered the EK Tube Reservoir 150 w/ the Anti-Cyclone piece. That way I can mount it better on the top part of the case and connect it to the fill port using minimal tubing.

Woot for short week coming up. Tomorrow me and my buddy will be doing some case modding. Punching a hole in the top of the case for the Dager Den fill port and possibly a couple other mods ;).

Monday I will get my EK Multi-Port 150 Res v2.

CASE MOD 1 complete WOOT lol.

Punched a hole in the top of the case for my DD Fill Port and Spray painted the nut for the fill port black to make everything the same color. My next mod will prolly be a hole in the back of the mobo try for my 8pin ATX wire since the space were is would come out for the socket has the 180mm fan in way. Im gonna measure it with my old 680i board and then drill a hole from there.

I will take pics of the case tomorrow.

Update 11/23

As promised here are the pics of my "mod" for putting a hole in the top of the case for my DD fill port. Me and a buddy of mine used slugs to punch a hole in the top of the case which proved to be slightly harder than we thought since the top of the case was thicker than most cases ive seen. I didn't measure exactly but if i were to guess it was about 1/4 of an inch thick and using a slug on that was tough to punch the hole lol.

Here is what the hole looks like on the top of the case. As you can see it is a little thick but not really good image for looking at depth.

We also spray painted the plug for the fillport black to make it look better when mounted in the case

Update 11/24

Well my EK-Multioption RES 150 Rev 2 came today along w/ a laser UV light from performance-pcs but the Anti-Cyclone piece was broken inside the packaging . Good thing that I still gotta wait to put this whole thing together.

I already sent the RMA department and email. Just waiting to here back.

Made an order from Petra's Tech Shop. First I gotta say that store is great :). I ordered another EK Anti-Cyclone piece since Performance-PCs claimed its impossible for it to break during transit. O well, its only a $3.50 piece and I needed to order stuff from Petra's anyway. I am going to be using blue zip ties for clamps on the tubing so I ordered 20 blue 4" zip ties, and Danger Den Male-Male fitting (http://www.petrastechshop.com/dadenmatomag.html) for connecting my fillport to the top of the EK reservoir.

Hopefully it will work as I think.

Update 11/25

I bought a mod part to the pump. I know Koolance doesn't have a great rep around here but this mod part is just what I was looking for.

Koolance G1/4" Threaded Acetal Pump Base (http://www.frozencpu.com/products/8151/ex-pmp-71/Koolance_G14_Threaded_Acetal_Pump_Base_for_PMP-450_MCP655_COV-PMP450A.html?id=wrMYT2RY&mv_pc=671)

This will allow me to use the top port as a inlet, and the side port as an outlet which would make my water cooling set up look much less cluttered and less tubing running around inside the case.

When i got home from the gym i decided to sleeve all of the internal cables of the case instead of just the fans. I sleeved the mother board headers, those where the only remaining wires that did not come sleeved. Anyway here are the pics :D

Stuff from petras FINALLY came today. Got my G1/4 Male-Male end, 20 Blue 4" Zip Ties, and EK Anti Cyclone piece. Anyway... here are some pics.

This is a shot that puts the pump under the res where I plan to mount it for the input to the pump to come right down from the Res. I have to mount the pump yet so that it will stay flat on the group. Think me and my friend might make a piece or find a way to mount it on the bottom of the case.

So I did some mods to my pump again. Decided to use the original base from the MC655-B pump and use it on w/ the new pump head. Had to do a little bending and what not to get it to fit right but I think it turned out alright :D

I am using double stick velcro to hold the pump onto the bottom of the case once it is mounted. This will prolly be temporary until I find a better solution to use.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e133/Psychonewb/Watercooling%20Work%20Log/IMG_0389.jpg

Also, now with that velcro on their, it is flat, the screws don't make it angle backwards which is a good thing.

With that res screwed in like that, you may want to do some testing with water inside, because water adds a lot of weight, and that little fillport may have too much strain on it to support the res permanently.

I seriously doubt he'd have any issues in that regard, I've seen this done before without issue, plus the maximum tensile strength on all of these parts is like 1,200lbs or some nonsense.

I thought about that too, but when I screwed the res in, it was pretty damn solid once screwed in pretty tight. And once the clamp for the fill port was screwed on tight as well, it wasn't going anywhere easily. I know the water, and movement caused by the pump will cause some strain, but I do plan to do testing before actually running my system.

I did read somewhere something like that, but still better be safe than sorry, dont wanna have an issue of my res breaking off and spilling all the liquid on my parts lol.

Update 12/3

My order from TigerDirect came today. Well more stuff I can't open till Christmas  but I did open all of the stuff to make sure it was exactly what I ordered. I checked out the PSU cables to make sure they would be long enough and I'm glad I did. I needed to order SATAII cables anyway, right angle black ones for my new build, so I added an 8pin 12v Extender to the order since the one that comes w/ the Ultra PSU was really short, not long enough to route behind the mobo tray. Also, ordered a 24pin extender to be on the safe side. It was cheap and if I don't use it, im sure Ill use it in the future.

I apologize for lack of updates on this so far... unfortunately there isn't really much else i can do to keep myself going until Christmas when I can actually use all of my new parts :(. I did get to open the Ultra X3 PSU and put it my case to check wire lengths and stuff like that. The 24pin mobo connector length is fine, the 8pin ATX connector is slightly to short the way i was routing it before in the opening right next the top fan(like literally 2cm ) so i have 2 options. 1 i can use an extender which I tried and it fits with plently of wire length remaing, 2 i can punch a small hole in the mobo tray and route the wire up that way, however i am not sure if that will help fix the lenght issue, and the the big fan on top might come a little too close to the mobo for the wire to pass through. I will have to put a different mobo in there just to test it I guess.

After doing a lot of consideration I decided to use clamps instead of zip ties on my tubing. Instead of using the plastic clamps, I wanted to use the Stanless Steel tubing clamps you can get at Home Depot. Bought 2 packs of 10 for $12 lol. Good deal if you ask me, and I know for sure that the tubing will be secure on the barbs. Also, pick up a cutting kit for my Dremel for when i need to do my cutting mods :p.

Got to mount it on the outside. You can prolly fit 2 or 3 single rads in there but unless u want to mod the case u can't fit 120.2 or 120.3 inside the case. Mine will be going outside the case right on the back.

Update 12/19

Decided to test out my new Dremel that I got so that I could mod the top 180mm fan so that I have the wire for my 8pin ATX cord be routed behind the fan for easier access to the port on the mobo.

I think its a pretty good Dremel job considering that I still consider myself a modding noob.

I also removed the SATA Hot-Swap connector from the case since I will not be using it, as well as I unplugged the USB/Audio/1394 mobo cables from the top I/O port since I never use those.... I have a USB Hub for the USB ports and where the computer is placed in my room, it would be a pain in the ass to constantly plug and unplug the USB stuff into the top USB ports. I also have a splitter for my headset/speakers in the back connected to my sound card so I don't need the audio ports in the front. I don't use firewire either, so no point to have that. This will help me have cleaner looking wire management.

Finally got the computer up and running back to what I need it to do :). Looks pretty sexy to me, the only thing that bothers me is the wires for the UV lights attached to the door but I need to find a way to make those less of a problem... a task for another day :p.

Well this morning im doing my Overclocking. GPU/CPU overclocking :).

The sad thing about this computer is that the NB fan on my 780i is louder than my Noctua fans on the radiator lol.

Overclocking and Benchmarking

Well here is the status of my Overclock/Benchmarking day. So far got my CPU to run stable at 3.60GHz and my GPU stable at 675/1453/1235. Ran 3Dmark06 and 3Dmark Vantage. Vantage almost crippled my video card  but 06 wasn't bad at all. Here are some pics.

CPUID Validation:

Good for you!:clap::up:

And those are some big pics, some resizing wouldn't hurt. Can we see a flash shot of the whole case? I'd like to see how it turned up overall:)

Yea sorry about the pic size... didn't think they were that big, i wanted only a small shot of it but some reason the hosting like gave me the big size  Ill fix em later, and i plan to take more pics too :D

Working on pics... uploading to ImageShak, photobucket is pissing me off lol.

Resize them with some good software and then upload. That way you'll get much nicer pics, not so blurry ones :)

Also got nice shiny new Samsung 24" Monitor yesterday at microcenter. Model is 2443BWX and I got it for $329 and there is a $30 mail in rebate. Not a bad deal for a Samsung.

Updated Benchmarking Results

After doing a lot of tweaking. Finally got my CPU/GPU/RAM to run stably.

CPU running at 3.6GHz (450x8)
RAM Linked/Synched at 900Mhz 5-5-5-15 2T
GPU running at 740/1575/2360

3DMark06: 17641

3DMark Vantage: P14893

I am working on a 3.7 clock for CPU and possibly 3.8 so I will be running benching if I get those up and running stable.

nice one man, looks sweeeeet
one thing though, if you can turn down the UV lights it will stop the liquid from going cloudy (that really pisses me off)
but yeah, nice :toast:

Thanks for the comments. Really was the best that I could do with the Mid-Size case. I would love to fit the 120.3 rad on the inside but I didn't wanna cut the case up just yet.

Possibly over the summer ;).
