What happens if you accidentally fill the pit...?

nothing, same thing. Some people just fill it so they can go over the pit cause if not you'll ground out.

you have to fill the pit with something non-conductive or you'll ground out in the pit.

Same as closing that 5th L3 normally, except above way you'd probably get a "direct ground" to reported sub-surface exposed ground plane...doing it the normal way by insulating trench first is safer cause that should ground the L3 thru a current limiting resistor.

But the "socket pins mod" which many users do now, also creates a "direct ground, so it can't be too risky.
