disabling startup programs on xp?

well i have just installed xp pro and i have installed most of my programs but they are coming out at the start up and i was wondering is there any way to get rid of them?
also in the bottom left corner i have a keyboard icon but it is not in the list of icons it is in a section of its own. well is there some way of getting rid of that?

go to "run" and type in "msconfig"

you can disable services and start up programs.
