Coolermaster CM 690 (silent mod)

Here are some pictures of my latest build. It's nothing special or fancy looking to be honest, but I didn't intend to build a uber PC in the first place. My primary goal was to build a very silent multimedia PC I can watch movies with and play some games without hearing whether it is running or not. I mainly used scrap parts that I had lying around for a while, so the hardware is a little outdated, but still good enough for its purpose.

Tubing ended up looking a little messy, but I had to make sure not to kinck it. Having 4 radiators surely is a bad idea for a clean appearance, but screw that =)

The fans only start spinning with a max of 50% as soon as the water temp hits 38C. Depending on the system load that happens every 15 to 45 minutes. I am trying to fine tune the pump's fan controller first, before I overclock the thing =)

awesome build bro! great stuff and went a completely different way then most ppl... I was thinking of picking up a few of those Scythe quite drives are they worth it? i might a raptor in one of em what you think is the best way to go with that? thanx for the CRAZY amount of pics awesome stuff

The only thing I'm not sure on is those passive rads on the outside... aluminum?? Scary thought... Looks cool though. I'd paint the metal in the front around the front fan black so it isn't as visible through the mesh :)

That is what I thought in the first place, but have a look at the following pictrue (reservoir). That was before I added the second external radiator and the Xchanger 120.

Flow has obviously getting lower with the additional radiators, but it seems to be good enough, still. The pump's rpm can be controller using the software and temperature wise I can't notice a difference between running at lowerst and full speed. CPU temp according to coretemp is 2 C higher than the water temperature measured by the pump.

I like the Quite Drive from Scythe. There is almost no noise at all and the HDD is barely noticable, but the case is still sending vibrations to the case, so I am going to unscrew it and put it on a pice of sponge. With the raptors, temperature could become a serious issue. With the 640Gb F1 I am using, I haven't seen a higher temperature than 39C, even after copying X-Plane 9 from my old HDD to this one (64 Gb), but the F1 doesn't get hot at all.

Yes, the external radiators are made out of alluminium, but I don't think that will cause any problems. I guess I will find out. I willpaint the front around the fan next time I am making any changes, though the silver metal is barely noticably when you don't use a flash =)

I actually don't like the look of it very much, but I didnt build it for looks in the first place. Form follows function :) Just wanted to have it as quiet as possible. The next project that I have scheduled for February next year will be better looking and high performance.

I didn't poay too much attention to the interior as there are no windows, but I am pretty satisfied with the end result.

To throw in some numbers: Without any fans running, water temperature is 40C with a room temperature of 23C at non heavy load (listeing to musig, surfing, etc). With Prime95 water temperature stays at 44.5C after half an hour of load and stayed there. I let it run 1 hour 45 minutes and water temp was still at 44.5C. That is at stock speed. I set the desired water temperature in the Aquasuite to 38C and I don't even notice when the fans start spinning. SO far, everything works as planned. Will be intresting to see if the cooling can keep up with more voltage.

Ye, the 3/8" compression fittings are really good looking and I like the tubing a lot considering most people in Germany use 10/8 mm tubing, which is what I used for like forever too, but they don't fit on some coolers. There used to be a time when I wouldn't touch new stuff at all, but this time I thought screw that and made them fit using brute force =)

I got some good ideas about a improved version of the concept which will be a lot better looking last night. Checking on the cost right now, but I think I am gonna go for it, just to see how it will turn out.

No it doesn't fit without any mod, the least you have to do is drilling 4 holes for the second fan, because the default hole dimensions are designed for 2 140mm fans next to each other, not 2 120mm fans. I also cut out the standard fan grill. I only have the pictures I posted, in the beginning I only took pics with the iPhone which is why they are that bad.

I really like the TFC tubing. Very flexible and the colors are great. I have them in all kind of colors and the hardest thing was to decide which one to take ;)
