so im thinking of grabbing a 45nm chip specificly the 9550 since its such a good price/performance point. so is it worth it what are the benefits etc and so on. or is it a push or not worth the effort etc. (yes i do plan to go to nehalem later but not till i can buy an extreme so i want a cpu that will last me a while till x58 and the neh's are more established.)
thanks in advance.

Whit E0 9550 you can do 4Ghz, But is 4Ghz worth of all that money wich you spend?

you did see the specs right ? :P idealy id like to get something that can hit 4+ for sure (obviously not for sure but ya know what i mean:p) and the money would be well spent imo

Well i saw Q6600 and 3,5Ghz! but after i read more i saw that you got proper cooling :D
Have you consired to buy Q9650 ? They clock pretty high !
As Q9550 Make sure to get E0 stepping, Whit water it could be around 4,2Ghz-4,3Ghz! Hard to say there is still pretty rarely these E0's

You have the right board, if you grab an E0 I'm sure you can do 4.1GHz maybe 4.2GHz , imo it would be worth the $$
I went from a 6700 to 9550 C1 and I can say it was worth it.
even at 3.9GHz it out performed the 6700 running 3.6GHz with much less heat

Grnfinger - Did you mean that even at 3.6GHz the Q9550 outperformed your Q6700 at 3.9GHz? I would hope that the Q9550 at 3.9GHz outperforms your Q6700 at 3.6GHz!!

why not go higher on the q6600..is it b3 or g0..g0 should do 3.8-4 well mine does under poor watercooling..

Ok. With the right cooling, you can overclock anything. Water can really only take you so far (not much farther than air, mostly just quieter). I had trouble getting past 3.6 when I had my setup. I couldn't even post if I tried 4.0ghz with my Q6600.
Now with phase Im stable at 4.3 and currently testing 4.5ghz

have you tried more volts with that quad? you could probably go farther.

Also, you would see more performance from getting a second geforce 280 gtx, than from a few hundred mhz on your proc. I would go for the upgrade that will give you the greatest FPS increase.
Putting anymore money into the dead skt 775 platform is just foolish at this point.

Yes, get the Q9550.. C1 or E0.. you can get the E0 for SURE at tankguys.com they have E0's for $350. only 29.99 more than usual. It's worth it IMO.

and yes these are great. My Q9650 at 3.6 Ghz was more stable, and Much Much Cooler, also ran faster and scored higher than my old Q6700 at 3.77 Ghz

I didn't try any lower than 3.6 Ghz as that was SOOO easy. no point in doing anything less. lol. I had to work for weeks to get my Q6700 stable at that speed. get one and you'll not regret it.

Totally useless to change if you don't oc that over the Q6600.
Q9550 thou much cooler and since that easier to oc.
