View Full Version : Do 45nm chips like lower temps?

In the above ambient range do they clock better if kept cool or does extra cooling just allow more voltage headroom? I know my AMD chips clocked a lot better if kept under 50*C.

In the sub ambient range how low do you have to go to start getting extra headroom without needing more vcore?

Why do I ask? aside from being an interesting topic, I am trying to decide if it would be worth it to spend 100 dollars to cool a 100 dollar chip lol. Am currently using one of those HDT pain in the ass coolers and contemplating a TRUE with two KAZE 1900rpm fans (stopped before entering CC number, had to think this over lol)... or maybe a water cooling setup.

Getting a good cooler is never a waste - it's an investment, allowing you to use it on this build, the next one, and the one after that. Intel 45nm chips do not in my experience clock better when cooler (obviously this only applies to a point, otherwise sub-ambient cooling would be useless), but they definitely live longer.
