You're buying something like that as a first? Get something that won't matter too much about denting as a first car. Plus Boras are pretty heavy. (the mk4 Jetta is a Bora in the UK.)

They all look pretty good.
And don't let anyone tell you not to get a Euro. It's still a common misconception that they are unreliable and expensive to maintain. Some parts may be more expensive, but most are about the same as Domestic and Japanese. And if you have some mechanical inclination, it's a bit fun to be able to fix your own car, and it saves you money over the stealerships.

100k miles isn't that much anymore.
Any of those cars, if taken care of should go well beyond 200,000, especially the Merc

Its because hes used to buying cars brand new he never buys used cars so when he sees its a used car and has miles he automatically says oh wow thats alot of miles , he doesnt realize the cars 6 years old its goign to have miles and its my first car what can he expect.
Im most likely going to get this one though if the guy drops the price and if he doesnt im screwed.

100k was a lot back i the 60s and 70s when engines had poor tolerances, horrible fuel quality, and non over drive transmission. From the mid 80s and onwards, 160-180k is considered getting up there. If the price was right I wouldn't even stop to blink to buy a car with 140k on it.

That seems a bit expensive for a car like that...

I got my 99 Taurus, yeah not my idea my dad bought it, for 2400 with 80k on it. Still running 2 years and about 8k miles later.

It's a ford, which are terrible, but it's large, comfortable, and decent on gas. Get about 25 on the highway...

I used to like the integras then they just got out of style and turned ugly in my eyes.

Thats the link to the car, the actual place hes selling it at which is Nautic Trade is about 15 mins away from my house.
This guy is known to sell his cars for very high prices and the cars he has in his lot are all very nice cars such as corvettes, mercedes, bmw's etc. he has a variaty of cars.
I'm surprised no one pointed out the check engine light is on in one of the pictures.

Possibly. It could be as small as just a dirty sensor (like a certain Range Rover in my parents garage) or something as large as a head gasket (like a certain Subaru Forester in my parents driveway)

Yeah, it's a pretty silly mistake, and certainly not going to help sell the car. As reberto states, a check engine light can come on for the most minor things, such as a reminder to do an oil change, or something major such as excessive knock/detonation. If you're truly interested in this car, I'd see if you can request for a prolonged test drive (10-20 minutes) if the check engine light is gone when you look at it, then go to Autozone and have them hook up a OBDII scanner to see if the code will pop up, which at that point they can tell you what is causing the light to come on.

The gas mileage is going to be OK, as long as you don't let the turbo come on.

Poor Reliability here and there will make you appreciate low mileage cars.

German Reliability over 100k miles = not so great

German cars over 100k miles = money pit

Expensive parts + working on it by yourself = recurring headaches

If this is your first car.....

Just know what your getting yourself into.

Judging from the tachometer, it's idling when the picture was taken. Yes, the light would stay on if you had the key in the ON position without starting it, but I've never seen a car that keeps its CEL on more than 3-5 seconds after starting up.

That because you had a B5. If he got a proper german car (MB, BMW) ;), he'd be fine after 100k. Probably up to 200-250k if he does regular maintenance of the engine.

Yes I know it looks weird becuase the tires are small and the rims arent exacly what you would call cool looking, they look cheap.

But I guess if I did get this they would deal with me for now untill I saved up enough for another set of rims.

What do you guys think of it?

Sorry for crappy pictures I dont have steady hands there always shaking and its from my camera phone.

Just by looking at the car, I would say it was owned by a youngster who drove it like he stole it.

As for German cars being money pits with high miles, cant really say. My father stopped owning german cars after his m3 blew an engine in the late 80's and my godfather buys benz/audi and keeps em for 3years tops and then gets rid of them.

The only experience with modern german cars I have is my coworker owns an 2001 jetta tdi and its on its second engine as he bought it with what he thought was a blow turbo but turned out to be huge compression leaks and cylinders being oval from wear, most likely due to bad oil however, he is a gear head so he does the work himself and we always talk shop together.
