RENAMED TO: PROJECT FAILURE!

It should be known that nearing the end of this "work log" I took a job offer that was to good to be true and thus had to halt my efforts... well actually I kind of just through everything together into a big sloppy mess of a workstation at the last minute upon getting the job... but to make matters worse, I lost a bunch of pictures, screwed up, and probably wasted a lot of people's time just by failing to complete this "work log". The below is a somewhat ordered photo collection of what I could salvage.

I'm taking the time to salvage what I can now for one reason and one reason alone:

I'm FREE!

This means the build I'm cooking up now is intended to be part redemption/part no limits and nothing other than my full time job. I intend to spare no expense and to the best of my ability create.... well, something, good or bad, ugly to some probably, but that's fine... for I have the time to muck around and do what I like to do best (play with new toys) until probably the end of this year (2009) without concern of cash flow.... (well at least not until the end of the year :-D ... but hey what good does money do in a savings account? I sure wouldn't know.)

I'll be starting a fresh work log soon enough (just as soon as I have most of the parts on hand).

Old "Work Log" as it existed and then it gets all mucked about and I just start throwing pictures around in this edit because
I really don't remember what order they're supposed to be in.

I just included the image of all four, there's only going to be two in this build, although:

http://www.xaxis.net/images/quad_4870x2.jpg

I've only found a total of 2 motherboards that will even accept all 4 cards due to there double-wide spacing. Both are manufactured by MSI ... I've been hounding AMD tech for over a month with questions concerning the above platform, not for gaming of course. In certain applications, in my case cryptography & cryptanalysis, the potential of unlocking the power of a single 4870X2 is mesmerizing but with four one would most certainly have a super computer at there finger tips.

The FASTRA project used that exact same motherboard with 4 nvidia 9800 GX2s in order to perform lengthy tomography calculations in a fraction of the time it took their university super computer do complete the same task. ( http://fastra.ua.ac.be/en/index.html ) The 4870X2s have a great deal more stream processors so as you can guess it's absolutely maddening to be unable to unlock there potential largely do to an underdeveloped API as where nvidia's CUDA has a much stronger community, despite the proprietary nature nvidia clings to... I'm sorry, I started ranting again. I have a habit of that.

My point was just to show the picture. Though when the day comes when all the driver and (or) motherboard issues are ironed out you'll be sure I'll build another system and post it about...

You got me thinking... that or as I simultaneously read the response I had the thought.. :) arghh.. I think... well, I have to say I feel a bit foolish for this just kicking into my brain, but despite the problems that ATIs drivers seemingly have with Four 4870X2s, there is absolutely no reason one need use this motherboard or any of the other very few with double wide spacing... the solution *as I hit myself in the head* water cool every card. Looking at my EK 4870X2 water blocks (I have two) I can see that one could fit 4 of these into systems with 4 PCIe Gen 2.0 x16 slots without the need for them being double spaced. The fit would be snug and perhaps a dual male-male connector of some sort would need be used to connect the waterblocks of any two cards that were so very close to each other, but I do believe they would fit, especially since you can take of the card's double wide extension card bracket and attache a single wide replacement!

Also, after hounding and hounding and even yelling at the people of ATI I just may be on the verge of confirmation along wtih the information concerning the system configuration they used for there supposed 8 GPU system they claimed to have made in a press release. Two tech support people have told me that the 8 GPU configuration with the newest Catalyst software (8.9) will work and one individual who I felt was more knowledgeable has said that it will not. I made him aware of his own companies press release saying they had created a similar system and was then transferred to another person who seemed extremely interested in helping me, spoke to me for over an hour about the details and my intent with the system and said that he would personally contact me by phone by the end of today with any details he could find in regard to the system specifics of ATI's 8 GPU system they claimed to have produced sometime last July...

Anyhow I'm now very excited and this project may indeed turn back into what I had intended it to be, an 8 GPU super computer blowing people's minds at a modest 9.6 TFLOPs ... hmmm, all of a sudden I have the urge to buy a skulltrail... time to shop around with eager and optimistic hopes... :D

... I just can't believe I never thought about the size differences of water cooled cards and those that are not until now... it means they're are indeed so many more possible motherboards that such a Four 4870X2 system could use (or at least that I could waste money on buying and trying).

Any motherboard suggestions?

IIRC Windows Vista is limited to 4 GPUs. You might be able to do dual quadfire ie. 2 monitors 4 gpus per monitor, but I doubt it

IIRC Windows Vista is limited to 4 GPUs. You might be able to do dual quadfire ie. 2 monitors 4 gpus per monitor, but I doubt it

I should remind that my intent is with this system is not to have 8 monitors or have the fastest CrossFireX gamine machine or CrossFireX at all... My intent is only to have enough access to all of the GPUs to allow me to continue to test and develop my GPGPU (General Purpose computations on GPUs) software which is designed to utilize the SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) paradigm of programming that allows for vastly parallel and fast computations in the context of stream processors (which the 4870X2s are packed full of).

Also, you're seemingly right I have indeed tried using nearly every flavor of windows with no luck when it comes to driver support, though I haven't retried all configurations again since the release of Catalyst 8.9. I should mention that in ALL operating systems I was still able to see that the motherboard(s) saw all the devices at an addressable level. So even without a fully functioning driver suite such as Catalyst even partial functionality (however achieved) would likely be enough for me to proceed with CAL and Brook+ and allow me to swing from the chandeliers (that I don't have) in pure geek excitement and joy.

Plus I'm a *nix snob... unles I'm gaming or I otherwise have to use doze (which happens more than i'd like to admit). :)

yes, you can see the adapters, however I believe windows and the directx API doesnt support more than 4 gpus, if it did I think we would have seen triple 9800GX2's in a machine long ago. I think if your handy with unix/linux than you can work to rig something up though

good luck with it all though, if you can figure the system out then more power to ya :yepp:

http://fastra.ua.ac.be/en/index.html ... check out 8! Three 9800GX2s are indeed possible as well as four.

These guys are from whom I got my inspiration... and of course urge to up them by a few TFLOPs if possible.

... Also, I have indeed tried Linux as well as every OS under the sun, Solaris, all the BSDs, even when I had no good reason to, most all of them have no driver support whatsoever... EDIT: I don't believe the directx API has anything to do with it aside perhaps from allowing a given video card to use a game/application that was written for or around it.

It's okay though I feel the time is near.*fingers crossed*

Oh God, did you win the lottery or something. All that hardware must have cost a lot, but well worth it with the effort here. The copper doesn't look so bad, just make it uniform with either all delrin or all acrylic. And you won't really tell when the loop is filled. If you're looking for ransinks, the Scythe Kama Wings look pretty cool.

haha... the lottery, I wish. Did I mention I live under a bridge with nothing but a small shelter made from computers? ;) I'll check out those ramsinks. And I suppose your right, it's the contrast that's bugging me the most. Buying a new EK water block (non derlin) might even everything out. ... I'm kind of torn over the issue. I find myself shopping for a new motherboard almost every day and just before I click 'Checkout' I cave and decide not to because the logical side of my brain finally kicks in and says "Dude, the i7 and company are right around the corner and even if you don't get an i7 board the price drops on the older stuff will be huge". So I suppose I'll keep on resisting as hard as I can until price drops a little more as far as that goes... I have to say though it's a mystery to me as to why the logical side of my brain calls me "Dude"...

Man thats an expensive setup. Where are the other two x2 going. Are you going to have two crossfire setup in your house. That just slightly nuts.

Also a bit surprised to not see a qx9770 or something. That PS is obviously overkill too. Are you putting peltier cooling in that thing because nothing in that systems going to use that much power. Even if you load it with 6 hard drives.

Minor Updates
I apologize for the delay. I ended up being offered a job that I couldn't turn down. I've been doing what I can in any free time I can find. Unfortunately I won't be able to put as much full time effort into this project as I had hoped... At least not for another few weeks at the least.

Anyway, I'll post a few images of some minor mods I've made, etc.

Decided I'm gonna go red for sure.
http://www.xaxis.net/images/1021-1.jpg
This is the front panel of the Lian Li PC-P80 with some paint adjustments. I decided I wanted to go with solid color non LED red fans for the radiators too.
http://www.xaxis.net/images/1021-2.jpg
The fans that come with the PC-P80 are blue. So I had to rip out the blue LEDs and replace them with red ones. (before)
http://www.xaxis.net/images/1021-3.jpg
(after)
http://www.xaxis.net/images/1021-4.jpg
Although I'm not sure on my final motherboard choice, I decided I really like these RAM coolers so picked them up on eBay.
http://www.xaxis.net/images/1021-5.jpg
The below is just some messing around with different possible connection scenarios. I've yet to receive a number of my "bits" in order to finish what I have in mind.
http://www.xaxis.net/images/1021-6.jpg
etc...
http://www.xaxis.net/images/1021-7.jpg
etc...
http://www.xaxis.net/images/1021-8.jpg

I hope to have some much cooler images to show in the next couple of weeks... I haven't been entirely honest: yes I have a new job that's taking up most of my waking time, but I've also been building a bench-top CNC mill with another small portion of my spare time... but it's for the sake of this project ... but certainly a side journey. :D I'll post a couple images of the CNC before to long.
That's all for now.

I'm loving the red theme here. You know you love to mod when you decide to switch out four LED's on a fan rather than just buying new fans. How did you paint the front mesh, was it held in by bent tabs, or does it slide out or something? I show particular interest in this, because I would like to do something with the P80 in the future. :yepp:

Painting was real straightforward. I just used metal enamel spray paint and applied three coats to both sides with as steady back and forth motions as I could manage. The front mesh came out after undoing about 12 screws and ripping away the foam that is used as padding along both of the right left edges.

Creative use of fittings to make your blocks work out. I'm not sure of your loop order but the inlet to the GTZ is just under the G. These large compressions can cover up the directional dot sometimes.

IMO you should either get some other king to black clamps or go with comps because the those worm drivers look mad ugly with the black tube. very good use of the dual 45's though :yepp:

Thanks for the warning but I'm aware. The inlet is the top MOSFET water block and the outlet is to be on the CPU block. :)

I had problems with the compression fittings due to spacing issues and indeed, I agree .. black clamps, they're in the mail.

Just 1 comment. Something i mentioned is that the case you have does not need to be spoiled like that.

One of the things i love about it is the fact that it can fit 2xdouble rads on the psu bridge as long as they go vertically on it. That way there is no way to cut the case up like that on the side.

Anw very nice build hope to see more

I decided to start working on the side panel the other day.

I intend to either use transparent red acrylic behind the cut out or transparent smoke black with lots of LED insanity...

For now, I've only got to the point of cutting out the panel and adding a primer coat.

I might end up making another design just for fun if I end up waiting much longer for some parts I need for the rest of the build.

We should hold a Dremel comp between you and Ashraf. Seriously nice work there

However when I take some more close-up pictures you probably won't think my dremel work is so good.. harhar. If anything I spent more time with sanding and correcting then cutting. Thanks though.

Oh my god it seems I'll have to mention your log to maxishine... I bet he would be interested.

Does anyone know where to find some Fiber Optic Diffusers ... maybe not "fiber" but basically I'm looking to find a paper width diffuser that I can spread LED light through.

For instance, on the front panel I would like to put such light diffusers behind the "circuit cut-out" on the right side. The diffusers would be slightly wider than the aluminum. That way a series of red LEDs can be installed behind the metal and create a "tracing effect" as the lights pulsated outwards from the largest circle...

Anyway I'll keep looking. If anyone knows of anything that might help I'd appreciate the information.

So, I realized that in the time I spent doing this by hand I probably could have finished my DIY CNC...

... I still need to do a bit of touch up work.

I finished the final painting of the case. Originally I had planned to turn this build into something I now think I'm going to avoid. I figured there was no point in using the PC-P80 if I was going to create something that didn't even remotely resemble the PC-P80, and so now this will only be a two loop case and I'm not going to have the CD-Drives ejecting through the side case panel.

I was going to detail some of the inside with some composite carbon fiber layers I picked up, but after messing around a bit I found that I liked the texture of this rubber material far more and it was quite a bit easier to work with. I'll be putting some rubber u-channel over the edges before to long to shore everything up for a cleaner look.

...I really need to find a better place to take pictures...

Okay, I'm going to go start mounting the radiators and stuff...

I'm thinking about cutting this design into the mesh and alluminium cross metal on the front door of the pc-p80 case (below). I would like to cut the corresponding design in acrylic to fit the removed areas of the front door. Then I would like to string 100-200 small fiber optic hairs to various locations on the design so that tiny red specs appear in an ordered fashion that will be programmed into a PIC or possibly an Atmel chip... Anyway, this project is mainly for the bling, but all the bling in the world with extreme deadened functionality isn't worth it. So, I guess I'm mainly talking to myself trying to figure this out, but with the below image shown where the black design area represents surface area that will restrict fan air flow which in turn cools the radiators behind, anyone have an opinion on whether or not to much air flow is being restricted or not?

not too much airflow restriction at all as long as you dont put it right up against the core of the rad and air needed will be pulled in from the sides.

I'm not sure I understand your overall concept and it sounds really difficult but VERY cool looking :yepp:

That's a good point. ... When I'm talking about fiber optics, I'm just speaking of the stuff you can get from those cheap toys or from those plastic roses that change colors... I just attach the other end to a hidden LED and the light travels down the end of the strings...

Har... I honestly wish I could tell you how much I make a month... it's never the same. One of the negatives of being a digital jack of all trades.

I'm sorry for lack of updates I had a job opportunity I couldn't pass up and so I've scarcely been able to work on this project and the work I have done isn't really what I originally wanted to do but aimed towards simply finishing, and so, a few photo updates:

up to 63 , but then its like WTF on 71 with the external rads on the back of the giant case and the red PSU mount that looks out of place

the inside looks good but the red tubing is out of place
