View Full Version : QuantumForce warped into new Office

After months of delays, caused by discussions over this and that we FINALLY moved to our shiny new office in Xindian :D (another part of Taipei)
Let me highlight the most interesting reasons for the delay :D

- lunch subventions (new office has no cafeteria)
- apartment sourcing and subventions (rents are higher around here)
- parking spots (new office is close to the center and finding a spot isnt easy)
- cucible arrangement (thanks to feng shui specialists our offices chi is flowing very nicely now or something :eh: )
- and last but not least discussions over ghosts causing us bad luck if we move in some particular month (the ghost busters movie seems to be commonly misunderstood as a documentary in asia) :P

I figured id share some pics with you as this might be interesting for some of you :)
Feel free to pop into our office anytime if you happen to wake up in taipei one of these days :D

The address is:
Beixin Road no 207 sec3 in Xindian Taipei, 11th floor
Its 5mins from the underground station Daipinglin and 10mins from the Gigabyte Headquarters actually :D

Thats it, architecture seems more or less of the same style as tapipei 101, but of course much smaller :D
similar angles, stone base and glass fassade, and we have a 7/11 and a cafe and restaurant in the base of our building as well ^^
The sun showed up just before i started taking pics in my lunch break
and despite the 6 elevators you see on one of the pics, and the fact that this building only has 16 floors, the average waiting time to get an elevator is 2minutes :zombie:

yeah, cubicles all look the same dont they? :D
nvidias new apac HQ is sweet tho, they have TEAM cubicles, which is the way to go imo, individual cucibles suck if you ask me... especially in a creative department the walls are only hurting the productivite and exchange of information...

and im sure you DO have some secrets that you wouldnt want to post online, maybe a playboy laying on your desk or a bottle of GAMMEL or something ^^

Thanks for posting Sascha, looks quite sweet
hope you guys will be pleasured with the new movement, now and in the futurewell we have our own lab now, which is cool, but then again its a bit small, only one 200L ln2 tank fits in :(
in the old lab peterhad up to 3 at a time iirc :D

The last pic looks just like my bedroom does Sascha :p:
Any news on my pink board ? :p:yeah, like i posted in the pcb color thread, they said its posible in theory, but a big hassle in practise, and for now we dont have time for something like that.
i only said "different colors" at first... so then later they asked, btw, so what colors do they want? when i said pink there were a lot of eye brows going up   :ROTF:

Wow nice looking office.
I dont suppose you need anyone to make the tea do you?
nope, but we can always need somebody to help us debug our latest boards :D so like i said, if you around the corner gimme a call or email and ill bring you in :D

i was wondering where you were at, didnt you get my text messages?
was very nice to meet you in person! very unexpected btw, dont laugh but i originally thought you were half korean actually :P

we could have played with x58 a bit and you could have peeked at whats covered by the quantum force logo on the pics :hehe:
Its called BloodRage btw :D

And about the feng shui, well, you know feng shui dictates that for a business sales should sit next to the entrance of the office/building, to "bring in" more sales and wealth etc... naturally it was SALES who told management about this feng shui stuff... ;)
they are just lazy and want to be able to leave the office quickly, is what i think!

there are 4 or 5 labs in this foxconn office alone, and there are half a dozen or so in taipei :D

nice joint :up::Djoint? :D

i'd be careful about the snack part after seeing some bad of what looked like small fried crabs or whatever that you got for him to "snack" on our way home :D:ROTF:hehehe, this one is even better, i call it diarhea soup :D

they are proud of not having cleaned those soup pots for years.
everytime there is skin forming on the soup surface they just pick it up and slap it on the side of the pots.
not cleaning the pots supposedly creates an even better and stronger taste... and they claim its very healthy :stick:

Settling in Taiwan? :D How do you find our lovely typhoon and quakes once in a while?

I'd get the same reaction from the Taiwanese if I were to show them pictures of some fish&chips or kebab joints from the UK..
There is always McDonald's/KFC/Burger king etc if you so choose.. but damn I'd take a bow of soup from those pots any day then a skinny ass McD burger...

In Taiwan, and especially major cities like Taipei you will typically find a convinent store located at EVERY corner of the street. It is not uncommon to see in a crossroad the 4 cornerstores are all convinent stores, but different company. 7-11 happens to be the largest chain store, and I'd be willing to bet there are far more 7-11s in Taipei then a similer sized city in the US. :D

Oh, and theres 7-11 stores everywhere in asia.

Settling in Taiwan? :D How do you find our lovely typhoon and quakes once in a while? :rofl:the sideways rain is quite annoying, and the rate at which umbrellas either fly up in the sky or get ripped apart is quite high, then again they cost nearly nothing over here, so... :D

I'd get the same reaction from the Taiwanese if I were to show them pictures of some fish&chips or kebab joints from the UK.. :shrug:no my friend!
you get the same reaction from me, and from maaany other westerners!
i still remember chips and cheeze, basically the worst cheese replacement made of fat mixed with colors and artificial flavor melted and then half a liter of that poured over a cup of french fries :S

and i still remember the kebab that looked and actually tasted like gum and came with garlic flavoured mayonese instead of zaziki and a wobbly seemingly 1 week old pita bread

There is always McDonald's/KFC/Burger king etc if you so choose.. but damn I'd take a bow of soup from those pots any day then a skinny ass McD burger... :shrug:im not a fan of KFC, but yeah mcd and bk are good over here! except for the rice burgers which i actually havent seen a single person over here eat so far... i wonder why they keep trying to sell those...
unfortunately mcd doesnt have quaterpounders over here, my fav burger :,( :D

Westerners should be more open minded! we survived for 5000 years eating those "crap" didn't we?
your barking up the wrong tree :D
your talking to a guy who ate every weird food here so far, except for smelly tofu... i couldnt bring myself to swallow it so far, the smell is just... too much

but i had every sort of fish and clam, fermented fish, snake intestants in alcohol, snake blood, snake soup, crocodile, ants, water beetles (look like cochroaches), worms, cow intestants, chicken intestants, the all famous chicken butt, chicken feet, fermented black eggs...
thats all i can think of for now ^^

the only stuff i refused so far was those shrimp/crab like things that you get served alive andthey want you to boild them alive.
which wouldnt be that bad if the water wouldnt actually be boilding, its just hot, so they die slowly... :S
and i refused to eat living octopus/squid in korea... people say it feels really funny how the legs try to crawl out of your mouth even after you bit them off, but... those creatures are rather intelligent actually and i dont feel like eating them...
and i didnt eat any cat or dog... dog i might try, but cat... i cant... i had cats as pets so i really couldnt do that...

the funny thing is almost every taiwanese i tell about this goes WOW, you ate that stuff??

i really like the food here, i loooove dumplings :D
but to be honest, after a few months the food is annoying me a bit.
there is too much oil, fat, spices and sugar in almost every food.
but like you said, there are sandwiches and burgers everywhere, and i love taiwanese-italian fusion food!!! :D

Wow, i didn't know 7/11 had made it outside the US.

And congratulations on the new offices!
there must be 10.000 shops in taipei, i kid you not!
in most rurual areas you can see at least one other 7/11 shop when you stand in front of one and look around
ive even seen some 7/11 shops as close as 10m next to each other

Naa I wasn't meant directly at you... it is very typical (in my opinion) for westerners to eww and erghh at what the east eats. But more often then not if they get over the psychological barrier and actually try them, they will like it. However there are limits to what you should put into your mouth...

Taiwan's smelly tofu is famous all over asia!! although it is like marmite.. you either love it or hate it... but then there are some that just smells like plain ol :banana::banana::banana:.

but i had every sort of fish and clam, fermented fish, snake intestants in alcohol, snake blood, snake soup, crocodile, ants, water beetles (look like cochroaches), worms, cow intestants, chicken intestants, the all famous chicken butt, chicken feet, fermented black eggs...
thats all i can think of for now ^^You see, now THATS is pretty extreme... I know there are a (very) few places in Taiwan that does full courses of insect dishes... but I'm happy to say I've never seen one and hopefully never will..

the only stuff i refused so far was those shrimp/crab like things that you get served alive andthey want you to boild them alive.
which wouldnt be that bad if the water wouldnt actually be boilding, its just hot, so they die slowly... :SWow they really take you to "special" places don't they?
There's a dish where the body of the fish is fried and crispy, then toped with sources, but the head is still alive!! and the mouth and eyes are still moving and gasping for water when served... can't argue if it's fresh...

and i refused to eat living octopus/squid in korea... people say it feels really funny how the legs try to crawl out of your mouth even after you bit them off, but... those creatures are rather intelligent actually and i dont feel like eating them...

the funny thing is almost every taiwanese i tell about this goes WOW, you ate that stuff??  :lol:Yeah insects and pets are off limits for me... I think cat/dog meat restaurants are illegal in Taiwan? Korea has many though...
Cow/chicken/pig intestines are popular in Taiwanese crusine anyway, I'd agree you sound pretty brave to have eaten some of those things..
You had some pigs-blood-rice-cake-on-a-stick thing? damn I miss those! :D

i really like the food here, i loooove dumplings :D

Yeah Taiwanese foods are pretty oily, so foreigners, even in neighboring asian countries find it hard to adjust, and typically have a week or two of diarrhea.. not that the food is unhygienic, but the body is not used to the spice and oilyness of our food... Of course there's always fast food, TGI Friday's, steak houses, starbucks etc to fall back on.

It's always fascinating to hear how foreigners sees your country, and what seemingly ordinary things to a local can be extraordinary when looked at with a fresh pair of eyes.

Yeah mate. Here's a pic to jog the memory: http://gallery.systemshock.co.za/v/taipei2008/100_2065.jpg.html <-- me on the left, Tim Handley from GIGABYTE in the middle and Nick Ross on the right - Nick and I are the guys behind The Overclocker (http://www.theoverclocker.com).

Drop me a line about any Quantum Force stuff for the mag ;) Also I'll be back in Taiwan/Taipei in November - perhaps we can organise a catch up then.

Yes, living in England I get depressed at the choice of cheap and tasty food... and they all seems to be of a golden brown colour...! :ROTF:back then i worked for amd, and they provided houses for us where several employees lived together. luckily i lived there with a french and italian guy most of the time, both of who were excellent cooks! one of them actually worked as a chef in a restaurant before :D but yeah... for me everything in the uk was depressing... the food, the prices, the weather, the unfriendly people, the BIG women :D
sure there were exceptions and i met some really nice people there and had a good time thanks to them, but overall the uk really isnt my place... at least the southwest around basingstoke where i stayed :D

obxford and london and bristol were cool though... my favourite place was bristol hands down :D

That's because if you want good rice burgers you go to Mos Burger :D Sometimes McD has seasonal pork teriyaki burger!! Now thats nice!!teriyaki? ok, ill look out for them... i loved the tripple big mac they had during the olympics :slobber: :D
the rice burger at mos? ok, ill give it a try... their hot dogs are ok and their crab burger is pretty nice! all their stuff is way too small tho

Naa I wasn't meant directly at you... it is very typical (in my opinion) for westerners to eww and erghh at what the east eats. But more often then not if they get over the psychological barrier and actually try them, they will like it. However there are limits to what you should put into your mouth...yeah, definately... i tried some fermented tofu in china, that actually tasted really nice, but thatseriosuly messed up my stomach :D (i think it was the tofu, but with the food control in china you never know, could have been anything i ate that night)

Taiwan's smelly tofu is famous all over asia!! although it is like marmite.. you either love it or hate it... but then there are some that just smells like plain ol :banana::banana::banana:.yes!
it even went as far as a friend from taiwan saying "you smell that? theres gotta be some smelly tofu around here, you wanna try it?" and then we went around the corner and... oh it wasnt tofu, they were just reworking the sewer!

You see, now THATS is pretty extreme... I know there are a (very) few places in Taiwan that does full courses of insect dishes... but I'm happy to say I've never seen one and hopefully never will.. :sick:that was actually in china when i visited our factory :D

Wow they really take you to "special" places don't they?
There's a dish where the body of the fish is fried and crispy, then toped with sources, but the head is still alive!! and the mouth and eyes are still moving and gasping for water when served... can't argue if it's fresh...
 are you serious? :o
so... the fish is pretty much fried... alive? :S

Yeah insects and pets are off limits for me...
:Dpig blood rice cake on a stick... not that i know of! :D
ill ask for it :D

Yeah Taiwanese foods are pretty oily, so foreigners, even in neighboring asian countries find it hard to adjust, and typically have a week or two of diarrhea.. not that the food is unhygienic, but the body is not used to the spice and oilyness of our food... Of course there's always fast food, TGI Friday's, steak houses, starbucks etc to fall back on. :up:subways! :D
i really dont like tgi fridays over here... i went there twice and the meat really sucked, the service was terrible...
steak houses over here are amazing, just like in the US, top notch!
and actually i got along with the food really well from day1, but after 3 months i started to not like it anymore... i still eat it but not that much.

It's always fascinating to hear how foreigners sees your country, and what seemingly ordinary things to a local can be extraordinary when looked at with a fresh pair of eyes.
yeah, and living elsewhere and coming back you get an idea of what its like for foreigners to enter your country sometimes, quite interesting :D

cafe, 2 restaurants and 7/11 in the lobby, about 2 dozen restaurants within 1000m and a subways and mcdonnals around 250m away each :D

BUT, the elevator system seriously sucks...
especially during lunch time it usually takes 3 minutes or more until an elevator even arrives, and then another 3 minutes until you arrive in the lobby. so basically it takes almost 10 minutes each to leave and enter the building, which i find very annoying.
in the old office (the headquarters) we had a 7/11 like supermarket inside the office building, so you just walk out of the department and go to the next higher floor, buy something, go downstairs and walk back to the department and the whole trip takes you maybe 3mins.

just picking up something quickly isnt possible here, a roundtrip takes you at least 10minutes, during traffic times 15 to 20minutes...

i think ill start using the stairs :D
takes the same time i guess, but i get some exercise and i dont have to stand around and wait for the elevator or wait for the elevator to arrive where i want to go :D
YES, i know im impatient :P
