I believe Best Buy still has a Gateway P-7811FX for $1299. It's a 17" notebook with a Geforce 9800M GTS, which is the equivalent of a desktop 9600GT in performance.

I think the dell 15 xps can be had for such a price, my friend has one and he loves it.

Usually the 15"ers don't have the same video card options.

The original question needs more preference. Power vs battery? Size?

I have a 13" Dell M1330, and like it a lot. It has an 8400gs, but that's no good for games. I don't care, because I have a desktop for games. I wanted small and light, and an 8400gs is better than nothing. Because it's no-games, I installed Ubuntu and run it full-time.

He doesnt care about size, battery power etc. Its pretty much going to be a mobile desktop for him so the more power the better. I bought my laptop from Best Buy and noticed they had some insane deals sometimes there I got mine for 400 bucks and its normally 650. I'm going to show him some of those link, thanks!

Agreed that gateway beats the pants off anything for the money right now.

Wow, thats a great deal! You get the 1920 res screen too! If its mobile, a 17 inch screen would be much better than 20.1, battery may last longer. :)

The Gateway is nice, but it is just a remanufactured Clevo M570TU. For a per-built system though, you can't go wrong with it. Very nice value, and there is nothing that it is missing. The HP is more for bling, I'm a bling kind of guy. If I was under a strict $1500 budget though, I would save a few bucks and buy the Gateway.

The Gateway previously mentioned can be had for under $1000 on Ebay. Fantastic bargain.

In fact, it was ~$600 + shipping on Tigerdirect a couple months back. Refurb model, but still ... !

A Clevo D901c is a nice desktop replacement now that I think about it. That is only the chipset name, but I'm sure if you look it up you will find a remanufacturer that makes it. 17" screen, SLI available, supports socket 775 and can overclock. And it's a notebook. I'm not saying it feels/looks/weighs like a notebook. It's like 15 pounds. Seriously.
