Hey guys!

This is my first work log ever because: 1st) I'm a lazy bum and 2nd) I suck in photography 3rd) I keep on switching hardware. But this time I really need some words of encouragement (and advice) to finish this.

With those concepts in mind bare with me.

My plan is to have a good old trustworthy machine running Crossfire 16x. Some components I bought back in Mar/08 and refuse to take the fall in price to resell and buy new (like 4780's and blocks etc).

Colors:
As the name Flat Black in Blue. Everything inside as flat black as possible tubes/liquid will be uv blue and discrete blue leds in some spots.

Core:
Case: LianLi rebadged Rocketfish
Motherboard: DFI Lanparty LT X48-TR2
CPU: Intel Q9650
Video: 2 x ATI Radeon 3870 (plan to voltmod)
RAM: G.SKILL F2-9600CL5D-4GBPI 2 vs 2Gb 1300Mhz
Optical: Samsung Writemaster DVDRW
HDD's1_2 RAID0: 2 x WD Raptors 74gb 10000rpms sataI
HDD's2_3 RAID1: 2 x WD 250 250gb sataII
PSU: Silverstone OP1000w-E

Cooling:
CPU: OCZ Cryo-Z (yes I got one)
GPU: 2 x EK-FC3870 Full Cover Nickel-Plated CF ready
Chipset: Danger Den MPC Universal w/ custom backplate
PWM Mosfets: HeatKiller SW-16 for DFI X48 w/ custom backplate
Board Mosfets: Enzotech MOS-C1
South Bridge: Enzotech SLF-1
Ram: OCZ XTC DDR2 Cooler
Radiator: Termochill PA120.3 with Mouting Mods Custom Grill
Rad Fans: Yate Loons med speed
Fan controllers: 2 x Sunbeam Rheobus
Pump: Swiftech MCP 655
Reservoir: Swiftech Micro RES
Tubing: MasterKleer 7/16" clear or XSPC 7/16" UV Blue/Clear (help decide!)
Fittings: 7 x Bistpower Compression 7/16" / 1 x Danger Den Fillport with BP Angle fitting / Draining 1 x BP Sealing Plug

Case Mods and Add-Ons:
All flat black inside case (with 3m Rubberized dampening flat black spray);
Window mod;
All flat black cables and wires (cable routing and black sleeving);
PA120.3 on top including DD fill port angled;
Blue CCFL lighting (switchable) all around (inside EK's GPU blocks using BP led taps);
4 x Cold cathode lamps 10";
Flat black OCZ XTC Cooler;
Probably a powdered coated flat black Cryo-Z Case;
Feser Pre-Mixed UV Blue;
All flat black/oxide hex type head screws

Will ad more when I get the ideas going.

Now lets talk pictures:

You are in for one hell of a ride, lol. I did a phase/water project once. It's like a giant puzzle, but you'll have a blast.

Looks like you bought some anti-gravity parts up in the top picture. ;)

This should be a great project, keep us updated and work hard on it.

What's with all the paint? Rubber undercoating?

Outstanding! Too bad they won't ship, "because of the compressor". Frozen CPU ships phase change units, wonder what the deal actually is. Not bad at all for $399, hope it performs well. Tried searching for other resellers and I think CCC is the only one.

Hello everybody I'm back from short vacation in San Diego - what a beautiful city!

I'm refreshed to get to work with the project this week when time permits. But first let me answer some questions:

It's so nice to finally have a case that people on XS also deem worthy. That OCZ unit looks awesome, and I wish I could have picked one up.

What's with all the paint? Rubber undercoating?

The rubberized undercoat from 3M will be the base of the chassis to give the entire case as much as sound dampening as possible without using those ugly sponges. It will also provide a better insulation for the phase change.

All the paint will be used in different areas and is a result of testing in my weather conditions (too much ecstatic/dryness). But basically what will be done is prep surface with primer (most of them didn't work here in Arizona duo to the dryness), then top it off with a Flat Black paint and for the case the rubberized 3M spray. Finally a good hand of enamel or clear coat.

Parts to be painted:
- 1 dvd rom left side; flat black
- 1 wd raptor; flat back
- case chassi; flat black 3m rubberized
- drive locks; metallic blue
- hd case; flat black

Being a cali resident, where is this store, and could I still pick one up?

Give them a call and ask.

Yes the interior will be Flat Black also with the Rubberized 3M spray paint for better insulation and sound dampening proprierties.

I already did the black priming yesterday (as you can see on the frontal pic below the Fillport). I'm also working in the holes for cable management and will post new updates this weekend.

Here's what I've done these last couple of days, the inside components painted to Flat Black, the case skeleton all painted with the 3M Rubberized sound dampening spray paint and some other stuff:

Tools I used to do the holes in the case:
http://i33.tinypic.com/eunjgz.jpg
Again very easy to make holes with these, instead of using the Dremel discs cutter that is usually a pain.

Black screws for the case (drives and cards):
http://i38.tinypic.com/5ofqj6.jpg
The big ones will go for Rads and small screws for drives, cards etc. I love allen type screws!

Case components in Flat Black
http://i35.tinypic.com/17352h.jpg
I will fit 4 sata drives in that only cage I needed some extra space so I removed the 2nd hard drive case.

Case Before
http://i35.tinypic.com/96yqsl.jpg
*credits to jdm003 for this pic

After: here's how it looked after Primer>Paint>3M Paint>Enamel all FlatBlack, and with the holes still unfinished:
http://i34.tinypic.com/14id9w0.jpg
It took me 2 days to paint (cold weather) and the rubberized spray is really decent and neat looks a bit like powder coating some times but WAY cheaper

FlatBlackCase with smoothed out holes:
http://i33.tinypic.com/296irs9.jpg

Front (notice that I didn't use the 3M rubber for front and back only on the inside):
http://i33.tinypic.com/29m3hfk.jpg
The red drawing is where I'm going to hide the pump I also did that little hole on the side to connect the wires to the PSU.

Another close up of the case and the magic 3M Rubberized Undercoat
http://i34.tinypic.com/fc47j4.jpg

Still deciding what to install as add-ons on the front (extra 120mm fan? Any suggestions?)

Hope you guys enjoyed these updates now I'm stuck a bit waiting for new stock of the BP ST Transfer Fittings so I can attach to the Reservoir.

Other stuff pending also: uv coolant, some extensions, internal card reader, more insulation material from DD, dialectic grease, etc.

I'm also thinking about using 2 black tubing only for the inlet from Fillport to the Reservoir top and from the outlet to the Drain Valve in the bottom (coming out from the last ATI Radeon) what do you guys think? Will it look decent or should I keep all tubing transparent with blue UV?

Time for a new update!

I'm still waiting on some minor parts and also for OCZ Support to help me get my Cryo-Z going smoothly. So I decided to get some things done this weekend:

Core Main Components
http://i37.tinypic.com/2qi3h9c.jpg

*Just receive the Q9650 1.2125vid and those superb G.Skill Pi they are flowing 1300Mhz++ with less then 2.0v on these DFI X48 boards

Naked Truth:

*Clean as a whistle

Voltmods?
http://i37.tinypic.com/219e3wm.jpg

*Shook the dust out of my soldering iron and applied these simple 100k pots to raise DDR and Vcore volts a little :yepp:

Speed (raptors) and Storage (normal WD's):
http://i38.tinypic.com/2qn4g2b.jpg

*Notice that I painted one of the Raptor's top Flat Black? I used mask tape of course...

Before the cages where 2 and took a lot of space for 6 HD's

Before:
http://i35.tinypic.com/2eqgv9h.jpg

I decided to place 4 HD's in only one cage and twist the cage backwards so all the cables would be nice and clean hidden from the back, made new fitting holes too <TM> Just trade marked - Lian-Li MONEY for the IDEA PLEASE :ROTF:

4 HD's in small cage:
http://i33.tinypic.com/2ahy3xi.jpg

I used a 3m Heavy Duty 2 sided tape to place the last one on top, hope these 4 HD's don't fry in there!

Done:
http://i35.tinypic.com/34e4uvs.jpg

New Cage inside the case with better lighting:
http://i35.tinypic.com/29vmdkx.jpg

Now for the PA120.3 mount:
http://i38.tinypic.com/4g3sbs.jpg

Fitted on the top:

Very nice! I really like the paint on your case, can you give me more specifics on the paint that you used?

I haven't seen MCP-655's to get too hot, so your insulation will probably be ok. I think as long as you insulate the base from the case it won't make much noise. You definitely won't hear it over the compressor running.

Hey BlueAqua, the paint I used was the 3M Rubberized Flat Black Undercoat:
http://i38.tinypic.com/w6qyo7.jpg

It gives a rugged look and textured in rubber makes a good sound dampening material.

I started off applying a light coat of spray black primer twice, after a long drying period I applied a light coat of normal flat black paint.

After a while I gave the 1st 3M Rubber layer and then I repeated the process 3 times always using light sprays.

I would always use compressed air and brush to take excess away (little rubber particles would come loose) after each coat.

I then use a high performance enamel twice (see picture).

To finish I used a Clear Coat spray you can find in any autoparts reseller.

Hey 'papa' thanks I just did a light insulation on the 655 more to hide it inside then to prevent noise. It's kinda of a hassle to prep the system for 1st run! And I got a leak on one of the HD3870's loop :shakes:

The SB doesn't need to be cooled at all, ppl reported with the max voltage and above 500fsb no heat at all. And it would be more tubes and cuts and kinks in so little space.

Awesome!

Awesome work!!! I like the rubberised paint, different to the usual.

yeah its been quiet in here of late! I was hoping for feedback/suggestions on my build but narry a peep (except for MOMO)

I have the same cooler on my P35s SB and it does the job of keeping it cool!

I cant work out where your drain hole is tho?!?!

emu

Yes it looks so sleek that rubber paint, it was a gamble never seen that paint before but it worked out nice.

I'm gonna peek your thread too

The Drain Valve comes out of the second HD3870 and goes to the back of the case right above the PSU hole.

Thanks for the feedback.

Started of with a Canon Sx100 but from a certain point on I'm using a Nikon D60 with the standard lens.

As promised some more updates!

Well I decided to work on the side panel.

I like lights but I don't like it to shine more then the sun and also I always hated to see lights inside the build.

So after longs hours working on a idea I decided to disassemble 6 lights and attache them to the side panel in a way it would be easy to plug in and out as needed.

I also assembled the lights in a way I can use them with my Sunbeam Fan Controller:

http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/images/products/SB-Rheobus-BK_01.jpg

Using this device to control the lights and different tones I can hit more volts for white or more volts for blue or more volts for uv!

So I get different combination of lighting as needed.

It took me long but I did it work great I think:

Bring the light!

http://i37.tinypic.com/200r5au.jpg
* Tools: sleeving kit, soldering iron; glue gun and imagination!

Detail:

http://i37.tinypic.com/24ynvom.jpg
*The plugs where all modified to fan plugs so it would fit easily on the Sunbeam. Looking at the pics doesn't seam to be fair looks sooo easy!

I also started the actual hardware assembly in the case. Started with some insulation for the mobo using loc.o's eraser method (http://www.xtremesystems.org/Forums/showthread.php?t=201916) and it is much better then Grease

Insulation 101:

http://i33.tinypic.com/jl5cwi.jpg

It's over:
http://i34.tinypic.com/a1ogw4.jpg

Regarding the Cryo-Z I had some problems with it, it wasn't turning my pc on after it hit's -30oC see thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/Forums/showthread.php?t=204388 As you can see OCZ support can't seam to be so good for the Cryo-Z:

So I came up with my own idea to get this working:

http://i36.tinypic.com/oqzm77.jpg
* Blue switch will turn the Cryo-Z ON and after that I can power the mobo on the case. The red switch is a BIOS RESET thru mobo jumper

With that out of the way I decided to PIMP the Cryo-Z a little bit :pimp:

Cryo-Z fresh:

http://i37.tinypic.com/15xwpyw.jpg
http://i38.tinypic.com/219q6tu.jpg

Cryo-Z lightly PIMPED:

http://i33.tinypic.com/ehyqyt.jpg
http://i36.tinypic.com/2d1mgib.jpg
* Sleeved and Polished with the 'Dremel'
Future upgrade will be powder coat black and blue lights inside!

Now just to tease a little bit I put the side panel in front of the case and snapped a shot *runs* added glow because it's still a long way to be done

I'm on the final stages of testing the hole set up and this journey is coming to an end...

After the successful leak test (PA120.3 was leaking thru the bleed hole that came loose from Termochill I had to tighten it firmly) I decided to mount the PSU and start the dreadful cable management!

At first glance it seams impossible to accomplish especially you you have a 80A biffy 1000w single rail PSU.

Lets manage some cables?
http://i34.tinypic.com/2qjdrhz.jpg

http://i37.tinypic.com/ngy7ir.jpg
* I only used a light spray of pin on the back so it would be easier to attach the cables and close the side panel of course.

How about now?
http://i38.tinypic.com/iz8ger.jpg

http://i38.tinypic.com/294rsj6.jpg
* Work done! Took me a couple of hours to route this for a perfect fit!
Glue gun FTW! :ROTF:

Case Closed!

* Perfect fit!

What do you guys think?

Yeah it's a pain in the beginning but pays off as you will see on my NIGHT PICS that yo can change the shades of the CCFL and all.

I just ripped the original power cables apart and kept the red/black wires coming out the light controller then it's easy to solder the ends to a fan connector...

Also make sure you only use a little dot of hot glue on the side panel before final positioning because it will take while to get them not to bump on anything else when you close the case.

Hey Guys!

The testing went very well but the Cryo-Z socket assembly inside the tight spaces is VERY tricky! I had to do it 4 times before hitting the jackpot.

The temps raise and the evap can't stabilize if it's a tiny bit off the center.
But with a good assembly it's all good:

On idle it's holding the Quad9650 @ 4049Mhz with -46 according to Smartguardian

IDLE:
http://i36.tinypic.com/vg7fhs.png

Full Linpack Load (wont get hotter then this) held the Quad @ - 25 to -21:
http://i36.tinypic.com/xc6c13.jpg

The watercooling seams to be working as it should too, North Bridge and PWM area won't pass 35oC and the HOT Radeon's 3870 are idling 37oC with all the Fans in Silent Mode (Yate's Medium speed with 7v). Before this upgrade 55-60-79!

I can't upload the final pics yet it's too late and I'm tired and more testing will be done when I finish the Q9650 burn-in.

Look sweet, and I've got few questions, sorry I've they've been asked before, couldn't find them : )
Do you need to change sth in Cryo-z after some period of time, or you just plug&play it, without bothering about anything?
And where you've bought it, I've been looking through the net for prices, or anything and couldn't find : ( .
And again, your build is lovely simply.

This unit is just awesome! Can hold a Quad very easily so far way below -10 under load (Linpack).

The only thing is you don't have ANY support from OCZ on this, you buy it and you're on your one.

Thanks mate! It's plug&play. Great unit. You can buy them at Central Computers just go there and pick one up (apparently after they shipped mine and it got a bug on the controller they are not shipping anymore).

Haven't seen a Custom build under $400 showing -69oC under a Quad load.

Problem with Custom Build is that builders are unreliable as life is. Mom dies: no Phase, car crash: no Phase, Markets Plunged: no Phase for you, too many variables to finally get your hands on a good and solid unit. And then again they are above $650 to perform similar to a Cryo-Z.

Nice build! I especially like the rubberized MB tray look. Simply awesome!

Thank you Sir! I fiddle around that idea for a long time and I can say is a first

Nice job Jor3lBR. I thought you were planning to install the phase change under the case.

How are you enjoying the phase?

Believe me Blue I tried:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=201412

Plans where to disassemble the Cryo and mount it inside the bottom of the case but others disagreed with me regarding space and heat oputput so I let it be.

On my actual config it suits me better, I got a stand from Ikea and the Cryo sits next to the window by the floor, then the furniture for the PC and the case is inside.

So you don't see the Cryo and it's perfectly camouflaged and easy to disassemble too.

I will take a shot of the Case and Cryo in the office space

Forgot to say that the unit is just amazing so far. I did overnight Linpack with 4045Mhz and unit was freezing at -69oC LOADED! Can't argue with that mate.
I'm still burning in the cpu then I can give it 1.6vtt and 1.5vcore to see what the Cryo is made of.

Only real problem I see is support and warranty, so far OCZ just plain ignores me regarding the issue I had with the Cooler Express Board (like Fugger said), so if your not savvy the unit will be paper weight. It's no biggy and I was able to put my brain to work and get this thing going smoothly but without this: http://i36.tinypic.com/oqzm77.jpg and this: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=204388 the unit would be dead and OCZ is still "looking into some answers":down:

thanks for answering my question, what do you think it is that is so loud, the fan, or the compressor?

Depending where it's installed it's not loud at all, mine is beside the table and 50db is ok for me and this is WAY more silent then ATI's Video Cards Stock Fans, so I can only hear it because I have WC for all my ATI's.

I can't really tell if the sound is coming more from compressor or the fan but I can try to record it for you.
