This is *weird*, not sure if its anything to do with the Blackops but i'll post here anyway just to see what people make of it..

I was playing Crysis Warhead (amazing game btw) for an hour or two, then quit the game and just as i quit there was a *clunk* from one of the my hard disks, the same clunk they make at power on or when shutting down. Then suddenly i got a red screen of death, 'page fault in non-paged area' for atikmdag.sys.

I have the crash dump that Windows saved if anyone cares to look at it, but I've never seen a RSOD before.. very very weird. I wonder if its because of Catalyst 8.9..

Exact same thing just happened again, I quit Crysis Warhead and the hard drive clunked and the rsod came up.

I'm updating my chipset drivers, I think the hd actually spun down because when it rebooted, it paused for 10 seconds or so before clunking again and then booting..

I heard that RSOD exist in some... shall we say... not 100% proper versions of vista ;)

I run Server 2008 not Vista :p

And seriously, who pays for microsoft OS's these days?

They're built on the same kernel ;) (you're using the vista drivers, right?)

And i do :yepp:

This problem is almost certainly ATI driver related.

Man....

I am getting red screen crashes too, or my driver stops responding whenever I am gaming or running Vangage under crossfire mode!!!

I have tested both my 4850's individually in the first slot, and together with a different crossfire adaptor between both pairs of crossfire connectors.

Both cards work 100% fine individually, as soon as crossfire is activated, either my drivers stop responding while gaming or running Vantage, or I get a RED SCREEN crash.

What a pain this is going to be to try and fix, my cards are fine, but something else isnt???

I just googled Red Screen of death and it bought me here, it isnt a problem with your Foxconn board, because it is happening on my MSI.

Could this topic please be moved to the graphics or another more appropriate section so that more people get the chance to read it and reply if they can help?

I think it is a driver problem, but I have tried both catalyst 8.8 and 8.9 and it still happens.

I dont think it is an OS problem either because I am running Vista 64 bit, and my Crossfire 3850's previously worked 100% fine?

I heard that RSOD exist in some... shall we say... not 100% proper versions of vista ;)

My Windows Vista is 100% legit, I paid £129 for it and I have gone through the reactivation process for it several times when upgrading, and although it is an OEM, because it is being used on the same PC I bought it with, I am allowed to reactivate it however many times I like. It has definately been activated for at least the 5th time, and Microsoft recognise it as a legit copy on the same PC it was purchased for, which is just being upgraded continuosly.

I have raised this issue on AMD Game forums:

http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=262&threadid=100479&enterthread=y

And on MSI forums:

http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=120169.msg907658#msg907658

And will also Email ATI support, but I know they are useless.

I actually have seen the RSOD a couple of times today while overclocking a 4GB mem kit. 3DMARK Vantage seems to be the only program that triggers it the kit ran fine with the clocks on every other benchmark... I'm running a Sapphire HD4850 Toxic at the moment on 8.8 Catalysts.

Red screen sounds bad compared to blue screen. :(

found this on the web :

The Red Screen of Death (Windows)
Microsoft’s infamous Screens of Death come in multiple colors? Who knew? According to Wikipedia, some beta versions of Longhorn–the operating system that became Windows Vista–crashed with a full-screen error message that was red rather than the more familiar blue. Wikipedia seems to say that the final version of Vista can die with a red color scheme when the boot loader has problems, too. I’m relieved to say I’ve never encountered that, as far as I can remember.

I do like the idea of an exclusive SoD in a designer color, though. Maybe Microsoft should team with the (Product) Red folks and revive the RSoD as a charitable effort? If I knew that fifty cents went to a worthy cause every time my PC croaked, I’d be at least slightly less apoplectic

I've had rsod a few times.
i'm not really sure what exactly it means.
that quote wasn't exactly enlightening, i'd love to get a better explanation.

mhhh definately contact ati tech support about this to let them know about the issue.
i worked for amd tech support during the amd ati merger, and if they dont get enough support tickets asking them to fix an issue, itll take a while or might not even happen.

sorry to hear about this, and good luck guys! :toast:

PS: i know MS employees who use "special" vista and xp versions... :D
