Portal: Prelude, as its name states it, is an unofficial prequel to the game Portal. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees, whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, and also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex and compete with Black Mesa's superiority.

All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell...

This game is totally free and set to be released somewhere around the end of the month. It offers a bit more gameplay hours than the original Portal, with 8 chapters, 19 test chambers, 48 challenges, 6 advanced maps, a brand new storyline and more than 400 lines of speech with english and french subtitles.

Remember kids, it's not just a mappack, it's a whole new story, and I hope that you'll appreciate the work done for you. The game is set to be released somewhere around the end of september, or the beginning of october.

Yesterday, we got our first contact with the french community manager of Valve. Yes, Valve. The marvellous company that brought Portal and so much more to us for years. Don't take me wrong, I'm not trying to seduce anyone, but believe me, it was huge. I was so happy and so scared at the same time. For your information, they don't seem to bother about us doing a prequel for Portal. They're even sending us their congratulations and they seem to enjoy what we're doing. So, please guys, stop saying everywhere that Valve is going to murder us, or something.

holy crap, ownage. I'm really glad Valve isn't making a fuss over it. They might even endorse it, sort of like they did with Blue Shift and Opposing Force. That would be pretty cool.

Valve will never, ever, discourage any modding effort on their engine. It's the main reason Valve are on the top.

G.Foyle
09-23-2008, 12:34 AM
Hammer itself is easy to use, but creating something that will look good and play good, well, thats a different story :D
IMO it's easier to learn than UEditor 3 or any ID Tech 4 editor, but some tasks might be a bit more cumbersome.

Unfortunately this is impossible due to the nature of Source Engine. BSP tree, potentially visible sets and lightmaps all have to be pre-calculated; you have to compile every map before you can run it in the engine. Compiling is a lengthy process and for big maps it can take hours, even on fast quad core CPU.

Such editors are only possible in engines that have real time ambient maps and real time visibility calculation(Cryengine, UEngine 3).

Untrue.

Source can do it, you just have to save the state and vis it after ending the game.

When has Valve ever done something like that?

Never and I admire them for it...but I might be wrong so please correct me on this but are vALVE now part or...or linked in some way to the gaming borg collective that is..EA games?

Can't wait till this is released as I'm a huge Portal and Half-Life 2 series fanboi :D

Don't know. The developer gave it "exclusively" to fileplanet. Imho we should respect that and wait in line for free downloads or 24 hours when it's available for all.

I am on the 14th chamber and I have to agree, they are much harder, anyone that hasn't finished the challenges on the original will have a really hard time with this mod. but other then a couple incredibly frustrating attempts, great fun
