I have 2 Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 32MB Cache, they are the loudest thing in my system.

One is a 320 and the other is a 1 TB. I just finished my water cooling case and it's quite, but the hard drives are the loudest thing in the case. Is there any way to keep them quite and fit into this case?

I want to keep the sound down, they don't vibrate, you hear them when they are running or downloading, when they are spinning it can be a bit on the loud side. I don't mind spending money to get them quite, but I'm not spending 80 bucks on this for each drive

I wanted to get more info on these, or is anyone know a good way to keep them quite and still able to fit in my case. I have them in the default spot in the case the second pull out rack with a S flex e with sound gasket in the front to cool it near silent.

Any input would be great

Air, HDs are designed to operate at a certain temp, simply air going past it is well enough (air moving past them is more important when you have multiple stacked as the small layer of air between them will heat up more then if it was open)

Alphacool SilentStar single or dual block.

I highly recommend.

liquid cooling most hard drives will damage them they need to be about 35c and operating in lower temps than 25c wont get most drives properly lubricated, and they are 7W each most of the time

Is any good air enclosures that this won't happen with?

One thing to try,If you have any spare NB or ram heatsinks is
to set them on top of your HDD,s.

Like this.

I'm not certain as to the accuracy of this statement, but i have heard that HDDs like to be around 30 deg C.

I wouldn't bother WC'ing them, unless you really are throwing money out the door...

Good for silencing some super fast noisy suckers like the Cheetah x15 SAS or the Hitachi Ultrastar.

Raptors are a lot less noisy, so its not really necessary.

I have a danger den aqua drive that keeps my hardrives nice and cool with thermal pads.

If I didn't use that, I like this by alphacool

I thought for a while about WC'ing my HDD's. I am running 4 Fujitsu MAX3147RC SAS drives (147GB and 15,000 RPM's) They get hotter than almost any other HDD. However I just got the fan mounts from mountain mods and they seem to be fine.

You can get some good 5.25" mounts that mount the HDD with rubber and help quiet it down and cool it.

I air cool 6 raptors.

If you have a problem with air, you better be running something hotter or have terrible airflow:

Sorry to bust your bubble. But an engineer at seagate i once talked to told me thats the WRONG way to cool your HD. The sides bro, you cool the sides, not the top.

The TOP is airsealed, and insulated. Cooling the TOP wont help jack. :T

I run those 2 fan bottom mount coolers, and my HD's are noticably cooler, i don't think you need much more then that, and a good one is under 10-15smackerzzz

Try something like this (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=199696).

I like my danger den aqua drive, except for one defect, they didn't put the partition line down the center.
Since it takes up two spaces, it's hard to fit in and scratches the delrin.
Anyhow, it keeps my hardrives cool, at 23-24c, but does not silence them.

The heat sinks are hot when i take them off of the HDD,s
So yeah they work just fine.

A tech at Seagate huh.
I was a tech at seagate, I used to build them:rolleyes:

I'd say the two biggest factors are the drive make, and the mounting mechanism. The cooling used on the drive isn't really all that important in terms of noise. As far as the mounting system, I'm rather impressed with the system used in my Lian Li case. There's a couple thumbscrews with rubber grommets threaded on them that you screw onto the drive, then the drive slides into rails to mount it in the case. No metal to metal contact at all so it runs really quite. As for the drive model, I don't know, maybe some of the low RPM seagates or WDs? Whatever you pick is probably going to perform poorer than a louder drive would, so bear that in mind. That being said, I haven't noticed much in the way of noise from my velociRaptor drives, so who knows.

i just finished the inside of my p180, i used the center bay and its silent and keeps them cool with a 120mm yale SL, u just have to make sure that the rubber gromets for the bottom of the drives are tight and lined up properly

They are just loud when they are running, it's not the case it's just the loud drives themself

Must admit, once i bolted my Raptors into an Aquadrive i never looked back on the noise front..........quietened them down no end

Temperature was never really an issue for me personally but more so the noise and a year later with no change i'm still happy.

thank you, im about to redo the loop, i got a kink near the rad exit (getting a bits power 90 fitting) and im going to move my t-line up near the NB since i got shinny bits power im going to show it off

on topic, that 320 should be quiet but the 1TB might not (5 platter drives are loud)

maybe try this

and painting/rebuilding the HD cage helped with sound

Well if you dont mind using a 5.25'' bay you can try this:
http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/hdd/005/sqd1000_detail.html

I'm currently using this with my Seagate 7200.11 1TB drive and its completely silent.
Temps are okay too with a Scythe SFF21E @~600-700rpm blowing directly on to it i get ~35C
