Sense and Sensibility

A Lian-Li V350 build log

Disclaimer:
This build log has absolutely nothing to do with Jane Austen. I hereby apologize to the fans of said author (you know who you are!), but I hope that you will find comfort and solace in whatever I can offer in the pages to come. I will not however, disclose to you yet the reasoning behind the naming convention used. I like some suspense…

*****
Preface:
I’ll be breaking this build log into several sections initially:

Part 1: An introduction to me (For those who are interested)
Part 2: Aims and Objectives
Part 3: System specifications and parts

I’ll handle the rest as it comes; hopefully we can keep it all neat and tidy ;)

I profusely apologize in advance for the sheer volume of text to come; however I feel that it all should be included; as in my humble opinion it will add value immeasurable to the experience forthcoming (both for you and for me!) :)
That being said; if you couldn’t give a rats about me and my background, then skip Part 1 and go straight to Part 2. For the rest of you though; feel free to read on!

In the wonderful words of our very own crazy Peladon: "Thus and so"....

PART 1: An Introduction to me!

Let me (if you will) take the opportunity to fill you in with some background info about myslef ;)

I think most people will agree that being a part of XtremeSystems is a rewarding and often awe-inspiring hobby (or sickness as some describe it!). There are so many talented and just plain nuts people here it’s hard not to be impressed sometimes. My time here has raised my expectations about hardware performance, project creativity, DIY modding and rig building.

My computer aspirations have risen over the years; in the beginning all I wanted was a “high-end” IBM. Then I got into the Dell XPS range. When I discovered Alienware, I thought I had found the holy grail of high-end computing or so to speak :ROTF:.

To be honest I actually can’t remember how I found XtremeSystems. But that’s beside the point, ‘cos I did and here we are! Here in the Asylum I was exposed to the wonderful world of overclocking. I have been like the proverbial sponge, absorbing as much information and advice as I can from all the wonderful residents here ;).

After high school I had earned enough of the good stuff to put together an air-cooled bang-for-buck rig, which has served me well (I’m cringing as I type that) for the past ~2yrs. The specifications of said rig are in my signature below. The experience taught me lots about BIOS settings, system stability (or lack of it) and unfortunately the beauty of the RMA process :(. Definitely a learning experience that I’m sure we all went through once upon a time…

Now we get to the good part! 

My first exposure to watercooling was reading a review of the Corsair Nautilus. That sparked my interest in this crazy hobby. As I delved further into the industry, I began to read reviews of custom WC kits, namely those made by Asetek and Swiftech. Since I joined, my time here at XtremeSystems has opened my eyes to the world of real DIY watercooling, and I can’t get enough of it! My friends don’t understand me; they think I’m crazy:  “Water and electronics don’t go together man…” but I’m pleased to say it hasn’t curbed my enthusiasm in the slightest. The looks of disbelief I get when I tell them that I load at 30 deg C makes it all worthwhile.

The watercooling forum has always been my favourite room in the asylum :p:. I have amassed a folder of saved web pages containing most of the WC builds done here over the past 2-3 years; it’s well over the 1GB mark for size. I like to go back and re-read through all the build logs, commandeering other people’s ideas and planning my next build. I’ve also created a huge gallery with all my favorite WC pics that I browse through when bored. Can I say (if you haven’t already decided) that I’m addicted?

I’ll quickly mention my favourite builds:

• Antec P180B Watercooling by lasse.j5 (one of the first builds that caught my eye here at XS)
• Project TJ07 by ladderman (probably the build I’ve re-read the most times)
• AndyM’s TJ07
• Project X-343B-WC by Mjassbong (purty colours!!! :D)
• Rainmaker by VirtualRain (some simply astounding modding)

And more recently:

• Home Wrecker, Day&Night by evil-98
• Lyl’s V1000 H20
• YAMMS MM H20 by dfo
• Horizontal 343B by Matias23
• Friedchicken’s Murderbox (indeed, all of Charles_h’s work!)

Great stuff guys!

The pros here have inspired me. I prefer not to name names cos I usually forget someone, but I’m going to anyway. Special mention goes to Cathar, Martin, Nikhsub1, Naekuh, Petra, mcoffey, I could go on there’s plenty more. You guys are great and we all appreciate your contribution to these forums. Can I just get all emotional and say that Cathar is my WC hero and I miss him <sniff>  That Storm G7 was gonna be a monster…

<OK pull yourself together already…>

Well, for the two or three people who haven’t fallen asleep yet; there you have the story of my life, well the computer-related bits anyway! <get it?? Wow I’m such a geek :shakes:>
Don’t worry I do have a life…
I hope that’s given you an insight as to where I’m coming from. :)

*****
The next section will cover my aims and objectives for this project.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention – I’ll also explain the reasoning behind the naming of this build. There’s method in the madness. Somewhere…

PART 2: Aims and Objectives

I’d just like to begin by saying that this build is full of compromises, so please do not think me a hypocrite. Let me explain…

Sense and Sensibility. I find that by spending so much time on XtremeSystems I get can a bit carried away by the hardware I see others working with. For instance, person X (aka Naekuh, but he’s just the first of many that spring to mind) builds a rig with a $1000+ quadcore, Tri-SLi (or quad X-Fire), six raptors in RAID 0 and a 1200W PSU (don’t even mention skulltrail), and I start thinking “I have to have that. Anything less will not be sufficient” when all I really use my PC for is Uni work, movies, photos and the occasional game. Having said that I do run a 20” Widescreen at 1680x1050 and play some taxing games like WiC and CoH, so I do need some reasonable processing power. But the key word there is reasonable. Sense and Sensibility.

So; in this build will attempt to buy hardware that meets my needs, with some reasonable headroom and future-proofing of course! :p:

Here are my aims for the project:

• Must be quiet, near silent if possible. I currently run a CM 650W Extreme PSU with the fan stuck at 100% rpm. Before I went WC, I used to have a Zalman 9500 on the CPU, sounded like a jet sometimes. The HD4870 sounds like a hair-dryer!
• Must be stable. I’ve had some nightmares with my current rig, most of which can be traced back to the nVidia 650i chipset . Stupid thing won’t run two dimms of RAM, so I’m stuck with 1GB. It doesn’t play nice with ATi cards either…
• Must be cool. It can get warm down here in OZ, especially in the summer where it can get to the mid 30’s indoors (no AC for me ). The WC will help here.
• Will have watercooling: But of course ;). This is where I depart completely from the build theme, but I couldn’t care less, after all this is XS isn’t it!

*****
In my next post I will outline the details of the rig with regards to

• Parts/specs and purchases
• WC loop configuration

And i promise i'll put some pictures up, cos i know your all about to lynch me for making you read all this text!

Edit: Here's a sneak peak!

PART 3: System Specs and Parts
Ok let’s get down and dirty with the nitty gritty details and specs!

Core Specs:

Case: Lian Li V350 mATX cube
PSU: Corsair HX620
Processor: Intel E8600
Motherboard: DFI JR-P45 T2Rs
RAM: 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066MHz
Graphics: ATi HD4870 512MB
HDD: 640GB WD6400AAKS
Optical: Pioneer SATA DVDRW
OS: Vista Home Premium 64bit

• Case: Recently I got all psyched up about Charles_h’s TJ07 MurderMod builds (check ‘em out here – it’s gotta be the most impressive build I’ve ever seen: http://www.xtremesystems.org/Forums/showthread.php?t=187306), but eventually realized I couldn’t afford to spend $600+ on a case. I love the Lian Li 343B cube, but can’t afford that either (shipping to OZ is $180 min). I’m not overly enchanted by the MM range, bit too industrial for my tastes but functional none-the-less (again shipping brings these to around $600). So I was left with a bit of a dilemma, a rather big one actually. For me, the case is the part that really needs to be right, after all it’s the part that I have to look at 24/7. So I needed a solution.
That solution came in the form of some timely inspiration from evilvision and his SG-02 SFF build. No longer did I have to splash out on Nehalem (which I don’t need) just to fill a big case (which wouldn’t fit anywhere in my room); I could have great-quality components in a compact package that would meet my needs for a good year or three to come. I started looking at SFF cases, and decided on the V350, the most refined of the offerings. First up some pics of the exterior:

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000015.jpg

And now a few with the side panels starting to come off
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000024.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000023.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000029.jpg

I will have my work cut out for me trying to fit everything in there, but with the PA120.3 (and possibly the res & pump too) mounted outside the case I’m almost certain I can pull it off. Wish me luck! :D

• CPU: Intel’s recent E8600, complete in its E0 stepping glory! These things have been doing some insane clocks; I can’t wait to see how this one goes!

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000986.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000988.jpg

Confession!: I nearly went AMD on this build. It was one of those things where head triumphed over heart in the end (thankfully). My heart said “AMD CPUs are far more elegant, the design makes sense and the lack of NB means one less heat-producing component (and thus one less water block)”. However sense and sensibility prevailed in the end, my head chiming in with a decisive “Deep down you know that Intel is the better option. You will be able to clock that Penryn sky-high, there’s no comparison once 4GHz+ is reached. Stop being silly and invest in the better solution”. Head = 1, heart = nil. :D

• Mobo: The baby DFI P45 has been pounding it’s bigger brothers for FSB clocks, it’s cracked 685MHz FSB here recently and seems to do 500MHz FSB on quads regularly. For an mATX board it’s packed to the gills with goodies, most noticeable being the full-scale P45 chipset. A 4-phase hybrid PWM, solid caps all round and 2 PCI-E slots all make for one little mobo with a big punch! I’ll be WC’ing the CPU, NB and GPU; more pics on that later. First some nekkid shots :yepp:

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000993.jpg

The pure white box promises many good things!

Just look at that CPU socket area. Exquisite!

To tell you the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth; I'm actually using a P.O.S. HP 4.1MP point & shoot. Without any decent light it can't take a good pic to save it's life. That's why all my photography is done outdoors. And usually in good sunlight.

I'm relieved that you guys like the pics, i really can't afford a DSLR at this stage.

Yeah i've got the backplate on order. Actually i ordered it from Flabbergast over a month ago, and there's no sign of it so far. FB had a change of ownership, and it's taking some time for orders to be processed and new stock to be ordered...

When will we find out the meaning behind the name?

Will the Hero's epic struggle against the tyranny of evil (not our evil-98) come in act 2 or 3?

Ok, update time!

PART 4: The Watercooling gear

- EK Supreme
- EK FC-4870 Nickel
- DDC3.2 + Petra's Top
- Swiftech MCRES or EK Res 250/100
- PA120.3 w/Scythe S-FLEX F in pull
- Koolance 3/8in ID 1/2in OD Compressions
- 3/8in ID 1/2in OD: Primoflex Pro-LRT clear OR Feser One UV orange

• CPU Block: I’m using the supreme because I already own one. If I was buying a CPU clock now, I’d probably grab a Fusion V2 or GTZ because I’ll be running a 3-WB loop. But alas, the supreme will have to do. Don’t get me wrong, the block is amazing, i really like the look and it will be more than capable of cooling my parts. More on flow rates soon…
As some of the parts are still in use,
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000033.jpg
I'm uising some recycled pics from my current open-desk build. I hope you don't mind :D

Here's my Supreme in pieces. I've got an acetal top on the way, direct from Eddy himself!
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/EK_diss_775_box.jpg

And all put together:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/EK_775_box.jpg

Is it just me or does the base curve the wrong way?
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/EK_finger_bow.jpg

• PA120.3: The King of Cool! It seems the obvious choice. <Shuuush!!! Who said 480GTX?!!! Show your face now if you dare!!!> . I like to run my S-Flex’s at 1000rpm, so I do think the PA is the right rad for the job . And besides, I already have one from my previous open-desk build. With the E8600, P45 NB and HD4870 all in the one loop I’ll be pushing at 350 watts under load, so hopefully the PA will still give some decent air-water deltas.

Just one quickie ;)
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/PA_BP.jpg

• Fittings: I actually have two sets of compression fittings, both 3/8in ID. The Koolance ones are 1/2in OD, the BP’s are 5/8in OD. I have 10 feet of Pro-LRT tubing in both sizes. At this stage I’m gonna go the small-OD option, I think it’ll be better suited to the small case, but we’ll wait and see .

Now, here's a suspicious looking box! I wonder what could be inside...
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000034.jpg

Lots of plastic bags and tubing! :D
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000037.jpg
All the tubing is Primochill 3/8in ID. Closest is the Pro-LRT in 5/8in OD, middle is the yucky silicon 1/2in OD and furthest away is the replacement Pro-LRT in 1/2in OD. I'm sure you can make out the rest of the stuff well enough...

Now let me show you some special parts i have, and what i plan on doing with them:

As previously stated (if not bleedingly obvious), the PA will be mounted outside the case, most likely on the underside of my desk (I’ll have to rig up a bracket of sorts). I’m not sure yet whether the res & pump will fit inside, but at this stage that is my intention. To pass the tubes out the back of the case i bought this clever thing (from our favorite mfgr of course):
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000038.jpg
Also in the pic are some of the fittings i will be using in this build. Also made by koo....., you know who ;).

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000040.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000041.jpg

My original idea was to have two ball-valves on the PCI bracket, then two BP D-plugs, Thus forming a psuedo-quick-disconnect. Here's what it would have looked like:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000061.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000062.jpg

But it got a bit long, and would extend too far out the back of the case for it to be practical, so i found another use for it instead... I call it the Kool-Power 3/8in OD handgun, check it out:

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000063.jpg
POW! Look out all WC gremlins!:rofl:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000064.jpg

Lol. Anyway so i had to change plans slightly. I switched thinking from disconnects to a drain valve. Now it look like this:

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000065.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000067.jpg

What do you guys reckon? Think it'll work?

This post is already far too long, so i'm gonna finish up and start another with pics of the wb's.

The EK supreme didn't look to bad from the top, but here's what the base fins looked like after removing the accelerator plate:

Absolutely filthy! I've no idea what those little things are, but you can bet your house on one thing:

I will never, ever again use UV dye.

Here's all the parts after a good scrub in near-boiling water.
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000098.jpg

And just as a side note, I spent most of Saturday night flushing the blue crap out of the rad. I think i did it 15 times and the water still comes out blue :(.
I know it's not recommended anymore, but would a quick (like 5min) dose of vinegar in the rad help to remove the gunk? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Right. Before i finish up, here's one last pic of my old PC. Notice the Xtreme CPU cooler i'm using!

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000103.jpg
Idle temps went from 20 to 46 deg C, i quickly down-clocked to 2.4GHz (from 3.05GHz) and i'm now sitting at a balmy 37 deg idle. After 20mins of OCCT it loads at 57 deg C.

I can't wait to get back on water! Watercooling........FTW!

Can't say the same for that tubing and gunk in the supreme - glad you were able to clean it all up.

In regards to the rad I am not sure about that - wasnt there a lot of talk on this lately and the general consensus was not to use vinegar ever?

Whatever you do I am looking forward to seeing this all come together:up:

People should stick to FESER cooling fluid. It's got UV in it and it's awesome, won't tint anything and prevents corrosion even with ALU+CU loops. As for the worklog, good job, keep it up!

FYI that was Feser stuff. Admittedly it was the dye (as opposed to the pre-mix), but pretty much the same thing once mixed with plain distilled H20.

Twwen2,

Rig up your garden hose to therad. Somehow. Just do it.

Use pressurized water jets (stand away, and don't spray anyone :) ) The radiator will clean itself very quickly.

And then do your usual distilled water rinse.

I make full use of my garden hose. In fact, I use the same pressure washer that I use to wash my cars (but I don't recommend that you do that).

I'm telling you. Distilled water. Nothing else. no PT Nuke, no Pentosin, no Zerex. Nothing. With colour comes headaches.

Right. So let me get this straight. Should i just hook the hose up to the inlet and run the water through the rad at household pressure? Or are you suggesting that i somehow have a pressure jet as well? How would that work?

I'm pretty sure IanY means two things:

1. Use tap pressure to flush your rad (tap pressure is more than a D5 I'd think) or you could...
2. Use a pressure washer etc (if available but not recommended).

twwen2 I'm confused is the loop you setup what you had been running for a while or was that new liquid mix?

Only reason I ask is i have had distilled and Fesser Clear/UV in my loop for a couple of months and found no gunk in my blocks this weekend when I took it apart. Is it possible that this was just stuff from your rad?

Just wondering thats all.

Sweet looking build and photos.

That loop was the one i have been running on my desk for the last 2-3 months, with the parts in my sig.

Were you using the pre-mix or dye? I've got a feeling that the pre-mix is mixed better and is more resistant to separation. It could well have been some stuff from the rad, but it looks a bit too blue for that imo...

1) Will photobucket throw a hissie fit and ruin my log? What's the deal with bandwidth limits and such?

1) I used photobucket for my worklog, plus other stuff, and never had any BW issues.
2) 800x600 is ok, 1024x768 is usually a good size IMO, fits well on my monitor without being overpowering, but no larger for ease of use and other people's computers. Don't go smaller than 800x600 though please :)

Part 5 - Interlude

***Just before we take a break to divert for a moment, i've place my final order at PPCs this morning, so that should arrive late next week.***

A few of you know about my other passion/hobby. For those who don't, i'm a biker. I've got an '88 Kawasaki ZXR250 which i've had for just under a year now. I particularly enjoy riding up in the ranges, we've got some nice roads up in the local hills.;)

However, just two weeks ago i had my first real accident. I mean i've dropped the bike whilst stationary before, but never a real off.

Anyhow here's what happened:
I was in the left lane at the lights, behind about 5 cars. At the front in the right lane was a big truck...
The lights went green, and we moved off. I was in no hurry, happily traveling amongst the rest of the traffic.
So we pulled out of the intersection, accelerating up to about 40km/h. The right lane was stuck behind the truck, who was struggling to reach 20kn/h . I was still speeding up on my way to 50km/h (still behind the other cars), and was passing the cars in the right lane. Just as i was about to pass the truck, the car behind the truck decided she wasn't going to wait anymore, and swung out into my lane, into me!

So i braked and swerved; those who have ridden before know that those two maneuvers are mutually exclusive (you do one or the other, never both simultaneously). I lowsided and rolled into the gutter where i watched my nike slide ~15m down the road. I was cringing as i watched the bike crumble, bits of plastic flying out from underneath.

To cut a long story short, i got up and with the help of some guys who saw the whole thing and stopped to help we pushed the bike up onto the footpath. I was ok, mainly shock but my knee was a mess. The lady stopped and came back, we exchanged details and she left.

Our conversation:
Her: "Are you OK?"
Me: "I'm ok, a bit shaken"
Her: "What happened?"
Me: "You nearly ran me over"
Her: "OMG! I had my indicator on though!"
Me: " SO!!!? I was next to you!"
Her: "But your bike can accelerate twice as fast as my car..."
Me: "That's got nothing to do with it!?"
Her (in a lower vioce): "I'm sorry, i didn't see you there"
Me: "Obviously :shakes:"

She doesn't think she's at fault cos she didn't actually hit me (thanks to my sweet ninja reflexes). But i've got the law on my side, and a signed witness statement to boot!

Here's some pics of the damage:
The bike fell and slid on it's left side.

Cheers,
I can honestly say, that while this incident was an accident; based on what i've seen some people really are out to kill us bikers. I'm talking about people lining me up at T intersections, waiting for me to get close enough and then pulling out right into me. I'm talking about those jerks in the BMW X5's and Suby WRX's that jump on my tail when i pass them and try to get as close to my rear wheel as they can. I've lost count.

The biggest problem is awareness. Car drivers just don't look for motorbikes, they don't register in their limited existence. :shakes:

In other news my last order at PPCs has been shipped. I'm not telling what's in it, you'll find out when it gets here. As soon as my backplate for the supreme gets in from flabbergast i'll be in business.

Here in OZ bikers are treated like common criminals by Mr Plod. We are targeted by police with all sorts of bizarre tactics, and are assumed guilty until proven innocent.

In my state (Victoria) it's even worse. We have a draconian system where the law is made and ammended to protect people from themselves. Political correctness gone too far i tell you.
Get caught breaking the limit by 2km/h? That's a $150 fine and 3 demerit points, thankyou very much. My speedometer is only factory calibrated to +/- 10% by law, yet the cops can book you for breaking the limit by 1%!

Our speed cameras are hidden out of view, they generate millions in revenue each year for the state government, with no real impact on reducing the road toll (possibly made things worse as people now watch their speedos instead of the road). Just recently the police started dressing up in camo and hiding in the bushes with their radar guns up at the black spur (favourite road for bikers).

I'm becoming increasingly dissolusioned with my country and the direction our government (particularly local) is taking.

twenn2 nice bike. Sorry to hear about the accident I had heaps of accidents on my moped when I lived in holland (it was like a 80cc dirt bike but with a 50cc engine) 85km/hr aint shabby! (but rather crazy with dodgy drum brakes).

I've been procrastinating for 6 months now after selling my SS ute to downsize and get a motorbike but haven't gotten the lessons yet. I will make the call tomorrow and take my learners permit test next week. you have inspired me even after your accident just glad it wasnt any worse and hope you get it all covered by insurance.

emu

Drum brakes....!!!! That can't be good, let alone safe :p:

Haha check that i've inspired someone! I'm humbled and honoured :yepp:

Motorbikes are starting to make economical sense, they use much less fuel than a car, are softer on the emissions and cut travel times significantly. Plus they're a hell of a lot of fun! :D

ain't that the truth!
but i'm too old to learn to ride a motorbike and it's too expensive to own a car here.

Haha pics are incoming tonight, stay tuned!!!

I saw a solicitor last Thursday, they are gonna handle the whole thing for me. The university runs a community legal clinic where final-year law students act under the supervision of a qualified solicitor. It's part of their degree, and as a community service it's free! :D Until we go to court that is...

I had an interview with one of the students and he said that the clinic would deal with the other party, all i needed to do was give them all the details, repair quotes and they'll do all the hard work. I honestly couldn't believe my luck when i found out it wasn't gonna cost me a cent! :yepp:

Boys will be boys: Rad cleaning

Another little update. This one will make IanY proud! :D

As most of you know, my rad got gunked up with F1 dye, and unlike my pump and blocks cannot be dismantled for cleaning. IanY suggested that i hook it up to the garden hose and blast it. So on Sunday morning, that's exactly what we did...

Me and a uni mate got up to a bit of mischief, but i was stoked with the results. Have a look and enjoy.

First thing i did was to melt my 7/16 Masterkleer and stretch it over the tap fitting. It barely went on, just look at the stretch in the pic below!
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000174.jpg
But on it went, with a handy worm-drive clamp making sure it won't be coming off in a hurry!

The other end was attatched to the PA like so:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000176.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000177.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000178.jpg

After triple-checking the barbs and tubing, we turned the tap on...
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000180.jpg
Just look at those biceps! I really should hit the gym sometime soon lol

Little by little, the pressure was turned up:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000181.jpg

Now it was really fizzing!
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000182.jpg

As per the title, our immature minds couldn't resist a little... C'mon, it was just asking for it yeah?
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000183.jpg
Ahh, that feels better!

Now the aussies here will know that we're still on stage 3 water restrictions. Pretty much that means no watering lawns or gardens by hose. There are some exceptions, but what we were doing was definitely not allowed!:p:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000184.jpg
That should help the lawn a bit...

And one last one with the rad draining:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000185.jpg

I had a look into the PA through the inlets, and there is still blue in there. But i figure that anything that has the potential to come loose already has. I'm telling you we let rip with that tap! :ROTF:

There's another off-topic update inbound, it'll be up as soon as my mate puts the photos on facebook. Until then...

twwen2,

Good job on the flushing. I'm proud of you.

Normally, I would prescribe what works for me, but I don't want to put you through unnecessary risk. I use a power washer on all my rads, but I'm worried about you damaging your pA120.3. My TCs have not been damaged on low settings on the power washer (its gas engined power lol) and I use that setting to blast my car wheels clean of brake dust, especially after a hard romp on a rainy day.

The outdoor tap should be plenty powerful for you. No sense being an egotistical hero (aka moron) like me :p:

twwen2
09-23-2008, 09:47 PM
Lol that power washer sounds like fun!

There's still a blue film inside the rad which won't come off, it's really annoying me actually. However after that tap blast and about 15 rinses with boiling water, whatever is coming out has already come out. I think the blue film is there to stay...:(

In better news, i recieved notification today that my backplate for the EK Supreme has been shipped, finally! Expect some decent updates later this week.

Update week!

I thought i might do a quick mockup using the mobo tray, with the intention a getting the rig up and runnning on air so i could intall Vista. Sadly, that won't be happening anytime soon thanks to the designers at DFI

Check it out:

Now one with the cooler sitting on the CPU. Those of you with a keen eye will notice that the push-pins aren't actually down. The stock intel cooler actually hits the NB cooler (also stock), ensuring that there will be no air-cooled action. What was DFI thinking...?

Oh well i guess this rig will be a pure WC one, never to see the air of day... man that was lame

Mt Buller '08

I've been at the snow this last weekend, or what was left of it anyway.:D Myself and a group of friends decided last-minute to pack the cars and head to Mt Buller for a Sunday/Monday overnighter. We traveled up on the Sunday afternoon, spent the evening at a ski resort in Mansfield; drinking beer and champagne and sitting around in the spa just chatting. The next morning we got up early, and after a buffet brekky we drove up the mountain and hit the slopes! Because it is now springtime down here, there's not as much snow as during the peak season, but still plenty enough to have a day's worth of skiing/boarding. Enjoy the pics!

Two of my crazy mates, Nick (left) and Pete (right). We had just finished cooking ourselves dinner.
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Buller%202008/n740258522_1385614_9239.jpg

Unloading the cars up on the mountain. We parked in the day carkpark and caught the shuttle bus up to the village. I'm adjusting my headgear, second from the right.

Fan wire soldering: Burnt fingers and other fun stuff!

This has been done before, but i thought i'd show how i went about it. The pictures speak for themselves, but essentially all i did was to snip the last connector off, solder it to the middle fan's wire, then snip that connector off and solder to the end wire.

That was very badly worded, so just look at the pictures. :p:

The first cut

All finished. Notice that i forgot to shrink one of the wires before i soldered it. I have to get my hands on some black electrical tape to clean it up. :(

Perfect!! Thanks for the soldering/splicing pics. I had a general idea how to do it, but your step by step photos really help. Now I know the sequence to put sleeving here, shrink here, then solder, then sleeve, etc.

How did you strip the fan wires in the middle like this??

Yeah that was a PITA. I used the wire stripper to cut the insulation at each end, then used a razor blade to remove the insulation in between the two cuts. It was a bit fiddly but it seemed to work.

Sure thing. My first impressions are:
- looks great, especially under UV.
- is quite stiff. others may disagree, but it's definitely much stiffer than the masterkleer and Pro-LRT that i also own.

Great Work...

I sure do wish we had mountains in Texas, oh well, that's why God made Coloado, so Texans would have a place to ski...

Fans and more Sleeving

The Lian Li V350 has 3 internal fans, two intake 120mm and one exhaust 80mm. They are black ball-bearing, fast and loud. Naturally they must be swapped out for something more appropriate! :D

The new fans are these:
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69&products_id=24114
They have orange UV-reactive blades and 4 white LEDs in the corners. They fit in great with the "orange and black" theme.

Here's my trusty workbench with everything laid out
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69&products_id=24114

We'll start with the stock 80mm fan

About to be attached with a trick sound dampener
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000233.jpg

Then i got to work on the 120mm fans. They are held in a cage of sorts, the pictures make things pretty clear i hope. :)

I've been lusting after some blingy fans like those xigmateks (or noiseblocker/gelid/nanoxia) for a while now, which doesn't make ANY sense since I already have brand new S-Flex's. You're not helping...:( Are there any performance tests for these newer fans?

Good work twwen2! It's looking good, the fans will make a nice addition! I sleeved most of my ugly cables today. Still not to happy on my case. I'm having a look at some full towers.
Keep giving the fans more of what they want! More updates! Are you showing the problematic case design photos?

Sorry bro, i couldn't resist myself. They're orange, which fits the build theme perfect. Malik has been using them too, they look great under UV. I've no idea what the fans perform like, i've got S-Flex F's on my rad and they're great. The orange ones will only serve as in-case airflow, so as long as i can't hear them on the controller i don't really care how they perform. :D

Parts underwater, well not quite yet...

A few evenings ago i felt compelled to tackle the GPU. :D
Most people comment in their logs that taking the graphics card(s) apart is the scariest thing they have to do, i can testify to that! Usually the GPU is the most expensive part in the build, so it makes for nervous times. :p:

Now i've taken a few stock coolers off in my time, but none as large and heavy as this one. I'm pleased to say it went well. :)

Stock card
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000203.jpg

All screws taken out and cooler removed
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000205.jpg

EK full-cover block installed. Sorry i was concentrating so hard on the removal and installation of the block i forgot to take any other pics of the process. But most people are familiar with the deal, and the end pics are nice too.
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000208.jpg

Ok, as you can see, the card is still gonna take up two slots in the mobo tray thanks to the double-width PCI bracket. But i need all four available slots, so the bracket must go. But what can i replace it with...?

Koolance to the rescue!!!

Yep, that's right, koolance make a single-slot bracket for Radeon cards. It's actually for the x1900 series, but ATi haven't changed their DVI port arrangement since.

The old and new brackets
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000212.jpg

New bracket installed
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000214.jpg
Walla!

I decided to install my CPU and NB blocks while i was in the mood...:ROTF:

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000252-1.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000254-1.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000258.jpg

I almost couldn't get the Supreme on. With the EK backplate installed under the mobo, the screws weren't quite long enough to allow me to screw the top nuts down. However i persevered, and after much cussing and pain i got them all on:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000259.jpg

Here's one of my favourite pics so far:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM100272.jpg

Now in my jubilation i whacked the GPU into the mobo and went to slide it into the case to take some happy snaps, and to my dismay i found this:

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000252.jpg

Yep, that's right. Your eyes do not deceive you. The GPU block is too tall to slide the mobo tray in. DAAMIT!

"oh well", i hear you say, "you'll just have to install the card once the tray is in the case." Unfortunately it's not that simple. The internal HDD cage is the same height as the offending bar, and so card won't actually ever fit int the case!

So in my desperation last night, i decided to do some Xtremely noob case modding. Hey, everyone has to start somewhere! :p:

First to go was the HDD cage. Removing that involved drilling out the rivets that attach it to the case frame.
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000269.jpg

Then i grabbed my trusty hacksaw and attacked the frame:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000274.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000273.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000270.jpg

Now the card will slide in nicely :)
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000275.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000276.jpg

Unfortunately removing part of the frame has weakened the structural integrity of the case, but i found that once the mobo tray was installed with its thumbscrews it held together nicely. It's wasn't gonna fall apart or anything, but i could tell the frame was a little weaker. I'm not really worried about it, it's not like i'll be sitting on the case anytime soon...!:p:

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000277.jpg

Here's a few more shots of the mobo & GPU inside the case. The pictures demonstrate just how much room i have to work with.

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000278.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000283.jpg

Here's a good side-on perspective
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000284.jpg

And a few more arty shots:

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000285.jpg

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000286.jpg

That's it for tonight folks. I'm quite pleased with my progress so far, and am almost ready to install everything and plumb the tubing runs etc. Unfortunately for you guys, i'm going away with my family this next week, and so there will be no more updates until Friday at the earliest. Sorry for the delay, but one must live a family life too :D

Thanks once again for reading, i hope you guys are still enjoying the log.

That's a very valid question.

The 4870 is gonna be in the furthermost PCI-E slot, so on the far right of that picture. I'd hope that the tubing could be pushed down to clear the frame. Note that this would only be an issue when i want to slide the mobo tray in or out of the case. In both these scenarios the loop would be dry/drained, thus reducing the risk of a leak due to my fiddling/pushing on the tubes.

However, if worst comes to worst i'll just have to install the card with the tray already in the case. I'll see how i go.;)

Thanks for ruining my evening! :(:p:

***Ok guys, just a little heads up***

As you can tell, i'm back from my little holiday. Tonight i thought i would set up the tubing runs and get that all sorted. Well it turns out that the Feser tubing is too stiff and thin-walled to be able to make the bends i wanted, so i'mma have to re-think my layout. This might mean cutting some more holes in the case, specifically the mobo tray, just above the I/O shield.

In the meantime i have requested some replacement rotary fittings from BP, my RMA has been received and they said they'd let me know when the replacements are available. I've no idea how long that will take, most likely a few weeks. I was just gonna use the rotaries anyway, but once i installed them i could actually see them starting to separate under the stress, so i'm not gonna take that risk.

Here's to waiting paitently... :toast:

The bend wasn't a really tight one, but a short section between two 45 degree barbs. The fittings were a bit too close together, which pinched the tubing i think. I'll see if i can get a pic or three to demonstrate.

Some good news: I got an email from BP this morning and my replacement barbs are about to be sent. YAY :D

I too had a connection I needed to make that was pretty close. I was originally going to use two 45 degree barbs but ended up going with two 90 degree barbs. Think something like that might work?

Need moar airflow = Further nasty hacking of beautiful Lian Li case

Ok so here's the deal.
The case has two internal 120mm intake fans, which i've replaced (a few pages back). Also inside is an 80mm exhaust fan, also replaced with a more suitable candidate straight outa blingville.

The 80mm exhaust fan is mounted on a perforated aluminium plate, shown in the pic below:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000228.jpg
As can be seen, there is probably more metal than perforation.:p:
A quick power-on test confirmed my fears, most of the air bounces back off the plate and is returned into the case. The grill is just too restrictive.:shakes:

So naturally something had to be done. Out to the shed!
Out came my trusty drill, hacksaw and metal file(s). I started by drilling some holes in each corner . I then used the hacksaw to cut between the holes, then finished the job off with a combination of files.

Here's a shot off the plate just before i put it all back together:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000323.jpg

Fan mounted on the plate
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000328.jpg

And the business side. I re-used the stock Lian Li fan guard (originally internal) to act as an external guard (but really to hide my awful cutting skills :ROTF:).
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000325.jpg
I'm actually quite pleased with the results! :)

The wait continues on the BP fittings. Give it a week and i reckon i'll be good to go :yepp:

Update Time!

Well since we're all still waiting on the replacement BP rotary fittings, i decided to start installing some other components into the case. I started with the DVD and HDD, eventually finding a combination that works.

The Scythe fan controller slots in the other side, and helps to neaten things up.
Next to go in was the PSU. Man i'm running out of room already!

Just see for yourelves...

There is actually a small gap between the mobo tray and the fan plate, large enough for me to pass some cables out. Pump molex & rpm, rad fans and temp sensor.

And now the wait continues...

And lastly a shot of the case in position! This will be it's home for the next year or so. The EK res may well end up in that exact position, i'll have to experiment:

Those D-plugs on the rad, they're friction fit? You're not worried about...you know...the rad falling over and the fittings pulling loose?

twwen2
10-13-2008, 12:53 AM
Yes they're only held together by the force of the o-rings against the wall of the female plug. Thankfully that force is large!

The rad won't be falling over anytime soon, as can be seen in the pic it is bolted to the side of the desk. ;)

Edit: Then again, the pic is so bad i don't blame you for missing it. In fact i wouldn't be surprised if i'm the only one who can see it! :ROTF:

Ah yes, you see i have a ducted heating vent under the desk, so the whole area under there is nice and warm in winter. Not quite the location for the rad, i'm sure you'll agree! By having it on the outside, it doesn't suck any warm air.

I thought i better clarify something. A few have made comments to the tune of "why didn't you mount the rad on the case". I completely understand that this being a SFF case, people presume it to be a LAN build. However this is not the case! (sorry, that was real lame)
I have never been to a LAN and probably won't in the forseeable future, so the case will most likely never have to move. Thus, portability is not a concern. Hopefully that clears things up somewhat.

twwen2's hacking of precious Lian-Li case continues...

You guys should remember from a few pages back that i removed the HDD cage. I then mounted the HDD in one of the drive bays using a Scythe barcket some of you are familiar with.

However unbeknown to me, the bracket actually stopped the drive-bay cover from installing properly. This meant that when i put the case side panel back on, there would be an ugly gap.

So i had to do some more metalwork! :D

Here's the HDD installed in the bay. Note my sweet MS paint skills!

Well, firstly i can whole-heartedly reccomend the Primochill Pro-LRT. I have the 3/8 x 5/8 clear stuff, so the bend radius is as good as its gonna get. It really is great stuff.

The feser tubing is not up to scratch i'm afraid. I have the 3/8 x 1/2 in orange, and it's just horrible. It's stiff, kinks easy and is just nasty to work with. Now before you go and say "that's cos it's thin wall", i also have some Pro-LRT in the same dimensions and it's miles better. A world of difference i assure you. It will still kink if you push it far enough, but it's soooooo much better than the feser stuff.

I'll try to get some pictures up for you.

A new EK res!

In the previous pics i've shown my EK-RES 250. I was gonna put it on top of the case, mounted horizontally. However i really would prefer to mount it vertically, i understand it makes the bleeding process much simpler.
The problem is that the 250 is just so long that it puts too much weight on the pump bracket and mobo tray, plus it sticks out above the top of the case and looks ugly.

So obviously there was only one solution... Buy another smaller res!!!

But what about the 250? Well i couldn't just let it sit around, so i sold it too Switch8, my mate. He bought it off me for the price of my new EK-RES 100, which i got from flabbergast for $48AUD, the last one in stock!!! :D

It will still kink if you push it far enough, but it's soooooo much better than the feser stuff.

I'll try to get some pictures up for you.

great info bro. thanks so much.
the only issue i have now with using colored tubes - the res! hahaha. thought about car tint... or put a led in there somewhere...

The Finale!

I never thought i would get to say this, but

THE BP RMA HAS ARRIVED!!!

This means i can (and already have) finish this build. :D

The final stages of the project were fairly straightforward, i just had to:

- Measure, cut and install the tubing
- Fill and bleed the loop
- Connect all PSU cables
- etc

However i still managed to run into trouble, even this late in the piece...:shakes: You'll see what i mean soon.

First up the tubing goes in, courtesy of BP's rotary 45s!

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000382.jpg

And now the pump and res. Can anyone spot my stupid mistake...?:ROTF:
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000388.jpg
Yep, i mounted the pump so that it directly blocked the PSU cable plug. Yep, i had to rip everything apart, pull everything out so i could drill two more holes and move the UN bracket along a bit.

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc346/wentworthmeister/Build%20Log/IM000385.jpg

Now with some distilled water and a drop of PT Nuke, the sole UV CCFL is turned on...

And last but not least, the case sides go back on, and the project is complete!

Well i guess that wraps it up!
Thanks all for reading, i truly appreciate all the enthusiasm, advice and attention from everyone.

Now, of course i'll continue to add bits and pieces to this log, i've gotta tranfser my HDTV card over from the previous rig, and there's overclocking to be done, but of course!:D

4GHz........here..........we.............come!

Hey I remember one of my dumb moments. I attached my fans to the front panel and then realised that I should have attached the rad first. So on goes the rad and the fans were then attached but then the rad couldn't fit through the space. So I had to attach everything pretty much in the case which took me a lot more time, not to mention all the time wasted.

Well, you asked for it!

But i won't pretend that i don't enjoy the attention either...:p:

These pics are 1000 times better, i used a pseudo-tripod (box on top of chair) for all the shots. As you can see they come out nice and sharp.

I actually took about 20 nice ones, then went to re-size them and lost a lot of detail in the process. They turned out looking like those disgusting JPEGs you see sometimes in 16bit color...

Being pretty upset, i ripped the sides off the case and took another 20 shots, but these ones are even better than the previous set!
