Cooler Master 1250 PSU

CoolerMaster has greatly been known for their quantum leaps into the cooling industry. It’s fair to say they are preparing to take over yet another aspect of the computer industry.

CoolerMaster has begun production on some of the world’s best power supplies. Today’s review will be on the CoolerMaster 1250watt Real Power Pro.

Packaging

When you first open the box you will notice that the PSU is packaged very securely with almost a full inch of protection on all sides. The PSU unit itself has a great compact design. And all the cables are neatly packed together.

Remove the PSU and look around the box, you'll find a few goodies. Aside from the four thumb screws, this PSU comes with a case badge and a bottle opener.

Features

Once you get the PSU out and get the wires all out, you'll notice the wires seem so long you could run this PSU in a separate room of your house. You will also get a good feel for the quality of this product by just how much it weighs.

Another thing that will be drawn to your attention is the 135mm fan. You know you have got yourself a silent monster in a very small package when you see this beauty. It’s merely a single inch longer than most other inferior PSU's at only 7” in length. But oh boy does it pack a punch. Weighing in at 8 pounds you won’t be tossing this thing around like a football in the office!

After getting everything all spread out, it’s easy to see that it would have been a good idea to make this a modular PSU, especially at the price you will be paying for one of these. There is a heap of cables and because they’re not modular, you really got to take a minute or maybe an hour whilst putting your system together, to tidy all the unused cables into a corner.

The honey comb cut pattern exhaust covers as much of the rear as possible. This ensures that the heat can freely exit out of the PSU, and that there are no dead spots without sufficient airflow. You'll notice that the plug is not standard. I don't like this because if something happens to the cable and you have to replace it, you'd have to get this specific style. One thing I think is great about this is its input voltage is 90~264V and is auto switching. This means no more worrying about selecting 110V or 220V.

Specifications

Just a quick look at the factory specs as previewed on the box.

Ease of Installation

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb243/biglipzit/Coolermaster%201250%20PSU/picture8watermarked.jpg

This I took to show again just how many cables there really are. Remember, this is a pretty plain-Jain full tower. I was really worried there wasn't going to be enough space to hide everything. Installation was pretty straight forward. You might want to wear gloves though, this PSU has that “finger print magnet” finish. But in the end, it looks beautiful.

I was able to stuff all the extra cables into the space above the 5.25” drive bays. Had to use twine, rubber bands and tie straps, but I got it all in there. I was so worried I wouldn't be able to hide it all because the individual wires are very stiff. They used high quality thick gauged wire. Good for high demand systems. Another nice thing about these thick wires is that you can bend them and they stay pretty much in position. But this makes for a difficult task of cable management.

Performance

Test System:

Intel Q6600 quad core cpu
Asus Striker 2 Formula
2 gigs of DDR2
2 DVD Burners
3 Hard drive disks ; 160GB, 120GB, 80GB 7200rpm
Dual 7800GTX in SLI
Supreme FXII sound card
2 12" Cold cathode tubes
5 130mm fans
4 120mm fans
Fan Controller

This power supply was phenomenal. It is dead silent and rated at 80+ efficiency. It betters that and averages out at 85% efficiency. The testing was done with the psu off, during idle and loaded using prime 95 and crunching with World Community Grid.

My system wasn't anywhere near being able to load up this power supply to what it is truly capable of but it had no problem and proved that it could handle anything I could throw at it.

Overview

Packaging; 10/10 Frags: The box has a convenient carry handle, and has a clean white and black color scheme. The contents are secure in the thick foam padding completely surrounding the PSU and separating the PSU from the cables.

Design; 9/10 Frags: This is a beautiful PSU. Its sleek black design really has a clean and sharp look. The finish is very clean looking when in your case. But getting it into your case without getting a million smudges on it is almost impossible. But they’re easy to wipe off with a cloth, or just wear gloves when installing the PSU.

Features; 8/10 Frags: The fact that this PSU is non-modular is a real downfall. Aside from not being modular, this PSU has every perk you could be looking for. 1250 watts of power is more than enough for even the most extreme enthusiast.

Ease of installation; 9/10 Frags: The included thumb screws are a nice addition to this A+ Product. But again the non modular cables really do damage when trying to get this PSU into your case. I wouldn't recommend putting this into a mid tower. But then again who would be putting a 1250Watt PSU into a mid tower.

Performance; 10/10 Frags: This PSU really does outperform; Cooler Master has truly hit a home run with this product. It is an absolutely stable PSU. I installed it and it instantly worked without a hitch.

Overall this product got a 9.2 out of 10 making it Clan Team Xtreme Approved.
