Plantronics Voyager 510
Bluetooth Headset

I must say this review is a little different simply because this is not about the next best piece of hardware for computers, but this covers something that the average person uses day to day. It is said via the 2006 survey reports that an estimated 7% ‐ 9% of the general public uses cell phones as their main line. I am a college student and use my phone as my primary phone line. So where am I going with this you may ask? For me a Bluetooth headset is a must have, simply because I use my cell‐phone all the time and I like to have my hands free.

The Plantronics Voyage 510 was the answer to my dreams, if I had dreams about headsets!
I have used a total of three Bluetooth headsets before I was able to get my hands on this one. I always experience the same thing; my voice would cut out or they could not hear my voice. The worst part about that was that my phone was only two feet away. I was so fed up with Bluetooth technology because I have spent a total of two hundred fifty dollars trying to find a good headset. Well look no more for you have found the correct headset and I will prove it!!!

First Thoughts

When I got this package, I was so excited because of the reputation Plantronics carries. The box as I expected was in perfect shape. Once I unpacked the contents and lingered over all of the parts, I excitedly started charging the headset.

Once it was fully charged I turned it on and linked it to my I‐phone, was I amazed at the quality of the Bluetooth with my first phone call! Remember what I mentioned before about how Bluetooth sucked for voice? It was the opposite. The clarity of the voice was amazing!

This headset rests on the whole ear itself so the weight is distributed evenly and it sits securely in the auditory canal. Even while working and doing moderate physical activity the earpiece stayed securely in my ear. This unit looks big and heavy but let me tell you it is stylish and very light. I often forget that I am wearing it. It is very easy to turn the unit on, simply press a button and it’s on. None of ‘hold this button for three seconds to turn on.’ It has a volume up and down control switch. It also has a button that will initiate phone calls based upon voice recordings. So the Voyager 510 has the features and looks very stylish.

Performance

I kept this test as unbiased as possible. As I talked to each of my family members on their phones, I never mentioned that I was on a Bluetooth headset. I finally mentioned to them that I was on a Bluetooth headset and each of them were amazed that Bluetooth technology has come so far. A friend recently purchased a different brand of Bluetooth headset and to me it was like night and day when they talked on that headset. It was always muffled and I could not make out certain words. But with this headset; truly, no one could tell when I was talking on it because it was that good.

After finding the quality of the headset to be remarkable, I began testing the distance of how far I could be from my phone and maintain a decent connection to the device. Whereas my other Bluetooth did like 2 or 3 feet, the voyager 510 series was able to do 15‐20 feet with in line of sight. Whenever I went further than that the signal or quality would drop noticeably. Also when I put a wall between my phone and I, it dropped noticeably again.
But overall I was very happy with the range for the Bluetooth headset.

In addition to working with all of this fabulous equipment they provide a USB Bluetooth so that it is compatible with any computer. My computer has a built in Bluetooth which allowed me very easy setup with the headset. To be honest I was impressed with the Bluetooth when I started playing music through it, for it is an increase of data. It worked fabulously.

Final Thoughts

I myself only have two small complaints about the product. First, you can’t really use this headset outside because of the wind. Even if it is a slight wind the mic picks it up. That’s not a huge issue simply because that tells me the mic is very sensitive. The other problem with the Voyager series headset is that I forget it is in my ear, so when I go to itch my ear, I itch the headset! I myself did not find any big problems, it is a great product, and my two concerns were just for a good laugh!

Why get a Bluetooth headset, when you can just put your phone to your ear? For one, having the phone up to your ear really restricts what you can do. When both hands are free, there is no going back. Secondly, for all of you big city drivers, the cities are starting to crack down on driving with your cell phone. For instance at O’Hare International Airport of Chicago, they provide areas for you to stop and use your cell phone. With a headset you don’t need to stop to talk, rather you can keep on driving. A lot of people use one hand to drive and one hand for the cell phone; this greatly diminishes reaction times and reaction abilities. The Plantronics Voyager 510 Bluetooth Headset is a more expensive Bluetooth headset on the market, but I would recommend this headset any day over those other three brands that I have tried. When you buy a Plantronics headset, you do not just buy a good product, you buy a promise of quality.
