I'm in the market for a new camera and would like the expert opinion here. My price range is max $300. I don't know very much about photography, but would like to learn. Thanks in advance!

Not sure if I should go for just a point and shoot, or up my budget a little bit and go with a Nikon D40X?

There is a huge difference in image quality between a P&S and a DSLR. If you use and appreciate the increased image quality which comes with owning a DSLR, get a D40 (forget about the D40X, just a D40 with more MP's).
If you enjoy versatility, like having movie and still modes, get a P&S. I'm not sure exactly what model, I haven't been keeping up with the P&S market. It's really a trade off between price, image quality, and versatility.
