OK, so I am getting ready for my project "Xtreme Crazyness"(i know i spelled craziness wrong)

I tried to order the case about a week ago but mountain mods was out of stock. Here is what the case will be:
Mountain Mods CYO ascension
Standard front and back
Big window on the MB side
Solid window on the other side
Solid top (might do small acrylic window ov MB with two fans over the other side)

This build will consist of 4, yes FOUR, loops. The loops will be as follows:
1) CPU only loop w/ Thermochill PA120.3
2) GPU only loop w/ Thermochill PA120.3
3) Chipset and areca SAS controller loop w/ Thermochill PA 120.1
4) DDR3 loop. I am going to use koolance DDR3 RAM blocks and a 120mm radiator but i need to find out if the blocks are aluminum before i decide on a radiator. I know not many people do it but I wish other companies made good solutions for WC'ing RAM.

Now for the good stuff, the hardware. This system will be used for slight gaming but mainly AutoCAD and Photoshop.

CPU Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition
MB Probably Foxconn X58 or ASUS P6T Deluxe
GPU 2X GTX 280 in SLI or CrossFire'd 4870 X2's
HDD 4X Fujitsu MAX3147RC (147GB 15,000 RPM SAS Drives) in RAID 0
4X Seagate 1TB Drives in RAID 5
RAM 12GB of DDR3, what ever will run CL5 at 1333 Mhz
PSU Xigmatek 1,200 Watt Modular Power Supply

These are the main components, obviously there are still little things to decide on like soundcard, optical drive, fans, and blocks but they will be decided later as the build progresses.

Wish me luck and I will try to update this thread as new products are acquired.

EDIT: I just ran some numbers for this think as far as price goes. I told myself I want going to add it up until the end but I had to. It got BIG really quick. However, that just made me want to get this thing finished even more. Just curious though. If dell or Alienware were to build a similar computer, what do you think it would cost?

IT IS FINISHED

Well, it has been a long journey but it is finally done. I never want to sleeve another cable ever again. There were a few changes made along the way but here are the specs of the final build

Mountain Mods Ascension with normal front, horizontal back, and diamond top
Main Components
ASUS Rampage II Extreme Motherboard
Intel Core i7-965 CPU
12GB G.Skill DDR3 (1600MHz 8-8-8-21)
Corsair HW1000 Watt PSU

Graphics
Two HIS 4870 X2's w/ EK nickel Waterblocks
Dual Samsung 30" monitors

Storage
Four Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB in RAID 5 for storage
Four 30GB OCZ V2 SSD's in RAID 0 for OS and everyday programs
3 MAX3147RC 147GB 15,000RMP SAS drives in RAID 0 for other programs and current projects
Adaptec 51245 RAID Controller

Watercooling Equipment
2 Thermochill PA 120.3 Radiators
2 Laing D5 Vario Pumps w/ absolute brackets
2 Mountain Mods three bay reservoirs
EK Supreme with 1366 mount and modded Swiftech backplate
All bitspower 1/2" X 3/4" compression fittings except on raditators
Feser UV green fluid (not mix but the fluid itself)

Each radiator has medium speeds Yates in push/pull controlled by a Sunbeam extreme fan controller.

I decided that on the new X58 motherboards that the chipset does not need cooling since the memory controller is in the CPU. I might add another radiator one day but for now they are just aircooled. All said and done I am really proud of what I have build. The only problem now is moving the damn thing as it weighs 100+ lbs. I am pretty certain it will rival several of the top computers on the site though.

I just want to say thanks to everyone on the thread. Without you guys I never would have had the knowledge to build this system.

Here are the picture. I am still waiting on the black tops for the 4870 X2 blocks which is why my old 8800 is in there and there is no tubing on the GPU loop. I thought about just mounting them with the clear tops but dont want to have to drain the loop. Also, the CPU loop has just distilled in it but the Feser fluid is arriving with the tops. The RAID controller had to be RMA'd as one of the multilane connectors wasn't working but it's replacement should be here soon. Right now I have a box with no storage at all. I think I might just hook up an old 500GB drive so I can use it till the RAID card gets back.

What do you think about my drives mounted where the other PSU could go. I hurt a little to drill holes in my case but o'well. Those are three of the 1.5TB drives.

Would you be buying an Areca 1680i SAS controller ? Will you be using a MCW60 or FuZion GFX water block ?

Very interesting machine. And congratulations !

Yo can use the MIPS Ram Freezer, and all its water channels are copper.

As this is Project Xtreme Crazyness that is exactly what I am going for, thanks for the compliment even if you didn't realize it :D

IanY, this is the controller that I currently have and will be using in my new build Areca SAS Controller (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816151040)

It will be very interesting to see what, if any, gains can be had from watercooling the RAM.

Just think guys, it could be worse. I could get the BDS (Big Daddy Special Ascension) and use 4 ThermoChill PA120.3's

Just curious, is there any software to monitor RAM temps or will i need to use an infrared thermometer?

I like the 1680IX very much. Great choice. The question is which water block you would prefer to use on the controller. I personally recommend the newly released MCW60 Version 2. Also, are you going to water cool just the main core or both chipsets on the SAS controller ? (very extreme indeed)

Hah.. DarthBeavis himself has the MIPS Ram Freezer, and so does Coolmeister. Both have fabled and epic Skulltrail builds.

If I were to build one, I would get the Kingston ram (perhaps Dr. Who can help with the special Who? version for you?... its *very* special.. I think CAS3 at close to 1000 Mhz). I would definitely get the MIPS.

Its sold by Linus at ncixus.com. Be prepared to part with $120, excluding shipping from Vancouver.

Oh, SkullTrail, I see. I thought the FB-DIMMS on ST got REALLY hot. Would watercooling the RAM be at least worth a try if a good block existed?

You seem to not be a fan of WC'ing the memory. I realize it will probably do nothing, I am just curious and figured "why not".

Being a 5th year mechanical engineering major I am fairly good with AutoCAD and have access to a CNC. I think I am going to make a block that will fit will with my system.

You'll need to run two Ram Freezers. Each Ram Freezer is designed to accomodate only four sticks. It'll be easy to use two Ram Freezers with three sticks each.

I just e-mail MIPS to see if they will be releasing a solution for triple channel memory.

UPDATE: Ok, so I ordered the case. I ordered a Ascension with thermochill spacing front and blackice spacing rear. I spoke with MIPS and they said that they will look at the market for 6 DIMM RAM freezers but said ther would cut me a deal if I bought two. I am then going to use a CNC machine and make a new top that will fit 6 DIMMS instead of 4. However I might just run two RAM freezers.

Also, Now that i know i do not need a separate loop for the RAM it has dropped down to a three loop system. The chipset and RAM will be cooled with a BlackIce 360 and the GPU and CPU will both have their own PA120.3's with Yates Loons in a push/pull configuration.

crazy1323
09-07-2008, 12:18 PM
Will one channel on this controller (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=137&products_id=23039) be able to handle six of these fans (http://www.petrastechshop.com/12yalod1cafa1.html)?

Also, What can be gained from a push/ pull configuration?

Thinks are slowly starting to come together with this build. It is also looking like Core i7 will be ALOT faster than people thought. Tom's hardware got an early engineering sample to 3.6 Ghz with only 1.2V. It looks like with good cooling ~4.5Ghz for 24/7 might be possible. Also, with nehalems hyperthreading that would be like having eight cores.

majestik
09-07-2008, 12:31 PM
6*0.3*12 = 21.6W (6 fans, 0.3A each, at 12V)
21.6 < 30 so yes it will handle it.

crazy1323
09-09-2008, 12:59 PM
How many watts can I push through on MOLEX connector? I will use four channels on the fan controller with the following loads: 21.6, 21.6, 21.6, and 24 watts. will this be too much load for one controller? Also, the fans will only be running 100% during benching.

Here is the power supply I have.

UPDATE:

OK, thanks to some very kind people over at the Engineering School I have acquired a few things to help me with this build. I am making a custom RAM cooler out of all copper based on the MIPS RAM Freezer 4 but a little bit of my own design also.

I got copies of the following programs on friday from school:
AutoDesk Inventor Pro 2009
AutoDesk AutoCAD 2009
Maxwell Render 1.7.1

I will only produce two of these blocks but I will send the .dmg file to anyone who wants it. The only stipulation is that the design can never be created for profit or mass marketed.

I am still waiting on the case to be shipped before anything can really get started. I spoke with MM the other day and they said that it should be shipping sometime in late Sept. and should get to me by early Oct.

Also, I have decided I am going to run 3 Arrays
#1: 4 Fujitsu MAX3147RC 15,000RPM SAS drives in RAID 0 (already have with an Areca 1212 controller.
#2: 4 Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB drives in RAID 0+1 (waiting for Newegg to get them back in stock)
#3: 2 MTRON 32GB 7000 Pro's in RAID 0 (already ordered and waiting to ship)

Also, I am trying to decide between going with 2 ATI 4870 X2's or 2 nVidia GTX 280's. Anyone have any suggestions? Also, These will be running 3 1600 X 1050 monitors if that helps.

I received a package from Gary at Sidewinder Computers today. Nothing too big. I got 10 120mm black wire fan guards, 4 80mm black wire fan guards, and 3 PA 120.3 gaskets.

Also, I got a package from Performance-PCs with 4 high speed 80mm fans, 10 120mm mesh filters, 4 80mm mesh filters, a black Rheobus Extreme, and 4 black wire sleeving kits.

I talked to Mountain Mods and they said my case and three PA120.3's will be shipping on Friday.

Also, I am waiting on Petras to get more D12SH-12's in. I will need 19 of them and PTS said they would have them mid-October.

Looks like everything is falling into place to have this thing all done by late Oct. to early Nov.

Also, I am considering going to two 30" monitors. Samsung has some that are not priced too bad and seem to get good reviews. Samsung 30" Monitor (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001098)

Gaming at 2560x1600 makes it all worth while. Good choice and one hell of a build you have planned there.

good luck and have a blast,

andyc

Will 2 4870 X2's drive two monitors at 2560 X 1600 at a reasonable FPS in most games? More and more games are coming out that support multiple monitors and I am liking it. I assume it would be better to not use Crossfire and simply plug one monitor into each card.

Once the case gets here next week thing will really pick up fast.

OK, i do not have a digital camera here at school to takes pics with. I guess I can take a few on my cellphone. Where is a good place to host pics for free?

Here is a status update.
Everything is purchased and arriving daily. Here is how every sits now:
2 PA120.3's with 6 Yates Loons Mediums in push/pull each
1 Blackice 360 with same fan setup.
Rampage II Extreme (waiting on Eddy to release blocks)
Intel Core i7 965 EE (stock cooling until I get a waterblock for LGA 1366)
12GB G.Skill DDR3 1600MHz 8-8-8-21 (arriving today)
Corsair 1000 Watt PSU (arriving today)
2 HIS 4870 X2's with Full Cover Blocks (cards here but need blocks)
3 Vario D5 Pumps

Hopefully it should be running tonight. I order the Psychopack for sleeving everything from Charles at Murder Mod and I am waiting on that. Also, I have ZERO blocks for this setup right now so everything is stock cooling (boring). Look for this to be 100% completed by the end of the year. It is going to be a beat when everything is all done.

Nice work!

I left my GPU loop unused for a while in my Ascension as well, you'll be happy you got it up and running rather than waiting for each and every piece to be perfect. Thats what "maintenance" is for. :D

You must admit, Ben at Mountain Mods does not make computer cases. He makes the clay from which true art is formed.

I dunno.... they are pretty much as perfect as it gets for watercooling, no doubt, but they are still just big square boxes with loads of holes in. :S

I loved my Horizon when I first got it, but in the end it all just felt a bit shallow... I cant really put my finger on it. It's almost like they made it all a little too easy, took all the fun out of getting a case and having to spend a good while figuring out where everything gonna go and how your gonna mount it.

Is it just me, or is a serious lack of pics in this thread?

Sorry about that one. I am a mechanical engineering and accounting double major with a minor in math so time is tight. I promise I will take some good pics soon.
