When the Large Hadron Collider comes into operation in September 2008, it will begin to produce an expected 15 million gigabytes of data every year, enough information to create a 21-kilometre-high stack of CDs annually.

On 3rd October we announce the readiness of the LHC Computing Grid (LCG), an e-infrastructure conceived and designed to support this data challenge, and with it the research of more than 9000 physicists around the globe.

"The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid is generating the technology for tomorrow's science needs. We are witnessing a unique collaboration on an international scale, with vast potential for accelerating discoveries in physics and other fields of science." Ian Bird, WLCG project leader.

Very interesting project. Hopefully they will find something out about the microscopic properties of dark matter....among many other things.

They're going to create little black holes (http://www.lhcfacts.org/) that are going to eat the earth and we're all going to die!!!! ;) :eek: (kidding, I've already been flamed once for this).

What I don't understand is that they claim the LHC will be able to recreate the Higgs boson, but it has a maximum energy is 14Tev (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider#Technical_design) and Higgs could be up to 60Tev in mass. The SSC that was going to built in Texas would have been 30Tev for each beam. Idiot congress. I hope they luck out and find it though.

Well...the results of re-creating such extreme conditions that never happened before, since moments after the big bang, can not be fully predicted. Unknown sets of rules will come into play inside that beast. With that said, if something wrong happens, lets just hope our annihilation will be painless :D j/k

Ya. When they get close to the energy of the Higgs boson, the might not directly observe it, but indirectly observe some properties of it. Or at least identify some lack of symmetry... like most of todays known particles have been postulated, then observed... through lack of observable symmetry.

I'm thinking of sending the guys at the LHC project a crowbar, if they break thru to another dimension it might come in handy to beat the brain-eating buggers to death.. Worked wonders for Mr. Freeman..

what would really be nice, is if they can get the code to work with the gpu's :) but hell, they are having enough problems keeping up with the demand as it is.... im not sure ive gotten a wu in the last week from them.
