Hi, just wondering if anyone has advice for the minimum specs required to run 1080p content on a notebook computer (with smooth playback).

I'm currently tempted by a Sony Vaio TZ series laptop which I believe contains a Centrino Core 2 Duo 1.33GHz CPU. Will this be able to handle it or is this processor too slow?

Thanks in advance : )

I think you should be fine if you get CoreAVC, my pentium M 2GHz single core handles it @ 95% cpu usage.

Or look for a notebook with a Radeon HD 3200 or similar--fully accelerated for both popular codecs.

I would have thourght that the screen res is the most important thing to consider if you want to play 1080 on a notebook.

I presumed he wanted to use an external display.

It also depends on whether you want to do AACS decryption as well i.e. if you want to play Blu Ray or HD DVD discs without somehow removing the AACS encryption first. AACS decryption takes ut quite a bit of CPU, so if you don't have GPU acceleration of HD video on the side you won't be able to play back properly with a 1,33GHz (if at all). That is my experience, at least.

Good point, I agree it would be good to have GPU acceleration

1080p requires proper video acceleration.cpu acceleration with a 1.3ghz core2duo IS NOT going to work. i guarentee it.

anything less than an 8600M GT is going to be sketchy. an ATI 2400 might, but i am skeptical
Intel GMA Video chipsets will NOT do 1080p either. no way, not gunna happen. 720p max is all they can handle.

you wont do 1080p on a laptop with that slow of cpu and video card. you need something alot faster.

yeahh, i don't think Centrino C2D 1.33GHz can play 1080p smoothly..

I know it's been a while since I first posted. I saw the laptop posted on ebay and needed a quick reply at the time... still thanks for the info peeps : ) All I had wondered was whether if that processor and chipset would handle 1080p playback on an external display... it's not the primary criteria I would want from a laptop, but just an extra bonus if it did :P

What is interesting though is that a newer model, VAIO TT series now sports the Core 2 ULV CPUs up to 1.5GHz, still based on an Intel chipset but now comes with a Blu-Ray drive and HDMI out. I'm guessing that chipset is really beefed up...
