Ok i ahve an external USB and it worked all fine under XP and under Vista PRIOR to SP1.

The thing is how to fix M-Softs crap this time?

Looks like they took away support for certain USB external drives and thumb drives and a few other thinsg with SP1.

Anyone have this issue and FIXED it without uninstalling SP1?

I bought a USB hub today hoping it would fix it, but it did not.

The USB hub is powered through the USB, but has a DC 5V plug infor an adapter (SOLD SEPARATELY) in whcih i don't have the power plug in .. does this matter. ???

I don't think they took away support for USB devices, but I did notice that some USB thumb drives act weird under vista in general. I think there are some settings for removable devices that can be configured somewhere.

I need to do it to. What I DID notice, is that USB devices behave MUCH differently when I plug them into the native motherboard USB ports, than when I plug them into either a hub or a front panel extender. I have the biggest problems when I plug them into the front panel USB extender (ya know, the kind with the memory card reader in it).

Sometimes, the whole thing s@#ts the bed completely. I think its related to obsolete drivers from the USB controller chip vendors that are embedded inside the front panel thingie.

But I never seem to have those problems when I use the motherboard USB ports

Ok let me state it clearer i used the USB ports on the back of mobo and on top of my case Antec 900 case ... same issue after SP1.

It is SP1 update that has Fudged it up for many ppl with certain USB devices.... even Maxtor Extermal Units and Certain WD external units.

I bought the USB to try it as i thought it had a internal driver supported for Vista and that would over ride the USB External drives...... but it does not...... i also bought it as it has a 4 memory card reader slots on it... great for my camera now no benidng downa dn plugging USB in for camera no more.... so not a loss after all.

But MS has purposily certain taken USB support for certain devices..

I want to know if anyone has fixed this yet or found away around it ... other then uninstalling SP1.

Huh ? I'm using two Kingston Data Travelers II + MIGO, since Vista beta without even a single issue or tiniest problem.
The thing is , I disabled all that balast that Vista had running in backround, Caching on USB drives while not used, ReadBoost, Autodefrag and so on
and Haven't had issues since then. Tried it in the back of the MOBO , front slots of Stacker, Top slots of Stacker , Logitech G11 USB Hub , no issues.
Runned a couple of benches , left them idle for a couple of hours, nothing.

Try to turn off that balast in Admin Services. And then reinstall your Intel Chipset Pack , the newest one is 9.0.0.011, and try it again :p:

PPL read about it before stating things . it an issue with SP1 and certain drives or USB thumb drive units.. i ain't a NEWBIE, but this is a SP1 related issue .... partmgr.sys SP1 it not work ...... not SP1 it work...... so u tell em...

Also i tried my LG IDE dvd-rw drive in the enclouse and it works fine, but my 300 GB IDE drive BSOD error partmgr.sys .. yada-yada-yada....... now it works fine IN XP np's i have a dell XP machine with SP3 here ... and my 300GB works fine before SP1 in Vista.

I also have a Kingston Data Travaler brand new and it works fine under Vista SP1.
