In pnp/pci configuration config, also check "pci-e complaincy" mode under advenced chipset config.

I boot fine with one card under P05 bios, maybe there is bios issue with 2 cards...

Hmm does one card work for u?

I think bios is the issue...there were similar problems with this chipset(x38/x48) with 3870x2 which new bios rectified. And it seems this issue is not confined to BlackOPS either. Many boards are not able to complete boot with 2 cards installed.

Iīve got the exact same problem. One 4870x2 works fine and if I plug in the second one BlackOPS ends with this message. Postcode 8b.

3rd post down says 8b is power-related.. those x2's draw a lot of power

I checked power consumption with a power meter. With BlackOPS, E8600 @ 500x6 1.25 volt vcore and one card I had a consumption of about 370-380 watts while booting. A second card shouldnīt be a problem for our OCZ EliteXStream 1kw. But surprisingly power consumption remained nearly the same after installing card no. 2.

Uh, i hope it's not pci-e power that's the problem...

That was my first impression while dealing with this problem.

After several attempts I changed motherboard (ASUS Maximus Extreme), cpu (qx9650) and psu (I tried Silverstone OP1000 and Xilence 1200). With ASUS Maximus Extreme I didnīt get a screen when both cards were installed.

Funny thing is that the system itself was up and running. Because after some seconds I could shut down the pc with pressing windows key -> arrow up -> enter -> arrow down -> enter on my keyboard. That means that my system was in windows vista and reacted the right way - but without a picture on my screen.

Based on MusicIsMyLife's last comment, this sounds very much like a bios issue... its getting confused somehow and not initialising the display.

OK. received 2 new 4870x2's today and after several hours of testing, I found the exact same issue as spl above. I didn't try any other bios than G28 but I believe this could be a BlackOps bios problem because the same 2 cards run in crossfirex on my P5E3 Prem mobo using bios 0505 . I used the drivers on the install disc that came with the cards. 8.8 beta did not work and the official 8.7 from guru3D did not work on my asus board. I tried all of these on BlackOps to no avail. Every attempt was stopped cold during post with the "AHCI Bios not installed!!" I disconnected all extra stuff on the board to make sure there was no power issues. 3DMark benching requires about 980 watts with 2 4870x2 and qx9650.
(2x1 gb, Vista 32bit).

Saaya,
Please bring this issue to the bios engineers.
Thanks!

So will a fix for this definitely require a new bios?

Just that i'm still finding settings on G28 - will G29 be the same except for the 4870X2 fix?

Ouch!

What clocks and vcore?

Running 4.275GHz @1.5 vcore on P5E3 Prem. (450x9.5 qx9650) I checked again and my UPS shows up to 955 watts when running 3DM06 on the next to last graphics test. Vantage averaged higher with extended periods of 935+. The card fans spin up real fast to let you know when you hit peak loads. This is an open test stand with a 3 fan rad. and 3 other fans plus a physx card. It was not easy to get cfx to run on this board. There is no display until after post is complete and you get to the windows sign in screen so bios are not available with this 2 card set-up. I hope to get my BlackOps running in cfx with the G29 bios that LardArse posted. I use a TT 1.2 kw psu for these boards and obviously it is needed. By the way, two of these cards run wicked with the games I've tried including Crysis.:D

I will post results of G29 on BlackOps later tonight.

..That seems like a bit over the top..Ive seen round 700 watts not overclocked- and qx9650 clocked to 4.0 round 900

I think enermax galaxy 1000W's would be enough.

I can confirm spl's findings. CrossfireX does not function with G29 bios on BlackOps. The board will not boot with the CF bridge attached or not. :(

Running 4.275GHz @1.5 vcore on P5E3 Prem. (450x9.5 qx9650)

Thanks for your info.

That means that 1kw wonīt be enough for qx9650 @ 5.6 ghz @ 1.8 volt and 2x 4870x2.

We need a new psu.... :D

It works on my p5e3 prem but not the way it should. Like I said it was difficult to get it started with several hard re-boots and using the keyboard with no display. There is NO display until the Vista password log-on screen so the bios are NOT accessable. I could not find a way to get into the bios with both cards attached but the system ran smoothly when in Windows.

That is your decision. I just reported what I saw on the watt meter on my UPS when running the benches on my Asus board. I will report power demand on BlackOps and cfx when I get it running.

I read that other motherboards required a bios update to get these cards to run, specifically some DFI ones.

Good to know it's not an exclusive blackops problem, i guess.

So how about that bios guys :)
