i'll be there for Team Singapore. Let me go pull up a picture :D

T_M from Team Au will be my teammate again.

He was my teammate at 2007 aocc for team aussie so we're back! just tt flying my flag now instead :)

the only problem i have with the hardware is 2 4850s...

i'm like.. WHAT!?

The use of the xfire 4850's is gonna make things very interesting.

The 4850's scale much better if you have the right tools than the 4870's, so the man with the soldering skills will be set. The only problem.. Rivatuner doesn't adjust the clock frequencies so you guys will be stuck with the CCC limitations unless GamerHUD can adjust both cards.

Hard to do a BIOS mod if you don't have an app to flash the BIOS :D

Me, Hazzan and Andre X_X will attend this competition. Looking forward to meet with you all.

And the interesting parts is we will use non reference HD4850 card ;), it will GiGABYTE own design HD4850 available at the end of this month. GamerHUD support offcourse:D and i don't think we need to re-flash the VGA BIOS.

@Nightraven & T_M : just like old time mate.......

OK, i have got some confirmed info that the event will officially be on the 25th (Thursday) September.
Contestants will be flying in on the 24th, and then most will stay on until the 27th (Saturday) after some organised sight seeing and much partying ;)

So far the venue for both accommodation and the event are the hyatt, but the event may move to the new computer market which is still being decided.

I'll be arriving around 9:30pm on 24th, so will catch up with everyone at the bar soon after that.

Update, here is the 4850 mounting distance which will be used for the final taipei, make sure your VGA kits fit it.

http://pic.xfastest.com/hicookie/532.jpg
thanks for that...will help with block design....do you know if this is the same mounting spaces as the 4870X2?

also if you know...is the core below the level of the shim? or can we make the contact face of the block 50mm square or so and still get contact?

4870x2 is much smaller,62mm of crossing,50mm square is too big
you also need to escape PCIe power & Bridge chip:)

T_M i pulled the cooler of my 4870 to find out that the core is higher than the shim so no need to machine an extra small face into the block.

now we just need someone to figure out this bridge chip scenario if the block need to fit X2's as well

edit:...anyone got a naked X2 handy who could tell us which components around the core are taller than the actual core?..and how far from the centre of the core they are :D

No you must use the supplied cards.
Everyone has the same time contraints - so all fair.
Modding within the time limit is actually pretty easy if you pre-prepare your mod components well. Soldering onto board takes only a few minutes.

Agreed, I can mod an HD4850 in about 3 minutes if I have the wires pre-cut and the resistor connected to the wires already. Hell, I can have the card going at 1.55v in 3.5 minutes ;)

I have poured LN2 directly into the water-block built into the board for a decent effect. Would highly recommend not doing this though as the heatpipe is really good at removing heat from everything else and quickly causing the entire assembly to go sub-ambient.

When it comes to extreme subzero overclocking, don't be afraid to ask questions. Everyone here has had his/her first ln² session and most of them do remember how dangerous it felt :).

T_M
08-21-2008, 09:33 PM
Do not pour LN2 into the waterblock unless you have completely insulated all areas around teh entire heasink/pipe assembly.
After a short period of time the entire assembly will coat in condensation and eventually you may have water on the board/components.
For this competition, the standard heatsinks will be more than enough since quad core FSB's do not stress the NB enough to require cooling more.

So we need two LN2 pot for one 4870x2 card ?yes (unless one pot can contact both X2 cores)...but the X2 is not part of the competition...i just want to make sure my new blocks work with the X2's as well as the 4850's.

i will have an X2 this weekend to check out all the surface components to be avoided by the blocks.

also i should be able to post a workable design up for everyone to be able to make

you are right in P45 OC contest, but what are you planed for Freestyle contest ? can we use our P45 OC contest in freestyle ? I need corsair Dominator memory from the first contest.

i just want to make sure my new blocks work with the X2's as well as the 4850's.

as I understand, they are different and I should build different pots for them. is it true ?

s e t h
08-22-2008, 01:30 AM
if i recall all the kit from the p45 oc contest will be available for the freestyle event as well...also you may contact GB if there is anything special you need for the freestyle event.

the blocks i'm designing now will work for most cards...recent nvidia ones, ati ones, crossfire if you have two of them...and will also fit the X2 (possibly a separate holddown will be needed for the X2).
they will not fit with SLI if the slots have only one empty slot between the cards...they are too big to fit tri-sli
i will post full design pictures in a short while...hopefully some constructive comments from the top guns here can be put to good use

s e t h
08-22-2008, 02:09 AM
ok here is the design...any and all comments welcome...please bare in mind this is not yet final as we'll only be checking the naked X2 this weekend.
i'm not wild about the mounting design but it should work and we couldn't think of something better while still getting as much mass in.
surface area is over 150cm2 and for a modern gpu block it will be heavy.
the holddown for the X2 is not ready and may not be needed at all...it depends what might be in the way on the X2 pcb.

ARH
08-22-2008, 11:15 AM
why you don't want to use default Base hold down ? in this picture (http://www.ixbt.com/video3/images/rv770/hd4850-scan-back.jpg) shows that it seems enough strong ( picture dedicated to 4850)

that holdown on the drawing sits between the block and the card....there is no backplate
the idea is to not have to remachine the block every time someone changes mounting hole spacings

it has been dry ice tested on an 8800ultra but i think this block will have to be narrowed to miss the capacitor on the standard 4850:
can anyone get the dimension indicated in the pic (horizontal distance between the centre of the mount bolt and the edge of the capacitor indicated)...scuze the quality :P

It's not like you'll have to pay for the flight and hotel yourself. $5K USD isn't exactly bad when you can do whatever you want with it. Not that everyone will receive that kind of money, but the worst thing that can happen is that you get a nice, paid experience. :)

congrats to Deanzo on last night's win

me and Dean had to go to extra round and he took it out.........

first round was great with me and Dean trading shots after i changed to a new board as my first one died separating us by 0.400s at final time............2m00.3s vs 1m59.9s

second round deanzo had to back off more than me on 4 cores and i took 3DMARK06 with about 22140 point score with a GTX280 on air.................deanzo did 212xx i think in the end

extra time was supposed to be 3DMARK01 but the file we had was corrupt so we went to 4M SuperPi instead....my machine could not boot to windows.........just couldn't get it going.......when i did it was at some supermediocre clocks.....board had enough for the night i think hehehe .....it was an up and down night for both of us  hheheheh.............shame we couldn't battle it out in the end but it really didn't matter....we had a lot of fun and finally put a name to a face....great event by Gigabyte once again

I was thinking about the power-line wich is 125 volt in taipei,
All my tools ( solder iron, hot glue gun, hot air gun) work @ 220 volt , i think is the same for most of people.

why not just give us limitation to what GPU is minimal? for example, must be minimal a 256bit/256mb gpu's, any lower specs is not allowed. that would be easier for us to decide which card to use

S e t h & I have decided that the time has come to upgrade our GPU block. Last competition we swopped one of our old revision blocks for a temp probe (thanks JMax & Damian), knowing that we would have to re-design for GOOC.

We have used our usual approach to surface area & mass. The block is machined from solid copper base with an aluminium tube over. Total surface area is around 200cm2, and the mass I will need to confirm a little later. The block will fit tri sli setup as well as 4870X2's.

Please consider it open source & available for all. Any comments would be welcome :)

Since the interface is on one side of the block, i dont see much point in the second row of 'surface area' holes

s e t h
09-02-2008, 02:18 AM
leaving out the second row would reduce the surface area and increase the mass...while the mass would be welcome the speed of the pulldown and loadholding ability would be reduced.
but yes 100cm2 of surface area would likely be enough and one can really never have too much mass.
we just went with 200 as we know it will be enough for DI and LN2 and considering the holes are so deep we'd rather be safe than sorry :)
an aluminium ES version has been built and tested perfect on DI.

if i had to decide which set of holes to leave out i'd remove the ones closer to the face as i find cold mass close to the core more important when using ln2.
the cold spreads through the copper very quickly and a more than half the time the block has eaten the ln2 and is running dry with just the mass soaking the heatload.
