View Full Version : Picking fans

I'm in the early stages of a dual loop water cooling build. Just for background I'm going to run:

Thermochill PA120.2 for the CPU
Feser 480ER for GPUs and Northbridge

I haven't decided on pumps yet, but it's between Laing DDC3.2s and D5s with aftermarket tops. CPU block will be a D-Tek Fuzion V2 (unless something better comes out) and unknown on the GPU blocks as there are none for the 4870X2 as of yet. Same with the northbridge as this is a Nehalem build.

Anyway, I'm wondering about picking fans. The first choice would be the Sanyo Denki 109R1212H1011. It pumps out a hell of a lot of air and isn't too noisy. Even so, I'll probably under volt it a bit. Which in itself could be a problem as running a substantial amount of these powerful fans on the 5V rail could tax it. Might have to look into fan controllers.

Anyway, back to the point. If I'm unable to get the Sanyo Denki fans I'm looking for other suitable, ball bearing alternatives. One that popped up was the ebm-Papst 4212 M (http://www.ebmpapst.com/index/sid/AC1F3DA2-5888-4A4D-883B-34743396BFDD/nid/2C2CF297-CDB4-4A99-9C22-553CFAB054D4/produkte_detail.asp?pid=54147&overview_action=%2E%2E%2F2C2CF297%2DCDB4%2D4A99%2D 9C22%2D553CFAB054D4%2Fprodukte%5Fliste%2Easp%3Fbac k%3Dtrue%26amp%3Bparent%5Fid%3D). It's a similar fan although with lower output and nominally lower dbA. Papst doesn't list their static pressure either. If anyone has some other good suggestions for a 120x38mm ball bearing fan that works well with radiators, I'd love to hear them.

Looks for a user called Vapor.
he has some of the bests fan tests in the world made here on XS ;)

use search function to find his profile.

One of these IMO

1. Yate Loon D12SM-12 Fan (70.5 CFM, 33 dBA) (http://www.petrastechshop.com/12yalod1cafa1.html). I have these on my Swiftech MCR320 & love them. They work great & are quite.

2.Scythe S-Flex Fan - SFF21F (63.7 CFM, 28 dBA) (http://www.jab-tech.com/Scythe-S-Flex-Fan-SFF21F-pr-3257.html)

Also here is the Fan Review --> Fans, Fans, Fans -- XS Fan Review (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=171661) <--

Hope this helps.

Yate Loon 88cfm and undervolt. Mine easily start 900 rpm, which is like 39cfm (maybe actually like 15 or so)
It's not audible

I really want 38mm fans because of their higher static pressure. I may be completely off base here, but I'm guessing a fan with a higher static pressure would work much better for forcing air through a thick radiator like the 120.2 or 480ER.

As for going with the 120.2 over the MCR320...I already have a PA120.2 and I know it'll fit into the bottom of the case I want to use (a Lian Li PC-V2110) with a power supply installed.

ok, but you should really look into the deltas i linked you to in my first post, theyre really quite (not audible above my other fans)

I would...but there is no link :) I was looking at Delta fans...they're ball bearing right? What voltage are you running yours at? 7?

You're correct that the thicker fans generate more static pressure, but they also generate a greater amount of noise for the same rpm. Which increases faster, it's hard to say. But with a decent controller you can undervolt low-speed Delta and Panaflo fans to the point of inaudibility. As 38mm fans go, I find the bearings in the Panaflo's to be better, but both are definitely better than the Ultra Kaze's, even if they cost a little extra.

I use the Zalman ZM-F3's (http://www.microbarn.com/details.aspx?rid=101763&source=froogle) and undervolt them with a Scythe Fan Controller. Around 800-1000 RPM's they're inaudible. Vapor's review is the sh*t, check out the medium speed fans HERE. (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2668920&postcount=3)

San Aces H1011. I used YL medium speed, replacing them by the San Aces was like water to wine.
Powerfull, can go from noiseless to airplane sound just by turning my rheobus up.
The air moving through the rad is greater now, the temperatures on my Q6600 are now 6ºC lower.

srry, i forgot,

right now they are at 12V the only thing you can hear is the air going trough the rad but just barely above my other case fans

Wow, those don't look bad at all. When I think Delta, I think 150CFM screamers. Those actually look like a pretty damn good fans for my application. About half the cost of the Sanyo Denki doesn't hurt either.
