View Full Version : Required Power Supply for new system?

I am in the middle of building a new system (looking to build a monster/killer system). I've pretty much decided what components I want to get, the only problem is I have no clue which Power Supply is needed/recommend. I am not looking to be cheap (money isn't a huge issue) but still wish to stay resonable.

My new system profile is the following:
[Profile]
CPU: INTEL Core 2 Quad Q9450
MOTHERBOARD: Asus X48 DDR3 (still debating on which one)
VIDEO: ASUS/SAPHIRE 4870 (Arctic AccelS1 rev2 with dual fans)
RAM: 2x2G OCZ DDR3 PC-12800 1600 MHZ (Platinum or Reaper HPC)
HDD: 4x Western Digital SATA2 500GB
2x Western Digital PATA 320GB
Case: Full ATX Tower with 5x 120mm & 1x 200mm fans

Question is...
a) how powerfull of a Power Supply do I need? 650W? 700W? etc...
b) what are the prefered manufactuers & models?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Kondik

My rig eats 170W idle 340 load, your VGA can't step down as much as the GTX series so your minimum will go up , then i have 3 10.000 RPM drives so add a couple of more watts , the max load i presume would be maybe 400W so even one Corsair 620HX could handle it, but I presume you would like Cross Fire sometimes so something around 750 - 800W , but if you don't care take the Corsair 1000HX.

I preffer Seasonics, Corsair and Tagan as PSU brands, last 3 years i had 8 PSU's from these brands not single one was RMAed

Need at least a 750w psu to make sure you don't have to upgrade again if you decide to add another 4870 down the road.

I'd say get the corsair 750TX...

Great unit for the money($92.90 AMIR + Free S/H (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10007112) @ ZZF)

Though PCP&C makes a great 750w unit as well.

S75QB silencer 750w for $115 AMIR + S/H @ZZF (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10005611)

For your proposed build a quality 750w unit is plenty and offers enough room to go CF at a later date...

Also if you haven't already bought your HDDs why not grab 3x WD 640GB? They'll be cheaper and offer better performance(loving the 2 platter design) while only losing out on a few paltry GB(80).

I used to reccomend the tx750 until I blew out a perfectly functioning one by adding in a second 4870 it had smoke and everything LOL. System in my sig is what killed the tx750

...

Your sig rig probably draws a lot more power than the OP's theoretical build... Still, better safe than sorry, perhaps if CF as a future option is a must then a good 1K watt unit is actually warranted?

My condolences on the lost psu, but did you happen to record the smoke and everthing? That'd be interesting to watch. :P

a corsair hx1000 would be the best... if you can afford it.
anyway, the PCP&C 750 is a great unit

I know its minimal but going with a higher wattage PSU nets you better efficiency overall even if your not hitting anywhere near the max load of the psu
